Britannia chases Galatea up Shap 30/5/15

Here is my footage of a very rare event in the mainline steam world where we see two steam tours without diesel involvement attacking the climb up Shap simultaneously on Saturday 30th May 2015. We first see Jubilee Class 45699 'Galatea' attacking the climb pulling 'The Cumbrian Coast Express' and then in the same frame we see Britannia Class 70000 'Britannia' closely following and awaiting the signals to clear for her attack on the summit.

Hmmmm a quote from an old Midland driver (my late Grandfather) if you see black smoke from the chimney of a steam locomotive then the Fireman wasn't doing his job properly. So I'd say the Fireman on Britannia was doing a far better job. Yes the Jubilee was probably on her limit having a rake of ten so I'll give the crew the benefit of the doubt, but in saying that my Grandfather probably wouldn't.

@@carldavies7418 all it means is the door is open and he's stoking. Doesn't mean he's not doing a good job. Stoking up before the climb and hoping for the best would not have been a good call here. Stoke up before and then probably need to keep going some of the way up.

I've watched this video about a dozen times over the past few weeks and it must rank as one the best over Shap, and is also so unique. When the driver gives Britannia her head she just storms away with her train and the noticeable change in exhaust blast is a truly moving experience in every sense of the word. Without any doubt this video must rank as one of the most unique in modern day steam workings. The camera positioning was spot on, the long video shots were perfect and the sounds of two steam loco's slogging up Shap was superb. Hearing the exhaust beat of two loco's simultaneously was the highlight for me, as I love those long approaching and receding sounds. Well done too for running the video after Britannia had long passed, and all credit to the drivers and firemen, they really knew how to handle those engines to perfection. Thank you.

Rare footage indeed in this day of ours where mainline steam is oft regarded as something of a novelty for old guys with nostalgia. Not on your life - this is a superb video which captures all the elements of preserved steam today.. A joy to watch and appreciate the skill of today's crews.All admiration to the Crew of Britannia for maintaining a steady beat up Shap (probably against double yellows all the way) ensuring avoidance of a wheel slip or red light and the likelyhood of a standing start. A superb piece of video - probably the longest I've seen without a single move of the camera or lens! A great position, a clear day, no wind to drag the sound away and not a moment without interest. You can still hear Galatea as Britannia approaches! That's got to be something hardly ever seen before. 11 coaches unassisted was asking a lot of a Jubilee, but it was doing a sterling job slogging up there. So was Britannia from a standing start.

I think without doubt this is the best video on KZbin of this particularly epic event..... You've captured the spectacle so well with the awesome audio, getting both loco's in the same shot, and the whole feel of the drag and effort of the climb... The fact that Galatea was even making headway up shap WITH LOAD 11 without a banker is credit to the crew on her footplate that day. Asking Jubilee to tackle shap with load 11 with a banker would be hard. Without one it's amazing she was still storming up it.

I wonder if a double-chimneyed "Jubilee" would have made less smoke? To see two mainline steam hauled trains like this gives a clear indication of how exciting a place Shap must have been before the 1960s. All that and freight as well, it must have been had work for the crews.

Shouldn't make much difference as the black stuff doesn't come through the exhaust nozzles. possibly the slightly softer exhaust of the double chimney may have tended toward it being dirtier as the fiercer the exhaust generally the brighter the fire will burn. Probably why the spam cans are notorious for having filthy exhausts as they have a very soft blast coupled with the vagaries of the chain driven valves.

Thank you for this, very enjoyable to watch. (I remember Britannia-class engines on the Liverpool Street-Norwich line around 1960 when I was a small boy trainspotting at Wymondham. "Owen Glendower" is the sole name I can recall with certainty.) Now, can anyone explain to me why the exhaust of the Galatea is so dirty and that of Britannia so clean? People below have hinted at the skill of the fireman or the quality of the coal... but what are the factors involved?

It looks like the Jubilee fireman may have over banked his fire for the exhaust to be that dirty for that length of time. The Jubilee wasn't struggling, she clearly had plenty of steam and power in reserve as she is not easing her pace at all. The driver is keeping her at the pace that he senses is right to keep her moving without those 6'9'' wheels slipping. That speed will have been determined by the circumstances at the start of the climb.
