Nice video Mike, takes me back to having the head of my old mini in the 70's. Great fix with the pin misalignment too.

Well the pin is sot stop the plugs turning in the head so it is locked in place - things you have to do eh?

I remember with my dad making grinding paste for valves by smashing peace of that sanding stone block to powder adding bit of oil and that was grinding paste and it always worked. That was my job as a kid making pocket money with my dad sanding valve seats and washing parts. Luckily we kids didn't have PS4 back then.

27:29. You literally read my mind. As soon as I saw the offset and you pointing it out 'shitpart' just sprang to mind mate. Clever solution at the end too. I was thinking of an ultra fine cutting disc on the grinder but the dremel works too. Think it would need to be a bit meaty on the power to cut hardened steel but yours looks more powerful than mine.

Disappointed in you, using a proper valve spring compressor tool, LOL. Thought for sure you were going to use the hammer and socket technique!

Mike---Your going to put this engine back together and it will run perfect ,and you will never know what the problem was,by the way I have a valve spring compresser just like yours!!!

That intake port coking suggests long term heavy oil breathing getting into the inlet manifold.

but only on that cylinder - odd eh? Maybe close to the breather intake

I once had one of these with a misfire and it turned out to be oil starvation to the head caused by misalignment of the oilways head to rocker pedestals, the misfire was the rockers bushes running dry holding valves open, there was circular marks on piston tops caused by the valves

Hey Mike, you blew the COLLETS all over the bench, thought we were keeping them together !!

This engine is gradually driving you mad, I wonder if the injector pipes have been blown through, part of me would check the cam timing on a lobe by lobe basis but it can't have changed if it was ever right. Makes you wonder if something is in the exhaust manifold. That doesn't explain why the misfire goes away at higher RPM.... the only thing I can come up with (assuming the replacement injectors and pump are ok) is a valve that sticks at low rpm, again the compression test is good though. Well done for having so much persistence!
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
I even blew thought pipes myself - nothing in there The misfire will go at a higher RPM as it is being absorbed by the speed - difficult to explain Head was 100%
@marksmith5156
@marksmith5156 5 жыл бұрын
The higher rpms carries the cylinder that's not 100% with the other ones strange after all the checks done so far cant be much else to assume on but it is still a miss at low rpms what can you miss only leaves pistons and bores

Yes, I do understand, the higher rpm will mask it, very frustrating...

Hi mike I am rajeeva from Sri Lanka series Land Rover owner , I have a 1981 series 3 88’ recently I ve fitted a 5mb 2.25 Ltr diesel and I have the same issue, I ve been following your posts very closely and I don’t think it’s the head or valves or hot plugs or any of that , I feel it is in the fuel system , so far u have replaced or repaired pump injectors , why don’t you look at the CAM AC pump also , just an idea and I could benefit from the same

Could you measure the amount of valve lift with dti on the back of the valve washer to see if it matches the cam. I wonder if engine has been rebuilt in the past and the push rods got mixed up and a shorter one was installed.
