SLOW ROAMERS

3 ай бұрын

After a 16-hour ferry ride from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, we make a break for the mountains and attempt to access a remote mountain lake, a camp spot considered inaccessible without 4x4. This is our biggest mission yet! We'll push the van to its limits .. and possibly past? If you love epic views, nail-biting adventure, living on the edge, and watching a 2WD delivery van being put through its paces, you'll love this story! Ride along as we go do something crazy!!

When I did this trail in 2021 there were multiple landslides and washouts considered impassible. I was the first one to navigate through them, by myself, in my Jeep. The trail is a lot easier now, but back then, this van wouldn’t have made it an hour into the trail. Yes, we have heavily built vehicles. They are not built for just one trail or situation, they are to get through anything. When we did this trail again last year, we also did several side trails that, if attempted by this 2wd can, probably would result in the death of the driver. Props to these two for making it through the trail though. Drive whatever you want, just go on adventures, and be nice to people. No need to be haters.
@SlowRoamers

@@TheStoryTillNow no hate here, buddies comment just made me chuckle. From what I’ve gathered the trail changes a lot from year to year and the difficulty of the trail changes also dependent on time of year. I thoroughly enjoyed your episode when you did the pass on the way to AK, it was a great watch. Happy trails.✌🏼

Great video of my old tramping grounds. I grew up when 4 x 4 pickups were seldom seen. Mostly the Forest Service even the logging companies just had 2 WD with locking diffs. It's nice to see a person showing what a 2WD is capable of, although for most of the area it really was easy going. Little joke from a kid that grew up in the area and use to skinny dipping in those glacier fed creeks and lake. We always said to make sure you tied a string on it so you could find it:) I think you know what we meant.

Just to put this in perspective, in summer of 2023 four South Indian city boys who had just moved to Smithers did the Telkwa Pass in a 2003 Explorer that still had its winter tires on because some of our coworkers told them it was an easy trail. Because it is. It's a trail, not a road, but is far from difficult and is literally a "Honey, I'm goin wheelin, will be back by dinner" sorta run. That said, thank you for shooting some killer video of a stunningly gorgeous area, as my photography sucks and I'm always trying to make clear to people just how beautiful it is, so now I have good reference material.
@SlowRoamers
@SlowRoamers Ай бұрын
I honestly don’t disagree with you, it’s not a hard trail. If I had been doing the trail in my Toyota pickup for instance it would have been a total cake walk, easily completed in a few hours. The difference is weight, size, gearing & 4wd (assuming they drove it in a 4wd Explorer) and direction of travel. Our van is 8700lbs (100lbs over factory gvw), 2wd and 8.5’ tall, not to mention it’s literally our home with all our possessions inside. It was a challenge getting the van up some of the steeper hills and i was continually surprised that the trans had enough grab to keep on pulling us up. If our rear wheels had spun out we would have been stopped and likely turned around. Arguably we did the trail in the more challenging/ steeper direction and the tree tunnels were pretty dang tight. It felt to me like a genuine adventure and I had a lot of fun. I’m glad you enjoyed the views and that you now have a reference video to display the beauty of the area. Thanks for watching!

I'm like five or six videos into your trip now (just started tonight) and really enjoying your content. The algorithm coughed you up at random earlier this evening but now I'm subscribed and looking forward to seeing how this all pans out.

There have been a number of people who have suggested this. I may try them one day. I’m not sure if they’d really help in this instance since we have all the traction we needed, anything we lost would be on account of loose rock.

I REALLY liked your idea of dropping in a tranfer case just to gear down ...makes a lot of sense. I guess 19.5s aired "down" to 85 psi just arent gonna cut it. Lol. I singled out a Quigley cutaway to 19.5 railroad rims. Cant go below 85 or so. Lol. Incredible job. That was amazing... gotta say, i am liking two spare tires.😮 that's REMOTE.
@SlowRoamers
@SlowRoamers 3 ай бұрын
That’s the only thing we’re missing now for sure. Two extra tires is a lot of extra weight, weight is the silent and slow killer of vehicles. Keep that in mind.😁

@@SlowRoamers i just embrace the heavy. ..and plan for it. I run 19.5 tires for that reason and don't/haven't done your "rock crawling" ...its impressive for sure.

The inside passage is definitely on my bucket list, although I would most like to do it in a small cabin cruiser. I lived up in Telkwa for about 18 months and did an expedition that began with a trip through the Telkwa Pass, and ended with a camp at Work Channel Inlet, the exact opposite way you guys went. Work channel was and still is one of the most epically beautiful camp spots I've ever been to. The pass was a challenging and interesting trip in my 99 CR-V with a 2" lift and big tires, so props to you guys for making it in your 2wd van! Our current family vehicle is a 2005 Chevy Express, which i think is the same as yours. I moved to Alberta two years ago, but part of my heart remains in the north of BC. Absolutely love it. Cheers!

Radical!🤘🏼 that had to be a lot of fun. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda Crv are surprisingly nimble vehicles. BC definitely has our heart. I lived in AB for about 10 years and have some fond memories of it, but definitely realized how much I missed BC while I was there. Thanks for watching!🙌🏻

Hahaha, the winch is honestly paying us! Meg won it in an IG giveaway.🤣 Some OHV drivers actually pulled it out for us. They had to put two winches on it to get it out. They found us on the trail, thanked us for moving the boulders and handed the strap back. I was stoked, that’s not a cheap strap!
