MJ had plenty of bad songs, his forgotten albums her released in the 70s prior to Off the Wall were filled with them, Quincy Jones came along and saved his career with OFW in 1979

"Always On My Mind" has been recorded over 300 time. It hit 20th on the charts for Elvis, in 1972. The artist who had the best results with it was, Willie Nelson. Released in 1982, he got 3 Grammys for it in 1983.

Jan '88 - "Always On My Mind" was written in '71 and first popularized by Elvis Presley, though it was Willie Nelson's 1982 version I first heard and enjoyed. I kept a tally, and there were only ten songs in this video I didn't know well enough to sing along to. Mind you, I graduated high school in '85, so these songs ARE my teen and young adult years.

Honestly, to me, the Pet Shop Boys are mostly the band who gave an actor originally named David McDonald his stage name, because there was already a David McDonald acting in the guild, so he picked the last name of their lead singer, Neil Tennant. And then became the TENth Doctor.

In those Synth-Pop/New wave groups, Britain ruled back then. They were all from somewhere in the UK. I still like many of them to this day - never really stopped listening..Pet Shops Boys at 13:46 were are and still good band to me. I suggest the greatest hits - they were pretty much a 'singles' hits band; it's their best songs and they have many.

Keep in mind that this list was subjective. There were no rock or metal or jazz or blues songs on the list. What you really got was a glimpse of what we saw on MTV and VH1 daily, after school until bedtime through that decade. They put out full albums and about ten of the songs on it would become top ten hits, one month at a time. The next year they;d put out another album and music video then the process would start again. We were like kids in a candy store, gobbling it all up as the sugar high set in. 😂

Honestly, though, the first couple years of the 80's (80 and 81) were more or less an extension of the 70's. My father said the 70's didn't really end until 1982...I'm guessing because of the popularity of Olivia Newton John's "Physical" song and music video, I'm sure that ushered in the fashion of headbands and leg-warmers lol.

You’re missing out if you don’t watch the video. They show you how to dance to it and the story they are trying to tell in picture form so that you can understand the message in their music, in case you’re unsure what they meant by the lyrics. The video brings the song to life, so that there is another texture or artistic layer to it. The videos turned them into good actors that you want to watch while listening to the song. That’s why so many musicians end up being actors. They started off acting in their music videos, continued the character into their live performances and then got called to read for a script in a movie or tv show. It was up to them which side of the acting scale they went to. For example, I don’t think MJ or Prince ever acted or produced anything other than their music, music videos and their live performances (I consider Purple Rain, Princes way to bring his whole album to life with a live performance) but Madonna does both as well as acting in movies so did Whitney. Apologies for rambling on but breathing in all of this nostalgia is to blame. 😉

I'm an 80s kid, so watching your reactions and what songs you were familiar with was so much fun! MTV used to be like listening to the radio--but you were watching it instead. They had VJs (video jockeys similar to disc jockeys on the radio) to introduce the videos--wish they still did that, but now we just stream what we want to see. There were no TV shows or whatever. The more popular videos were in greater rotation, just like on the radio. If you wanted to see what was newer or more artistic at the moment, you would stay up later at night. Some of the really early videos look like "arthouse" videos because, in many ways, they were--very artistic and intentionally pushed boundaries creatively. Also, some of the songs/videos that seemed a bit odd in the countdown you watched were from movie soundtracks (Prince from the Batman soundtrack, for example), so it makes sense in context. I love that you enjoyed the music from back then. It was the best, and we had fun growing up! Cheers and congratulations!

As someone who grew up in the 80's I can say without a doubt that some of these picks are way off. One example is they had a song called Shaddup Your Face as the top song for April 1981. That song was nowhere near the top 40 the whole month. Meanwhile Kiss On My List by Hall & Oates was #1 for 3 weeks that April. That said, even with the errors, this list proves the 80's was unbeatable for music.

I luv Brits & Brit-English. Made me sad you'd not heard songs by iconic Brits, eg, Phil Collins & Sting/Police, to name 2. Wish your older relatives had played more early 80s artists for you bc many bangers were made in UK, 1980-1986. There were giants in the "We Are The World" video but u guys, being younger, didn't know u were looking at a group of legends assembled in 1 big room. Same w/Brit-made 🎶 "Do They Know It's Christmas time?" 🎶 charity album (UK charity song equivalent of "We Are The World"). Consider reacting to 1980s #2s - another set of many strong hits. Cheers.
