Actually, Carlos Santana was the guitar player for his band ( think like a Van Halen situation) and Rob Thomas was from Matchbox 20, not Maroon 5. Matchbox was more mainstream rock, Maroon 5 started off as more r&b based pop, but has been more pop over the past decade or so.

I think I can forgive y'all for not being aware of 1997's version of Candle in the Wind. Elton's original version was an 80s song dedicated to Marelyn Monroe, the 90s version was dedicated to Princess Di because she died around that time and it was sung at her funeral. Since y'all weren't born yet, it's fine. But yeah it was rare back then to see footage from another country (outside of the Olympics and huge world wide sporting events), but this was one of them and her funeral aired in the US too. 90s were my teen years and in fact I graduated HS in 2000. So yeah I knew all of these songs lol. Fun fact- when One Sweet Day first aired on the radio, I actually said, "Song of the Decade there" not known just how much on the nose I was because it would hold the #1 spot for 16 weeks for 23 years. Is anyone besides me sadden that it took until 99 to see Cher (if you saw the 80s video). Like she's one of those few artists to have #1 hits in multiple decades.

Six songs I didn't recognize...mostly Boys II Men. This is when my daughter was growing up and she looooooved listening to the radio. I played professionally when younger and quit just before I got married in 85, so I wasn't so in tune with the music scene after that. I still prefer the 1960's and 1970's over the 80's, 90's, and 2000's.

The song was remade by Wyclef Jean (who is Haitian) for the earthquake in Haiti in 2010

I'm always suprised how many Brits don't know Candle in the Wind. While Elton John didn't create it, he played it in tribute to Princess Dianna. I can't recall if it was at her remembernce on BBC or not. Thats where i remember it from. He was devasted by her death. As many of us were. I think I was a teen when she died. To be fair I also realize many Brits don't care much fo the royals anymore. I never really did myself. I only cared about Princess Diana because of her humanitarian work and big heart.

In the USA, Whitney Houston had 7 CONSECUTIVE #1 hits. That streak was broken with "Love Will Save the Day" in roughly June 1988. She had another 4 #1 hits, for a total of 11 #1 hits. She was the first and only artist to take the National Anthem (performed at Super Bowl XXV (1991) to the Billboard Top 40, peaking at #20. She was HUGE in the 80s and early 90s until she hooked with Bobby Brown and became a total crack head. Sad...she died from an overdose if memory serves.

The song debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart the day after its release on 13 September 1997, staying at number one for five weeks and becoming the best-selling song in the UK, overtaking the 13-year-old record held by Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" It's also incredibly hot & muggy a good part of the year. The roads are in terrible condition. No joke, you could always tell the second you crossed into Louisiana from Mississippi by the freaking potholes...also by the trash on the hiways. There is a serious lack of good jobs which leads to really poor health. The corruption among elected officials and police is startling. The schools can be quite bad. The racism is real. It's also where if you're brave enough that you can learn who you are. Loved every minute of my time there

I need to put this out there. Many "hits" are due to radio or video exposer. Since the internet and many pirate sights and peer-to-peer file sharing applications popping up, the "sales" of many genres of music where severely under recorded. This is especially dramatic in album rock and heavy metal. Since this genre was mostly targeted to a male audience and the guys were more readily attracted to the new technology most music was stolen in these years.
