The Lambton Worm is a captivating legend from County Durham in North-East England. Let me share the tale with you:
The story revolves around John Lambton, heir to the Lambton Estate. One Sunday, John skipped church to go fishing in the River Wear. While there, he caught a small eel-like creature with nine holes on each side of its salamander-like head. Ignoring warnings, he discarded it down a well.
As John grew up, the creature did too. It emerged from the well, coiling itself around a local hill (either Worm Hill or Penshaw Hill). The fully-grown worm terrorized villages, devouring livestock and snatching children. Legend has it that you can still see the marks of the worm on Worm Hill12.
The Lambton Worm remains an enduring piece of folklore, adapted into songs, pantomimes, and written works.
