I completely get the obsession. Americans have no logical argument here - what they call football is a sport that is not only a lot younger, but also one that has very little to do with feet. Americans think they're right about everything and hardly ever question their way of seeing the world - at least in my experience - so at the very least they deserve people contradicting them in this.

How I understood it. Both rugby football and association football were introduced to the USA. From Rugby Football => American Football was derived with different rules from rugby. The name "Football" stuck from that. Association football was shortened to Assoc football => soccer is how the name was derived . 'Soccer' is 19th century UK slang for 'football' and is short for 'Association football' ('soc'-'cer'). 'Rugger' is 19th century UK slang for rugby and is short for 'Rugby football' ('rug'-ger'). This is yet another of many examples of UK slang being imported into the USA, only to become common in the US at some point while disused or rarely used in the UK (there are many examples the other way around too, sometimes even both-ways being commonly-unknowingly re-imported). Americans and Brits would be surprised at how many words and word-pronunciations were common and originated in their own country and adopted in the other country while later ceasing or rare in their own usage.

Interestingly, the unallowed goal for England vs Germany in 2010 was seen by most Germans as justice for 1966 when England won the finals through a phantom goal (Wembley goal), it's funny to me that now the footballers are salty about that goal, despite it arguably being significantly less valueable, being one goal in a round of 16 game and England losing by 4-1 at the end, rather than losing a WC Final by one goal difference

...soccer is a Brittish term. That is where Americans got the name from lol. It was Association level soccer. Abbreviated Assoc. The Brits started adding "er" to words...for instance, rugby was called rugger. So they called association football soccer. It's even in news publications in Britain as soccer. The Americans figured that was what it was called, and used that name. Then the British eventually moved on from calling it that, and now pretend they have no idea where the term soccer comes from lol. And that is why karma, or God, or some other higher being will never let Englad beat the U.S. in the world cup lol.

Just to get the history of soccer name correct - it was the original name. In Britain, when the game was organized to be played among various university and colleges back in the late 1800s, they originally organized it into Association Football. They then shortened it to calling it Assoc. And then, the shortened it and made it easier to say by calling it Soccer. So, to be technical, the Americans are using the original name correctly.

Thank you! I was looking for this comment. Americans didn't just randomly decide to call it soccer. They have consistently called it soccer since the time when Britain called it that. Actually, American football was already a legit established sport here and "soccer" wasnt. By the time "soccer" became somewhat popular, football was too popular in America for us to change the name. By your logic of ‘the term comes from England’, then by the same logic I, as an Asian person could say ‘oh you whites hate racism so much but u started it xD’. Lastly the word soccer just makes no sense, it’s derived from ‘association football’, yet it doesn’t say anything about football, it might as well just be short for ‘association’ and not ‘association football’
