I have been amazed that it took until the 1860's for the Generals to figure out that maybe this isn't the best of tactics.
@drunkenork53734 жыл бұрын
They adopted close formations like that because the accuracy and relatively short range of the guns during that period. If you put a line of guys shoulder to shoulder you create a wall of bullets. Those formations were also designed to deter cavalry. Unfortunately as the weapon technology advanced and the guns became more accurate and longer ranged the tactics sometimes took longer to change. They were still fighting in close formations up to the end of the 19th century. But during the 1700's where this clip is based on these were the best tactics to adopt believe it or not.

@markturner42195 жыл бұрын
@@jeromeclements6532 'Accurate within the confines of what a film maker can and cannot do' It is not technically challenging to play the correct tune in a film. Even an amateur could do it. 'whether or not this tune would have been played at this time is, I'm sure subject to debate' No it's not. It is historical fact. At the time of this battle the tune 'British Grenadier' was the regimental march of the Royal Artillery and the Honourable Artillery Company, neither of which was at the battle. Of those foot regiments that adopted the tune some years later, none of those were at this battle either. 'And if it was inappropriate, so what?' If the film was merely purporting to be a fantasy historical romp, no big deal. However, when the claim is made that it is 'very accurate' , or as was said at the time of its release that it benefited from copious period research, then it becomes an issue. If such a basic easy thing is wrong, it doesn't augur well for the historical accuracy of the rest of the film. In fact, the film was frequently historically inaccurate, because Kubrik cut corners and used the extensive research that he had already done for his abandoned project on the Napoleonic Wars, so much of the period details do not take into account the many significant changes that happened during the intervening years - so it isn't 'very accurate'.

"'The British Grenadiers'" is a traditional marching song of British, Australian and Canadian military units whose badge of identification features a grenade, the tune of which dates from the 17th century. It is the Regimental Quick March of the Royal Artillery (since 1716), Corps of Royal Engineers (since 1787), the Honourable Artillery Company (since 1716), Grenadier Guards 'The First (later 'Grenadier') Regiment of Foot Guards' (since 1763), and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (since 1763). It is also an authorised march of The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, The Canadian Grenadier Guards, The Royal Regiment of Canada, The Princess Louise Fusiliers, and The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. The standard orchestration for the military band was approved during 1762, when the Royal Artillery Band (initiated during 1557) became recognised officially, and for all other 'grenade' regiments during 1763, when the remaining unofficial bands gained official status." - Ken Anderson Msc (2007). "The Early Days of Digital Computing in the British Army". p.31. Note: There are actual lyrics to this song.
