I was ten during his first Super Bowl (grew up about 20 mins from the stadium) and I still remember watching that game with my family and hearing his name. He retired before I went to grad school in the south, but I was surprised a few years later while tutoring for the athletics department at my grad institution to find out that his 52 cards speech was enormously popular on both sides of the ball. If I remember correctly he was also one of the first people Michael Phelps(a Baltimore native btw) talked to after he announced his retirement.

As a lifelong Steelers fan if there is anyone I give the utmost respect to is Ray Lewis (the ravens are in the same division as us so we see them twice a year and even a third time if we meet in the playoffs) when ever we played the ravens those games are always epic.

2:45 - That's John Harbaugh, current head coach of the Baltimore Ravens talking. He's biased when he says that. I still think he's right. 4:20 - Ray was one of seven defensive players to be named Super Bowl MVP. There have been 57 Super Bowls played. For comparison, quarterbacks are the most common MVPs with 32, and wide receivers have 8 MVPs.

Most electrifying linebacker ever, you knew he was on the field before seeing him. You could feel him, hear him yelling to his team, S+ player, leader, hypeman. As a patriots fan. Teams were definitely scared to face him and the ravens. Ravens had a reputation for heavy hitting, great defense & effort in every player just because Ray Lewis was leading them. They were one of the only teams to take down the patriots twice in the playoffs, in the 2000s dynasty 6x 🏆

If you want more defensive nfl players to check out, I suggest my favorite player I’ve ever watched: Brian Dawkins. The video by NFL Throwback will give you a good idea. He went by the nickname “Weapon X” and became the Wolverine at the start of every game. But he is such a gentleman.

The final Super Bowl was important bc the Ravens were a slightly better team the season prior (where they lost in their conference championship game from 2 fluke plays in the 4th quarter) …so the next season, on Ray’s publicly acknowledged last ride, the Ravens beat the Colts (originally Baltimore’s team, named for Maryland’s traditional horse racing, traumatically moved to the state of Indiana in the middle of the night in the 1980s), then beat Peyton Manning’s Broncos, then Tom Brady’s Patriots It was a magical playoff run

He also might have done a little bit of murder at a night club He was intimidating in every sense of the word. He would stop your offense, and Hurt the ball carrier, legally and cleanly As a fan of the Patriots, I’d genuinely get nervous for our players. Especially when he was out there with Suggs (another linebacker that would bring the pain too)

Absolute side note, but an afternooon radio talk show used to get Ravens personnel... not players, but staff, on it. And the guy who ran the audio-visual for the stadium was on, and he was talking about "Oh, you have to quiet the music at this point, per NFL rules, so you're no interfering with the game." But he also talked about Ray's entrance dance, how Ray told him, I want to come into this, I have a dance in mind.... so, he had Ray come to his house, listened to it, as as a middle-aged white man, did the Ray Lewis entrance dance for Ray, trying to show "oh, what you hear and what the fans hear will be a half second off, so THIS is how you have to time it"... and I wish there was video of that.

That Cundiff kick against the Patriots was painful as it was a playoff game....but we got Justin Tucker out of it. As a Ravens fan re: Ray Lewis...it was intense haha and fun to watch him play. When the Ravens won their first Super Bowl (XXXV) it meant alot to Baltimore. They had gone over a decade without an NFL team; this was the fifth season the Ravens had existed. And then he retired after they won their second Super Bowl. Crazy ride for any professional athlete.

Ray played the game like no one else as a linebacker.. the intensity the drive and the heart he had was undeniable. I'm a Raven's fan and that first Super Bowl win was all Defense and Matt Stover's leg because our offense wasn't that great.... lol .. Second Super Bowl win.. 12 years later.. Ray was the driving force. We had a better offense but could have never done it without Ray Lewis on defense and his total intensity for the game.

As a Ravens fan we always knew that our defense would be one of the best evey year regardless of what players came and went whoever was on that team, Whoever stood next to Ray was going to play the hardest they have ever played in their life every down,.. Not only was he the best middle linebacker ever to play but he made everyone around him better,. And his mentality spread to the offense as well,.. When you played the Ravens with Ray Lewis on the team you knew that by the end of the game your body would be purple and black.

Mert, Bookmark Joseph Vincent's Channel. He has some amazing video compilations of individual NFL players. 3:50. I am a NY Giants fan. Ray Lewis gave me nightmares during that Super Bowl, Every time that the Giants started to getting the offense rolling, Ray Lewis made a crushing play that led to interceptions or loss of yardage. As an aside, the greatest linebacker of all time is Lawrence Taylor. Ray Lewis is possibly the greatest MIDDLE Linebacker of all time. He was basically the Lawrence Taylor of the 2000s to the early 2010s.
@mikefortenberry4192

Technically, he’s the second greatest linebacker that’s ever lived. If you notice a commentator when he said he’s the greatest middle linebacker that’s ever lived and that could be argued, but Ray was a damn beast. He was a fucking problem. But the greatest linebacker of all time and maybe you can watch this later was Lawrence Taylor. He literally redefined the position.

Plainly put, every NFL fan had nothing bad to say bout Lewis....He, as the kids would put it, had that dawg in him.....He's in the rare company of athletes no one hated because all of us growing up during his career (1996-2012), wanted to play exactly like him (and it didn't hurt that he was basically a Reverend preaching to his flock every time he suited up for Football).

As far as best LB of all time, most American football historians would rank Lawrence Taylor above Ray Lewis. Which, from a talent standpoint, is a fair argument, but I do believe Ray Lewis was the best to play the position for the way he elevated his team. There's plenty of great individual players, but Ray Lewis was a special breed that made everyone around him better.

I doubt you still monitor comments from this video at this point, but you ask for Ray Lewis stories and I have 2 quick ones for you: Firstly is that if you're a true Ravens fan and we're blessed enough to see him play in person like I did many times, then you know that Ray coming out the tunnel and doing that dance.. It resonated differently in person. Because 70,000 people ALL felt ever ounce of his emotion and passion when he did that dance. Every person in the stadium was ready to run through a wall for Ray. And many times if you looked around you, you'd see hard working blue collar men, with tears in their eyes, from how deeply his intensity, passion, and emotion would resonate. It was a truly incredible experience, every single time. For a more personal story, I remember going to a charity bowling event Ray sponsored and hosted, and he got a bunch of Ravens players to participate. So you'd bowl with a Raven, and you would most likely get a chance to meet Ray and get a quick photo, but it wasn't guaranteed. I was devastated that day because not only was I not going to meet Ray at the end, but the whole time I had been put in a lane with my school bullies (unbeknownst to the family friends that got me a spot at the event and took me). It was awful, getting so close to meeting my hero and having that experience not just taken away, but tainted entirely by the same kids that terrorized me daily. I was maybe 11 at the time, amd started to cry. Ray, on his way out, noticed me crying and made time to come over and talk to me. I told him everything and the incredible part is what he does next and what comes after: he talked to me about the responsibility of being a man, to never let another man make me feel that way, and to always stand up for myself. It was a message that really took, and I can honestly say I was never bullied after that day. But he also took the time to speak to my bullies, and gave all of us a speech about the responsibility of a man to be a leader, and that a leader would not only do everything in his power to help a fellow man at a time where he was feeling like I was that day, but to defend and protect anyone too weak to do it for themselves. This (believe it or not) is a very summarized version because he spent a solid 20 minutes talking to us, amd those kids not only stopped bullying me, not only became my friends, but on a couple occasions they fought with or for me to defend me. I won't give you stories about his play, because you can find a million of them on YT. He was the GOAT. I'll give you those two stories because what made him truly special was his ability to lead men, and be a role model and a hero for an entire city for 2 decades. Love you #52, greatest of all time.
