if you visit Japan I really recomment going 2-3 days to Okinawa. Just google this Island and you know why I recommend it - it is the perfect tropical beach escape and if you like to relax at the beach this is really worth the trip (maybe schedule this at the end of your trip so you can relax for the last days!)! Though this is the hottest place in japan- therefore, the ideal time to visit Okinawa is right before golden week! I believe the place you said looks like San Francisco is Shikoku - this is a side view right when connecting to the main land (bridge!). The south is for the first visit the best (Kansai region). The people are more open and this is the economic center of japan. Tokyo is comparable to New York. In Kansai you have a short trip to Nara, where you can feed deers on the street roaming which will be cool for your kids and Kyoto is also not far away(in kyoto I recommend doing a tea ceremony or at least try the "Washoku" which are the traditional japanese sweets - mostly consisting of sweet bean paste - the beautiful thing here is the art ! In Kyoto there is Kyo Kiyomizu-dera, which is a very popular and big temple and on the ways there is a line of various shops for beautiful souvenirs. They also have the fushimi inari shrine(Fushimi Inari-Taisha) there which is one of the biggest ones with 10.000 torii gates in a row. But be warned- if you want to see all of them this is quite the hike (but very beautiful scenery!) ! In Kansai they have a "Kansai Ticket" for trains which is incredibly cheap if you use it right. The big old Castle in Himeji is also very beautigul - especially while the cherry blossoms bloom and right next to it is a very beautiful japanese garden - I bought at the local market mall there very cheap yukata which were absolutely beautiful and I never found a cheaper place to buy them. I also recommend to visit a real Ryokan with outdoor hot springs. The food in Ryokans is absolutely authentic and fresh and beautiful - this is a unique experience you should not miss in Japan. Try with your family definetly a japanese "Parfait" and " Crepe". These foods are awesome in Japan. I also recomment to try matcha latte! Osaka has the biggest food street in Japan called "Doutonburi". If you are in Osaka you should also try "Takoyaki" and "Ramen". If you might visit Hiroshima for historical education you should try the "Okonomiyaki" there ;). Also - combini's have seasonal and regional special products - the food in "conbinis"(=convenience store) is pretty good(if you compare it to our standards) so give it a try (they are 24/7 open so this is very convenient). They often have special mochi there- this is a nice treat you can try in different locations and also the onigiri(riceballs). My favourite was tuna and mayo - always a banger but there are big selections so try it even if it might seem boring- you might be surprised how good they are. Especially in Kyoto they have a lot of different variants but there especially you have shops specializing only in onigiri and the selection is crazy. Also a tip here: There are a lot of combinis which have a small table there and you can ask for boiling hot water so you can eat ther cup noodles right there if you want to. In Kobe you can eat the famous premium beed "wagyuu" and they also have local beer destilleries there ;). Also, unless you are visiting a Ryokan in the outskirts, you probably go best by train. Japan has a magnificient train infrastructure and you can reach most destinations by train or bus easily which is the cheapest form of transportation :) Kyoto in particular is using buses fyi. If you are around Hiroshima, I recommend to visit Miyajima by boat. There you can hike the mountain or go by gondola up the mountain. One of the very few famous shrine doors (torii) which is there build in the sea and you can walk there if it is ebb. It is a very beautiful scenery. Another beautiful season in japan is the fall - but be aware since this is taifun seaon. Also one final recommendation: Since you can see there is a lot to see in japan I highly recommend "cluster travel". Instead of picking wildly all the most famous things(in different locations) just pick 2-3 big places you want to visit and concentrate on the sightseeing there. Traveling takes your precious time seeing the best things since it is very common that you need to wait in line for attractions/places and also for food. So save time by planning is clusters and try to connect your sightseeing as much as possible. Make 3 days one place where you can easily reach the things you want to see - this is also better with a young family - kids are often impatient and easily tired. Take your time and plan for other cities the next time you visit japan (so basically stay in one region: e.g. Kansai for your first visit). 2 weeks is a good plan and imo mid april to the end is the best because the weather gets warm and the cherry trees blossom beautifully. Don't go any later than End of April to Okinawa since this is too hot for us europeans with sensitive skin. In general from may on the weather gets really hot and humid in japan and traveling is not fun ... so either go before the end of May or after mid August. A really good hostel chain I can recommend it "J-Hoppers". They are in all the famous cities in Japan and very cheap in comparison to a hotel(and really friendly and you can make a lot of travel friends there since this is a really popular chain for backpackers). Most of the time you have a shared kitchen and a school type of showers/bathroom with others but since mostly you will be eating out this is just a nice bonus.

There’s a British KZbinr, Chris Broad, Abroad in Japan channel who does similar videos on Japanese culture that are informative and entertaining too. So some of his most popular videos would be helpful. Like he has a video similar to this one about 12 things not to do in Japan with some similar and some different tips about being in Japan. As well as a video on budgeting a trip in Japan, and one on 21 things to do while in Japan are my main recommendations of his videos for learning about Japan in general. Unless you want to see the weird stuff in Japan then just check out whatever video he has that catches your attention about a random thing in Japan.

From Japan, I love your videos. This video that you've watched is amazingly well explained. All is true(At least to my knowledge) Other then that, in the end it depends on your schedule. But I assure you, we LOVE tourists with respect to our culture, we deeply appreciate it and will do our best so that you can enjoy your time in Japan. I hope you will get to come here soon. Till then good luck with your studing Japanese. I think you're doing great. PS 'Children's day' is a day to pray and celebrate your child's growth and development in future. We would put up KOI fish in the air because KOI fish turns in to Dragon after swimming up the water fall. This is done mainly for boys. For Girs, it is celebrated in March 3rd.

Masks are required to be worn, for example when going to hospital, but otherwise it is up to the individual. Many people in Japan suffer from hay fever, so there may be more people who wear masks on a daily basis than in other countries.

I am Japanese! I always enjoy your videos! One thing is most important to you when coming to Japan. Always be aware of respecting Japan's rules, traditional culture, customs, and ways of thinking, and make an effort to understand them. For us, it's much more important than you speaking Japanese. It's perfectly okay to get the rules a little wrong, as long as you're doing it with the utmost respect and effort. you will be welcomed. In fact, many Japanese people are kind to tourists from overseas. We especially love traditional culture and landscapes. We value consideration for others and a quiet and calm atmosphere. However, recently there has been a sharp increase in friction with some domineering foreigners, which has become a problem. Anyway! I think the information in this video is mostly correct. Especially many foreigners have big misunderstandings about Japanese food! There are countless types of Japanese food. Also, be careful with drugs! You will be arrested just for possessing it. Drinking and driving is also severely punished. If you have a tattoo, you are generally not allowed to enter public pools, hot springs, or gyms.

Just remember in Japan, just because it has a specific brand name, it is not the same. Everything is fresher, tastes better, made with more care. McDonald's, KFC, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Starbucks. The employees actually care about quality, it's scary. lol. It's awesome. Also don't forget about regional flavors you won't get anywhere else.

I am Japanese and most of this video is correct. We are starting to accept credit cards, but many private stores are cash only. Although not mentioned in this video, apparently first-time visitors to Japan are confused by the "Washlet toilets" at airports. "Washlet toilets" are quite common in Japan, so it is good to know about them.

First of all, the background music is very Chinese 😅 That being said, as a Japanese, I pay about half of my living expenses by card. Especially convenience stores and supermarkets are almost always paid by card. However, when I pay taxes, utility bills, or parcel delivery fees at convenience stores, I have to pay in cash because I can't pay by card. In any case, cash is certainly safer. In Japan, only about 2 million yen in counterfeit bills are found annually. I have heard that card fraud is about 10 billion yen. Don't worry about the simple English in this video, as most Japanese can understand it without bothering to translate it into Japanese. As long as we can hear the word "toilet," we will understand that they are looking for a toilet. By the way, a word "where" is learned at the age of 13. If you use the word "restroom," Japanese may not understand you, but you are British, so you would not say restroom. English education in Japan teaches American English, but most of the commonly known words are in British English. This is because British English was the predominant language when English was introduced in the Meiji Era. Even if we do not understand the pronunciation of tomato by Americans, we can understand the pronunciation of tomato by the British.

There are translation apps available on smartphones, so you don't need to learn Japanese. If you need help, you can ask someone nearby and they will be happy to help you. If someone runs away from you when you ask them a question, think that they are shy.Although English is taught in Japanese schools, people know they don't speak it well, so they run away when they get in trouble. Outside of the big cities, it is advisable to carry some cash. There are many stores that only accept cash!

Hi from Japan. As a British person who visited Japan last spring it is definately worth going as the Japanese are very nice. The Uk is also potentially Europes closest bonding to Japan as both countries have had a past alliance during world war 2 and the Uk is the most culturally flirted with european country with over 40 animes featuring a UK location and 65,000 japanese citizens making the UK the most popular european country in Japan to live in which makes me love Japan even more (even though an unfairly high number have chosen to live in America due to american pop culture bias and not enough live in Europe in contrast). I also recomend trying katsu curry and Takoyaki and fried tempura, especially a warming Katsu curry. Do make sure to carry an umbrella with you in case it rains though.

YOU CAN'T HAVE ADDERALL???? wow, Japan must be hell for people with ADHD, I've been taking that stuff since I was 8, I'd be awful without it. literally how are Japanese ADHD folks living? that's horrible... I feel so bad for them. and like, I understand that amphetamines are harsh stuff for people who don't need them, but for people with ADHD it literally just makes you normal. it just replaces chemicals that your brain isn't making, and causes you to feel less like shit. it's the same philosophy as anti-depressants, except I can go off and on adderall all I want with no adverse effects. to me, it's completely non-addictive in any way, like, I never experienced withdrawal symptoms whenever I'd go off of it for my entire summer break every year in school. once I was back in school, I needed it, and I probably couldn't have done school without it... in some areas, I still barely made it. wtf are Japanese ADHDers doing to cope? I can understand it being a controlled substance, but illegal? they literally need that.

@@RudiTheMan oh, thank god! okay, yeah, that makes a lot more sense... I thought the video was saying that it was illegal to have it, same as hard drugs like actual meth. thank you for clearing that up, like, I'm not in any position to be traveling to Japan or anything, but I was about to feel so bad for the folks over there... Japan's school and work culture already seems stringent in a way that would probably be really tough for people with ADHD, so I hope they have good resources. in general, I'm kinda curious about what disability services are like over there.

11:10 I'm living in Japan as well, and masks aren't required here since the end of last year's Golden Week. You should have a mask just in case when at an airport, city hall, or a doctor. Places like that might still have signs that you should wear a mask. But it shouldn't be mandatory anywhere. And Japan never had any penalties for not wearing masks in the first place.

As someone living in Japan, it's become FAR less necessary to carry cash in the past 5 or so years. I currently only need it to pay for my bills, for some stupid reason, I need to pay cash, even though the place I'm paying at has the ability to accept credit cards for other things. It used to be that there were a few major cash-only chains, like Daiso and Gyomu Super, but even they accept cards now. Hell, the Daiso near me just got the machines that will accept tap to pay! I think it's mostly only small businesses, like non-chain restaurants that might not accept a credit card.

I’m not from Japan, but am Japanese-Canadian. Oh, you may not remember me from your Twitch group long ago. Anyhow, I only got to visit Japan once for several months in the summer. It was very hot! I’d say almost all of this video is true. Now, I don’t know if I can go visit because I need medication for conditions. If yours an obvious foreigner visually, no problems usually! Since I look Japanese, I had to be a little more careful but was already used to many of the things since I am part of a Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre here and I wish they had an ATM! 😂 Funny the first word that came up to learn was the word I thought of immediately and use a lot here when around Japanese people since I’m not fluent either. Reminder: Sumimasen (sue-me-May- sen). We stayed in bed and breakfast places so my allergy was accommodated and replaced with yummy huge fruits or something. Never in restaurants. We took the bullet trains (Shinkansen) and that’s what you saw in part of this video. There are some shady areas at night, but overall it’s great! The reason if you have a tattoo (male or female) is because tattoos seen are thought to be related to Yakuza (Japanese Gang). I just cover mine up. As far as a guide to UK, I think you definitely should do one! I say this because I visited the UK and my host never drove me, so I took transit. I was surprised that some trains wouldn’t leave until quite late morning. I also had to go to a medical clinic and got no help caught there in freezing winter and got lost until I finally figured out how to get back…ended up catching flu for several days there. I also didn’t know about areas to avoid and missed my stop. When I got off, the person I had plans to meet said I was far away and we cancelled but here’s the kicker! I didn’t know that people were looking at me with my big camera (I used to be really into photography) and approached a group of people since I heard music I knew and liked. I got along with them when I told them I loved the music and they realized I knew all the rap lyrics and helped me a lot so I got back to where I was staying safely. 1 even waited and said be careful. These people were actually a small gang! Omg! I wish I’d known things and lucked out! I am a bit stressed because Canadians are clean but not in comparison to Japanese and hospitable. A long lost relative really wants to meet at my house and we aren’t comfortable with that. I know I will allow her to visit here and will have to get her a small gift (omiyage) that people give each other as a sign of respect. I’m fine driving her far to visit places and have to arrange a special pass for her to see certain things for the reason of her short trip here. She doesn’t speak English so we’re going to have a hard time. I understand most Japanese dialect but cannot speak fluently. Visit as many places and plan ahead. If you miss a bus or something where you have reservations, it’s better to contact them so they know. There’s all kinds of sizes for slippers, so no need to concern. Some places have changed I think especially due to the pandemic, and they’ve accommodated for that. If you go to a countryside, sometimes there are big buses and you have to raise your arm we figured out for the driver to stop. Someone please let me know if that’s changed. I perform or go to some of the Festivals they mentioned here. It’s nothing as huge as Japan! We just had kids day and it’s for boys and girls here. Maybe more for girls in Japan. They used to hand out tissue paper pigs on the street but I guess they don’t do that anymore since I went years ago, so yes, definitely have small towels. I hope you let us know when you and your wife may go! Are you taking your kids too? Borahe ;) Arigatou gosaimasu! 😊🇨🇦🇯🇵

As someone who just went to Japan and went to a Milet concert, just a heads up that getting concert/show tickets in Japan is an extremely tedious process and you should plan super early if you want to see someone - often times you're supposed to need to have a Japanese phone number and potentially a Japanese credit card to even buy a ticket. If you have a contact in Japan you can rely on they might be able to help set you up, though apparently they sometimes do ID verification. And this isn't even considering the lottery system to even have the right to buy a ticket in the first place. BUT, if you can get tickets, its incredibly worth it, the Japanese concert experience is amazing (no phones allowed!). Though the crowd is not the most energetic is a bit of the tradeoff

Nice video. There were definitely a few that I didn't know about. From what I've heard, the rules of wearing mask became less strict, but if you are inside a building, on a public transport or just in crowds in general, it's considered rude to not wear them. But that sentence about London got me a bit "It's not a dangerous place ... as long as you stay in the main areas. Don't worry." The way how casually you said it, yet at the same time implying that there are parts where you are better off not going.😅 But I guess that goes for every country.

It’s steep. It can land you in jail anywhere from 1-10 years and fines of up to 5M yen (about 30,000 Euros.) The 3 weeks he mentioned is probably from anecdotes of tourists since the visa restrictions probably led them to impose deportation instead of a long prison sentence. But three weeks in prison is no joke. Prisons in Japan are extremely strict, with the prisoners following a regimented schedule down to the minute. Even talking can only be done at certain times. Most of their waking times are also devoted to work. These are work prisons.

Not really the same thing, but still useful to know as a foreigner when traveling to Japan: If you plan on going to more than one city, get a JR-pass. It's only available outside the country and makes getting around by train SIGNIFIGANTLY cheaper and easier. I can tell you from experience, Japan summers are indeed SUPER humid. It really sucks! They do have plenty of cold drinks from vending machines, and ice-cream from convenience stores, but you're gonna get fat doing that. Little hack I used, is there are temples and shrines almost EVERYWHERE, and at most of them they have a little fountain you're supposed to use to clean yourself before approaching the shrine (look up proper etiquette for that) and the water was usually nice and cool. So I ended up stopping at every shrine I passed just to cool off with the cleansing ritual 😅 Most convenience stores have an ATM and allow you to pay with card, but yeah most places prefer cash. Check if they accept it your card though, I have a card with Chase bank and could use it everywhere, my friend had to find a specific bank and take out cash, so there were a few nights we had to wander around looking for his bank. Lastly, Google maps is your friend, make sure you can use it!

I was In Japan in December. Masks are pretty much not required anymore, especially foreigners. It is worth taking one incase you are asked somewhere to wear one, but that will be an exception. Also this video shows its age as if you are mainly in the cities almost everywhere takes card now. Yes take cash, as smaller places and outside cities are different, but we used cards everywhere.

As someone who's lived in Japan for almost 10 yrs now I can assure you that all this is true, although I would edit the language thing slightly. The average Japanese person, even in a city like Tokyo, does not speak that much English so unless you're just asking for very simplistic directions or questions, the language barrier is still very real. I would absolutely second the recommendation of avoiding Japanese summers since the heat and humidity has been getting worse and worse in recent years and I imagine that it would not be something you're used to if you've lived in the UK your whole life. The only exception for this is if you're going to northern Japan (Akita, Hokkaido etc.) as their summers are still quite enjoyable. Also kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKWZf3ihZ9x8b80 this is a train that takes you on a scenic route in the west side of Kyoto, though reservations are high in demand so if you ever do go you'll want to book this around the same time as you're booking your flight over.

Apart from hospitals, I think masks should be regarded as a personal choice. Yet, it's common to see many Japanese people wearing masks, primarily for reasons like 1. Hay fever, 2. Preferring not to show their faces either to avoid the hassle of makeup or due to lack of confidence. This has been a common sight in Japan even before COVID.

Ask Japan and Japan Explorer are excellent YT Channels to watch prior to going to Japan. Take a tutorial on Toilet operating. Seriously!! A couple of tidbits I read recently - School kids will not be required to dye their hair Black. A small percentage of Japanese have Brown hair, the schools would actually spray their hair Black. No more underwear inspections(!!!). There was requirement for standard underwear. Girls would be required to pull their skirts up so teachers could verify they were wearing the correct panties.

Most of what is shown in this video is correct. However, as far as I have seen, some of the Japanese KZbinrs who introduce Japanese culture on their KZbin channels are mixing some biased ideas and lies with the truth. I think it's easier to understand the correct information by listening to the experiences of people who have actually traveled to Japan.
