It’s a fall sport that has been pushed into winter. Playing in the cold is better than the heat.

NFL games are scheduled in the fall/winter in order to minimize the overlap with baseball season. When the NFL began in the 1920s, baseball was a much more popular spectator sport (this is no longer the case; but the tradition is already well established by now so there's no way to change it without upsetting a lot of fans).

MD = Maryland. All of our states have a 2 letter abbreviation. Hard Rock doesn't actually have a dome. It's got a partial roof, but not over the field itself. It just happends to be in Miami. It keeps the rain off the fans, but still lets in the heat and humidity. Super Bowl I did not sell out. It was played at the L.A. Coliseum on January 15, 1967. Green Bay Packers 35, Kansas City Chiefs 10 was the final score. Green Bay is the smallest city in the NFL. The population of Green Bay WI is 107,015 as of 2021. Lambeau Field holds 81,441. There are an estimated 147,000 people on the waiting list for Packers season tickets. It's estimated to be about a 30 year wait.

The reason American football is played in the Fall is due to it being a game invented on college campuses in the late 19th century. Rutgers University played the first ever football game against New Jersey University (now known as Princeton) on the 6th of November in 1869. It quickly became a college sport that was played in October and November until the schedule got expanded into September in the 1940's. And since the school year starts in September, traditionally, it made more sense to push the season later into the year than earlier into the summer. Cause early leaders of football did not want it to clash with baseball for viewership.

The reason why the NFL holds their seasons during the fall and winter seasons is because of the players, they wear padding and if they played in the heat of the summer, you’d be seeing a lot of players collapsing from dehydration and possibly dying as I’ve heard of that happening during training camps prior to the regular season in August

Some cold weather teams enjoy the homefield advantage of cold weather as the playoffs approach. My team is Green Bay (Outdoor iconic stadium) which has a similar climate to Minnesota (Indoor Stadium). Minnesota used to play outdoors and they went to 4 Super Bowls in the 70's (lost them all) and then built an indoor stadium in the 80's and have never been back. I would never want my team to put a roof on Lambeau as it would take away a huge homefield advantage (although Green Bay has not taken advantage of this recently). Teams from warm weather climates do not like the cold in general, players on Green Bay may not like it as much either but at least they are used to it because they live in it. The cold can be shocking if you don't live in it.

NFL in the summer temperatures would be way more dangerous. A lot of players struggle with dehydration and exhaustion at the start of the season. Snow and cold temperatures are uncomfortable, but the major health risks (especially at an amateur level) happen when the temperatures are the hottest. A lot of that has to do with the pads/helmets and the overall physical exertion it takes to play this game. That is why games don’t start it until the cooler months of the year. Most people say “football weather” is around 60-70°f

This was done before they announced plans for the new stadium in Nashville, because that one's going to be a dome. I think it's going to be a little small but Allegiant is too and they've got the game tomorrow. As for Buffalo... it's a city but a small city. I don't think they even have a chance for a WrestleMania, let alone a Super Bowl, and as I said to people complaining about the lack of dome in the new stadium build, it doesn't help any to have a dome if there's no hotel space -- and as regards weather for other games, they STILL would have to have a hotel added _on the grounds_ (possibly connected to the stadium) to allow games to be played when there's a travel advisory. Plus although 2020 proved that the NFL is okay in extreme circumstances in playing without fans? They probably still would rather not do so. Anyway, I still think the new stadium's going to rock, and I'm convinced there's going to be a Summerslam and some big concerts there, though the one act that I'm sure could sell it out in THIS landscape? Ironically, it's Taylor Swift. #awkward

While we (Indianapolis/Lucas Oil) have only hosted 1 SB and that was back in 2010 after we got the stadium built in 2008, it’s still a top 10 or even top 5 stadium in the NFL. Plus to add on, it was a HUGE success? I’ve even heard several NFL Media figures, NFL insiders and just other well known figure in sports media say that they thought Indianapolis was one of the best, if not THE best jobs hosting the SB. They’ll usually list much of the same reason they list when saying why they love the NFL Combine being hosted here in Indy/Lucas Oil every single year and how they believe it (NFL Combine) should continue to being hosted here every single year for the foreseeable future.

The reason MetLife, the stadium that will host the World Cup finale, was a miracle is due to it being on the East Coast of the USA. Normally, weather in NYC/NJ is frigid AND it snows. On that day though? On that specific day? It was a sultry 55 degrees. It was damn near spring. Clear skies. Warm air. A complete miracle that this happened.

Buffalo is a great CITY with great fans though, and the current stadium has room for 71k fans, one of the biggest in the NFL for a long time

NFL season begins the weekend following Labor Day, which is the 1st Monday in September. The season is 18 weeks, then 3 weeks for playoffs, followed by the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl is the nest week. So 23 weeks from early September is Valentine's Day. You can't just play around with dates of sports seasons here. The major sports are interlocked in a finely-tuned dance based on the academic year. Football starts in early September, when school starts. Get back to school in January after Christmas vacation and it's time for basketball and wrestling and half your football team are competing indoors in other sports.

NFL teams used to have a season similar to college ball. Colleges usually end their regular season by the end of November. But with more new NFL teams added, and the number of games being played by NFL teams during a season going up every few years, and the post season taking so long, the NFL seasons now continue to earl February.

Yeah most of the criteria comes down to capacity and weather. With the game in February you have to pick a dome stadium or a place with year round nice weather. Recent host cities like San Francisco and New York were riskier than they probably needed to be. You can play football in the snow but for your championship game you want as many factors to be as neutral as possible to get the most fair outcome you can produce

The fly in ,akes the Oshkosh airport the busiest airport in the world for the week it's there. Now the weather yeah that kills it. I've seen Green Bay hit -40 around Superbowl time. Few things that could be considered reasons for why football happens in fall/winter instead of summer. Initially, football was a collegiate sport. It was played in the fall after school started. By the time there was any significant professional level and potential for television and radio broadcasts being a profitable thing, baseball was already a summer sport that was huge and would have been very hard to compete against for broadcasts. There is also the big issue of heat. It can get extremely hot during the summer in parts of the US. With a sport like baseball, you aren't constantly running and you get plenty of time in the shade in a dugout. With football, you would have athletes who are running a lot and exerting enormous amounts of energy while outside in 40C weather with direct sunlight and all while wearing heavy gear. Heatstroke would be much more dangerous than being chilly and having to layer.

Football is in the fall/winter due to television now. Baseball, which plays in half empty stadiums and has seen ratings drop would probably be relegated to a small cable network like the NHL which was so bad it once was on the Outdoor Life Network.
