A lot of foreigners complains of no-striking up with locals. You need more space, they too much space (become effectively fence). once universally too much space, then very difficult to reduce (except with more pets to fill up space?) bcos it's out of your control. On the other end, more or less you can control to some degree.

As a Singaporean, I'm fine with sharing food from a few dishes, you get to taste a bit of each, with the condition that a common spoon or chopstick is used. I don't like the idea of someone's spoon/chopstick that's gone into the mouth and then dipped into the shared dishes. I think the use of "please" depends on what kinda situation. If we are asking a question, we'll just say "Can I have this?" instead "Can I have this please?" The please is like a redundant word since it's already considered polite to be asking first before taking/doing. However, other situations like "please take a seat", "Please be quiet" etc. In other a question form doesn;t usually come with a "please" for reason stated above. At least that's how I see it. I actually think the mandatory use of "please" and "thank you" together is kind of superfluous and even "overkilled politeness" to me. Some even feel British , like the Japanese, are fake in their politeness .

@@xxuenii Same here. That's why I think we Singaporeans are not so used to having "please" and "can I/you...." unless we are asking a favour or urgent request. Things like ordering food or asking for something non urgent "please" seems to indicate desperation.

When I was living in Singapore, I always avoid the sun, when I moved to Sweden, I started to worship the sun. So I fully understand what you are saying. Personal space is natural here but not in Singapore. Too many people around. Sharing food is common in Singapore, Swedish never share food. Taxi is cheap in Singapore compared to Sweden, so it nice. I take taxi in Singapore most time. Bakery are different in Singapore, didn't know Mac and pancy in Singapore. You must try kopitiam, its a social things, try kopimilk. I don't like kopi in plastic bag, infact it should be ban.. Its not good for health. I like kopi in condensed milk can, very nostalgic. Bathtub is nice, cold bath is good. Singaporean are polite, but in different ways. Transport there are the best, Singaporean just love to complain about everything. They have no idea how lucky they are.

Hahaha. I totally agree with you that we tend to complain about everything. But i guess, the complains do help to improve efficiency and services in some way or another. And of course, we always feel that we can do better than whatever we are complaining about. We have got very high expectations. Some Singaporeans are rude, but many are polite. And Mostly are introverts. They dont really talk to strangers, not even small talks. But they are kind at heart actually. So please dont mind us if we fail to say thanks verbally. If you try and observe, you will realise that we tend to give quick subtle nods or bows. It is our form of saying thanks but we are just too shy to be overly expressive. Mmm. The drivers here are mainly impatient. Perhaps, it had got to do with our fast pace of life. We got tonnes of work to do, many friends and appointments to meet, but time is a limiting factor. So much so that we are usually rushing for almost everything. For instance, if our meeting got extended in one, and we have another meeting following thereafter, we are technically running behind time. That is why, many drivers in Sg are usually impatient and they will drive through the zebra crossings even though you are still walking on it. But most of them will wait till u have safely passed them before they drove behind / past you. Please do not mind us. Many of us are harmless and nice people. If you get to know the individuals better, you will realise that.

@@violetsun7409 yea honestly the one thing I wish we could improve about our culture is being a bit less introverted and more open with our gratitude. Although I feel that as the generations go by we're getting better as I definitely think the younger generations are a bit less introverted haha

For the sharing food point, it also depends on the cuisines. Most western foods are pre-distributed before serving, so everyone get abit of everything. Whilst Chinese foods are cooked dish by dish, it just wont make sense to distribute again, everyone just share together

Born and bred Singaporean here. I feel like the comfortable personal space “radius” varies across countries. Singaporeans do care about their personal space, but perhaps the comfortable “radius” for Brits is way larger than for the typical Singaporean (small island, many humans so naturally adapted to more hoomans per square area???). When I was travelling in Korea/China, I felt the people there didn’t care about personal space at all (!!) and ppl were constantly too close for comfort!!

Yes I think M&S should experiment with expanding their supermarket wing here in Singapore. I was so blown away by the sheer size and range of M&S in London. Granted some outlets here have a mini mart section (wheelock...vivocity) but still can be improved. But I guess they'll have tough competition versus NTUC.

There are more working foreigners here than local working in Singapore, you can never tell if he or she is local, just because people complain in Singapore you claim they are Singapore is kind of baseless. I was born in Malaysia and most of my friends who are working in Singapore, they complain just about everything while in Singapore, went they are back home, they too complain just about everything in Malaysia too. But in all honesty, I hardly see or hear my local friends in Singapore complain about their public transport or anything for that matter, they have learn to accept the fact that they can’t expect more. So I do know where you get that fact about Singaporean complain the most here. If anything that is true, most people around the world complain the most about life even though the have live a better life than others. In my opinion for better or for worst, if you can adapt and learn to accept another culture while you are there, you will be more successful, you can live anywhere, than those who can’t and not willing to adapt. Like most of my Malaysian friends, even back home, they are not happy about life. But surprising they talk about life in Singapore more than life back home now. I classify them as weak, funny and ungrateful people. Well thanks for sharing it is an eye opening, I hope you are not too offended by my comments. Good day!

Sharing dishes at the table is an ancient Chinese habit which many of us grew up with and enjoy. I like the variety and being able to try a bit of everything instead of being confined to a few dishes. No harm in continuing this practice so long as we take care to use serving spoons for each shared dish. I’m also glad to see that many western restaurants here (even high end ones) recognise this local preference and allow sharing of dishes, which is more enjoyable, economical, cosy and reduces food wastage (good for the environment!).

The humour is a little in your face though in that one. Haha.. I am going to miss this about you so... much!! No one in Singapore does it as elegantly as you do. Yes, I’ve had issues of some people not understanding personal space. For most part it’s not a thing here so I often just have to step back or away on my own. It used to irritate me when my girlfriend always wanted to check my order first and then choose something else so that we can “share” our separate meals. Eventually though, I caught on and started enjoying having more variety at meal times. I guess she got me to become more of a foodie, when I used to just “Eat to Live”. I definitely have more in the vid I can relate to as well but will stop here. It’s always nice listening to your perspectives Georgia! 🙂🙏🏼

Lost should not be an issue. We have Lost and Found office. My problem is I never have what I should. So to lose is an impossible task.

I once had a Scot for a math teacher. I knocked the door at the teachers' room, and the Scottish teacher asked me who i would like to see. I said, "i want to see Mrs XXX." He was very offended. He said, "Mind your manners, ypung lady!" Then he shouted across the room, "Hey, XXX, someone WANTS to see you!" After that, i remembered to be polite whenever when i was around him.
