Bring your own throwing weapons, then the team with the most coordinated attacks has an advantage. Effectively the throwing weapon meta creates a pre-melee dodgeball scenario then whoever takes the lead going into the melee gets the benefits.

The problem is really that the devs never really did the things needed to make a competitive game last ... it had nothing to do with match balance, but rather lack of variation in gameplay. Adding ball and chains, or other game modes or a map-editor could have made this game something great. The devs were just milking it ... or lacked the ability or desire to to expand it. I think a Cavalry Game-mode with a 'protect the president' (King?) for both sides, could have been cool. Or a map-editor.
