I have a great friend who passed a few years ago due to drug abuse. He showed me this song before I knew his struggles and years later this still jerks my heart way too hard. I wasn’t there for him in the end, and I miss him more then I can explain. So many feelings in this tune.

You wrote this 2 years ago but I feel the need to reply. I want to say I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend almost 5 years ago and we danced to this dumb song together that is still hard to listen to now (Riptide - vance joy) and one of her favorite songs (born to die - lana del rey). She died due to her drug abuse as well. It landed her in a place and with people who didn't value her life. And I was not there in the last year or so of her life. The week before she died she contacted me and we talked about her coming home so we could hang out again. I didn't get around to it because I was busy, and any number of other excuses I told myself. A week later she was gone. About 4 years prior I lost my godchild, her baby girl. She had my middle name. I only hope they are together somewhere. I will never stop missing them. I hope you are doing alright.

Whoever directed this video knows mythology. In the legend of Theseus, Theseus must use a string to guide his way through a labyrinth so he can defeat the minotaur and become the hero. Obviously the man in the video is represented as a minotaur (Bulls head, mans body) and if you watch when he reaches the end of his rope his hands turn from a mans to a beasts. He then just wanders aimlessly through the labyrinth that is his life, lacking his guiding string, spiraling down down down until he breaks. He then confronts his issues aggressively- only to remain a monster in the woman he loves eyes in the last fleeting seconds. And she doesn't accept the flowers.

I think this song may not even be about a relationship at all. I think that's a metaphor, although certainly also a concept the song deals with. My interpretation (not necessarily the band's) is that the lyrics describe the way suicide and early death is glorified in our culture. The hook "I can make you love me" refers to the way everyone who knew a person who committed suicide and/or died young suddenly claims to have loved them, regardless of whether they did or not and how close they were to them. The singer believes that suicide is the way to get attention and love, another belief symptomatic of our society. I also the song talks about how our self-worth relies upon the opinions of others, and when we place all its weight on one person (such as a lover) we leave ourselves dangerously vulnerable. People are unreliable, and centring our lives around one person is never wise.

Regardless of the cause of death, we also tend to remember only the best parts of those we have lost. We tend to glorify them, not remember the hurt they caused or any shitty things they did. It's strange how the mind does that.

There's so much desperation in the lyrics. "I can make you love me", is like a phrase you declare that irregardless of the person's feelings being requited or unrequited, you'll make them (somehow) love you back. It's like the highest point of wanting neurotic control over another person's emotions, specifically love. I find myself saying this phrase under my breath at times.

Everyone is saying that this is a song about a selfish dude who wants to make a woman love him by suicide. At least for me, it definitely isn't. I feel this song is about depression and suicide, but in different, I think deeper, ways. The beginning, "If you're reading this then that means that i am dead" is supposed to make this something like a suicide letter. They have had that letter ready for a while, believing they would end their life someday, they wonder; "What was the last thing you told me". The night is over, everyone wakes up to start the day, or goes to sleep after a night of partying; but they have one more place to go, the place they will be alone; either the place they will commit suicide, or perhaps, afterlife, death. They are roaming the city, feeling hopeless, lonely, depressed, thinking about what life would be after they killed themselves, thinking about their funeral. Although the line "I hope you're happy with what you're doing" may come off as passive aggressive, but I think it's just as I think it would be in a suicide letter, caring for their loved ones that one last time; hoping the loved ones are happier than them, hoping they aren't feeling the same way. As I said, I think they are feeling alone, a mistake, that they shouldn't be alive, hat they are worthless and that no one loves them, because right now they hate themselves and can't fathom how anyone could have any positive feelings towards them. They feel no one loves them or loves them enough, no one tried to help, to stop them; so they will make them love them. Suicide attempt is a cry for help. Self-harm is a cry for help. Sometimes, unfortunately, there is no opportunity to help, because the person dies. But nevertheless, they get attention. Everyone only remeberd their good sides and forgets the bad ones. There is a rule to "not speak ill of the dead" in our society, and so people remember only the good parts about the dead. And that's exactly what they want to achieve; they don't see anything good about themselves, but maybe others will, after they die. They can't see good things about themselves, but the dead are always appreciated and respected, so maybe the living will remember them as good anyway. Dead artists achieve more recognition and so "you gonna fall in love with my work a lot" is a reference to that. No one helped, no one stoped them in the end, so they will make other "hate the way they left them behind" "I can make you love me" through suicide, because maybe then you will notice something is wrong, that there's help needed. And that's how I interpret the song.

I know this song has been talked about as a passive agressive suicide letter. But for me I see it from my own personal experience of giving everything you have left to give to somebody and they don’t appreciate it or love you the same. You get so tired and upset and frustrated that it does lead to these dark thoughts, and I did start to believe that maybe the only way they’d love me is if I was really dead and in my head to be appreciated and loved by this person was more important than life itself. Sad but true, I’m happy to be out of there
