You may not realise it, but Ireland is not a British isle, and it is regarded as an insult and a throwback to colonialism by referring to our country as that. It was never accepted by the Irish people but was foisted onto us by the British coloniser, and since we are an independent republic and no longer a British colony, it is not in use here in Ireland. Additionally, it was agreed by the British since 1998 to desist from referring to Ireland as the British isles. Unfortunately the British media and others continue to disrespect Irish sovereignty by using the term.
