just a few notes: -Ciao/Hello : yeah, in Italy we have many ways of saying hello, and there are specific rules on how and when. To simplify, forget "buon giorno /buonasera" (good morning / good evening) for a moment and remember: "ciao" is used to greet friends, relatives and family; "salve" is used to greet strangers, older people (not family members), people with a higher "rank", shopkeepers ... The easiest solution is: if not your friend, use "salve" -cappuccino: you can ask for a cappuccino at any time and you will have it, but after the morning you will be looked at like an alien -Breakfast: if you have breakfast at the bar, you usually only find sweets. In some regions you can find savory things like toasts, "pizzette" (small pizzas), sandwiches and some local savory specialties. this is because in Italy breakfast is light and fast and the first real meal is lunch. In hotels, camping or tourist facilities you can find breakfasts called "continentalei" (continental) which include eggs, hams, cheeses ... and many other things not usual for Italian culture. -Cheese and fish: like cappuccino, you can ask for it and have it, but you will be looked at like satan in a church. -tap water: in Italy you CANNOT have tap water. Restaurants and bars cannot serve it by law, they can only serve bottles (closed). It is a legal matter. (long enough to explain, but basically it serves to ensure the total safety of the water you will drink). Sometimes it can happen, for example at the bar, to ask for a glass of water, and see the bartender open a bottle behind the counter (or use an already open bottle behind the counter), but only on this occasion (when you can clearly see where does the water come from) -eating : eating is a moment of aggregation and relaxation. Take your time and enjoy the moment. Many Italians don't even answer the phone when they eat, just to understand how meal time is important. Eating calmly and enjoying your meal is also a way to respect those who prepared it and let them know that you enjoyed it. -drinking: quite easy: drink less, drink better.

About drinking it depends... If I want to get drunk with friends I drink every kind of stuff until I'm lost... If I drink for enjoyment I drink good stuff (like red wine with beef, white wine with fish, beer with pizza, a good cocktail for appetizer, a bitter at the end of the meal)... I think what and how you drink just depends on your targets.
@Anonymous-kp3jf

In one of the 5 autonomous regions the water thing might not be true. Research before you visit a specific place is paramount
@cheshirecat3981
@cheshirecat3981 11 ай бұрын
@@Anonymous-kp3jf tell me which region, and also mention the exact regional legislation with number and date. I don't remember there being any regional legislation that can contradict national legislation. The issue regarding water, and the obligation to serve only closed bottles at the table is a national regulation regarding health and food safety (art. 13 Legislative Decree no. 181/2003). A restaurant COULD serve you tap water BUT it should indicate this with a label on the carafe and, on the label, list origin, date, time of collection, and all trace mineral contents, exactly like on the labels of commercial water bottles. As you can imagine, this is absolutely impossible to do in reality, so no, no commercial business can sell you tap water for human use. If they bring you water in a carafe at a restaurant without a full label, it's illegal in Italy... but, since it's Italy, no police won't give a shit about sanctioning the violation. Furthermore, selling tap water in Italy would create a problem regarding the fiscal management of the warehouse and regarding the declaration of receipts. Not being a product packaged with a purchase note, with traceable warehouse movement (I buy 100 bottles, I sell 90 bottles, during an inspection by the financial police there must be 10 bottles in the warehouse), and being a product that I also use in kitchen without particular control, I could not declare (or declare less) the sale at the table and not pay the taxes, or I could declare a greater sale than the real one, paying the taxes and declaring a profit that did not exist, carrying out in fact a money laundering (I explained it very simply even if it is a little more complex, but it is a method of illegal money laundering that has already been done in the past).

Yeah other than the fact that no matter what most bartenders won't comment wether or not they find the tourist order strange cause that would be unprofessional and rude, but also a lot of my italian friends also get cappuccino in the afternoon for 'merenda', I think what is more weird for us is when you get for example cappuccino together with lunch (like eating an hamburger and drinking a cappuccino with it as americans do)

As an Italian, here's my personal opinion: 1) Those "unwritten rules" might be true, but remember that restaurants and cafes are commercial enterprises, their aim is to sell you as much merchandise as possible: if you want 10 cappuccinos, with fish and cheese and whatever in them, they will serve you everything, of course; 2) The kisses thingy isn't really a thing, in the average: a (very) small percentage of people do that. Thanks for the good video.

"Ciao" is an informal greeting, to be used with friends or relatives. If you don't remember "buongiorno, buonasera..." it's always safer to use SALVE in formal situations. Basically if you want to drink a cappuccino, especially in tourist areas, any barista will serve you a cappuccino. As for breakfast you eat the typical English breakfast whereas here people usually have a coffe/cappuccino and a croissant at the bar, while at home they drink coffe, caffellatte or tea and eat biscuits, bread and jam, a yoghurt... In large hotels English breakfast or Continental breakfast are served. Pizza is a sort of sacred food in Italy: you can't spoil it with pineapple or ketchup (which has sugar among its ingredients). It's like making spaghetti alla carbonara and add single cream to the eggs!!! There's a common saying which goes more or less like this: "Any time an Italian speciality is spoilt that way, a grannie gets a shock and dies!" (grannies are usually considered repositories of cooking traditions). Love your reactions.

Hi! I think that this "guideline" is meant for people who want to fully integrate with the Italian culture, maybe they're going to live permanently in Italy and so it would be great for them to learn these tips. But I guess that if you are a tourist you can act as you like! It's nice to have tourists in your own country; these is just how we behave on a daily basis😊 Ps: the girl in the video is not Italian, whereas the guy is Italian, I guess from the accent that he is from the south of Italy, however he talks quite slowly in this video, I think it's because the channel is meant for foreigners

Tourists are always welcome here, but those who follow these suggestions are even more. For example, if you ask for a cappuccino in the afternoon, nobody will deny you that, but you will be considered "the usual tourist" that knows nothing about the country (s)he is visiting. However, it is absolutely false that Italians never get drunk: we don't during lunch or dinner, but pubs are very appreciated here and you may end up coming across wasted people. PS: the guy telling the "rules" is Italian as well as bartenders, everyone else is not.

I'm 35 years old italian from North of Tuscany and I've found out the "no cappuccino after lunch" thing on this kind of videos, never heard before. The "sweet light breakfast" is true, but you can easily find at the bars the "salato" (savory) which usually is puff pastry filled with tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham or a little pizza also made with puff pestry or small focaccia filled with salami, ham, parma... Never heard before the "kiss on the right cheek" too, in fact I actulaly kiss the left cheek first

Hey man, you're great! Well, as an italian I think I can write something: it is not a problem to be a tourist in Italy, personally I love tourists, always ready to help if in need. Actually you can ask for an "americano" (pay attention, is different from "lungo" or "alto") at any bar; for breakfast you can ask for something not sweet, we don't have eggs and/or bacon, but bread, ham and so on (personally I eat a lot for breakfast). Asking for a "cappuccino"after breakfast is not a big deal, my spanish friends ask for it at any time because they liked it very much and it was not a problem at all. Because I have many problems with food I remember I asked at the bar where I used to go a breakfast with cereals and orange juice for example, and it was not a problem. About chees and fish is pretty true that we don't put chees on fish or mushrooms. You can put if you want, but for sure someone will wisper "that person doesn't know how to eat, maybe is not italian too". If you go into a bar and ask for a cofee/cappuccino or anything that you can see inside and they answer "no" because of the wrong timing. ---> change place! Or try to change region!!! P.S. I can accept pizza with ham and pinapple, but DO NOT put ketchup on pizza... please!

In Italy there is (there used to be) an idea that tourists are not very well mannered and generally tasteless . It is an idea that got generated in the 60s that stuck around somewhat as a stereotype till the end of the 90s (cannot speak for what happened later as I moved out of Italy around that time. I would imagine the stereotype is still somehow alive, albeit the way people behave in different countries has become more homogeneous as many more people move and/or travel around these days. "ciao is a way to say hi, but it should be used just with people you know or of your age group (while you are a youngster)

As an italian, about the tap water: I'm not too sure cause it could be slightly different in some cities, but personally a few times i found tap water being sold in restaurants near me, and it was always because they had a some sort of water filter or depuration systems. The restaurant need to garantee that the water is safe to drink even for people with certain problems. In this case you as a consumer would still pay for water but really less, or pay like usual but don't make you pay for refills. Now with covid i dont think they could be able to do this anyway tho...

Binge drinking is becoming more popular with the younger generation. Older people especially don't get drunk often since they handle alcohol really well, and if they do get drunk it's often by mistake. I never remember relatives being drunk although many bottles of empty wine and beer were always present during parties and family gatherings.

I always ask for a cappuccino after lunch and none laugh at me. Maybe in the southern Italy they're a little more 'traditional'. I remember visiting my uncle in Salerno and the owner of a bar made me the type of cofee he wanted and also stirred it for me...I was speachless, but he was right, he was offering me the best product he had and I liked it very much. Italians usually do offer the best (stay away from tourist traps like shops or restaurants because they're cheap af and often they're not owned by italians) If you're going to have a bad mix with food (like cheese on fish) italians will stop you. There's a reason why there are food rules, it's for digestion. A bad digestion can slow you down physically and mentally. We don't need to 'get loose' as often because we have a very stress free life, compared to other countries, we're at ease most of the times and when we 'have fun' it's a specific event (like going to clubs) but we don't 'get loose' every minute we're not working or sleeping. We're already happy.

It is not common because quality is not the best if you're not in the mountains and they prefer to sell you a bottle (tap water is free, or it should be). The kissing thing between males applies only to southern Italians, and just between friends, I wouldn't suggest trying and kiss a stranger after some chit chat at the pub instead of saying goodbye except you're dealing with a, ehm, mafia man. It's definitely out in northern italy. Here only some women do it between each other, or sometimes male with female friends, but even among them it's not the rule. The pizza orthodoxy also is still strongly enforced in the south, while here in northern italy they "love the alien", you can find pizza with anything on it, from nutella to sushi, (but I think it's not pizza anymore) And thinking about forbidden cappuccino, if you ask for a cup of tea from March till the beginning of autumn, especially in the small communities, of course they'll bring it but they'll not approve. I love a cup of tea in summer too, becouse it really can quench thirst when it's hot outside, but sometimes I have to give it up if I'm with friends becouse some very countryside ones get embarassed (at some point one actually got so fed up that she took the courage to confront me and beg me to stop🤣)

Being recognized as a foreigner is not a problem ... But foreigners often visit the most popular places (for example I live in the capital), in the center of Rome a single 0.50cl bottle of water, if bought at the stall it costs about 2 euros. At the supermarket for one euro and something you buy a pack of 6 bottles of 0.50cl. But foreigners prefer to buy bottles from street vendors. Not to mention those who wear socks with sandals. 😱 If you come to Italy sooner or later, avoid socks with sandals, please! I'm an obscene thing ... xD

maaaan i love your videos but some tips that you maybe misunderstand while watching the video: -in Italy barthenders and waiters are all of them so kind and they will never try to boing you only because you wanna have some cheese on a plate, also when the abbination is "prohibited". Yes, actually they will look at you in a strange way because is So So unusual for us, and they'll probalbly ask you if you are sure of what you ordered. Another one thing is eating, in fact this is an important moment in Italy. All of "eaters" will take sit around the table and eat at the same moment, rarely you will see an italian that brings the dish in his bedroom or on the sofa; in other countries sitting around the table is an action that's done only at Christmas day and stuff like that, but here is a normal thing.

The cappuccino thing is bollocks tbh. Like, yeah it's mainly a breakfast thing but you can definitely order it any time and no barista will scold you lmao I would always get a cappuccino after school at around 4pm and never raised any eyebrows

in relation to coffee, "Normale" (Normal) is the opposite of Decaf. The man is Italian, the lady is not (albeit she speaks very god Italian, with a foreign accent). BTW, I am Italian and nowadays I ask for a cappuccino whenever I feel like, irrespective of the time of the day.

The cappuccino one is an exaggeration. It is true that cappuccino is typical of the Italian breakfast and "usually" you drink it at that juncture. However, no bar in Italy does not bring you cappuccino after 2 p.m. and no one is scandalized by that. Instead, it is strictly unacceptable to accompany cappucciono with food such as pasta or pizza, this is considered absolutely deplorable and a symptom of bad taste. The one about cheese on fish is not accurate either. It is true in general but specifically there are excellent Italian dishes with seafood and cheese such as "Pasta pecorino and mussels."

At 8:43 it isn't true, in Italy exist also a salad breckfast, but, it isn't with bacon and eggs but with some salad brioche, some of those empty inside and some with raw ham (for example)... sorry for my English but it's quite a lot that I don't use it (I'm Italian)

There is an entire world about how to speak to waiters and shop assistants. It isn't always clear even for an italian if you should use the informal form of pronouns/verbs (you) or you should use the formal way of speaking (third person). They won't get offended because they are used to both forms, but it is always a little strange if you think about it. So the whole Ciao/Buongiorno/Buon Pomeriggio (good afternoon)/Buona Sera is only the beginning of the problem :-) Speaking about coffee: 99% of bars in Italy have an espresso machine, and probably 80% of the restaurants. Some restaurants don't have the espresso machine, and so if you ask them a coffee they'll tell you that they can give you a coffee made with the Moka (it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moka). It tastes different. I'll add that up to around 10-15 years ago italian didn't normally have an espresso machine at home, so at home they drank coffee made with the Moka. As a sidenote of the coffe world: if you ever come to Trieste, you'll discover that there are many more ways to drink espresso coffee... Just to make an example here in Trieste you can ask for the espresso to be in a coffee cup or in a small glass ("in vetro")...

She’s not Italian, maybe she’s Polish, but the guy sounds like is Italian. And, I really enjoy a cappuccino in the afternoon, I don’t give a damn if my people have this conception. I also heard saying that just ignorant people ask a cappuccino after midday, but they didn’t even know who was the President of the Republic in charge. As in the U.K., there’s a lot of ignorance amongst population. Last thing about cheese on the fish, we use to put Parmesan on top of plaice and it is a classic Italian recipe. Not always true. Certainly we don’t put cheese on top of a spaghetti with seafood.
