What you are witnessing is MAXIMUM THE HORMONE, this is an old song from them that’s been reimagined . The changes in tempo and style is what they do in every song. Usually 4 tempos, 5 or 6 styles, 4 different vocals in each song. They are the BEST

Maximum the Hormone - epic metal crazy band. The drummer Nao is mother of many female metal and rock drummers in Japan. Not literally but as an inspiration (e.g. Tamo of Nemophila, Akane of BAND-MAID and Haruna of Lovebites). This is an old MtH song called Shimi (stain in English) where normally the drummer sings all clean parts. Now she only did sing the last clean part and the four girls in Atarashi Gakko sang the other ones. Atarashi Gakko is a dance and sing quartet that started in school. That's why several of their songs are about school and why they wear school uniforms. They are also fun. They are also VERY athletic. Both bands try to put some meaning into their texts and videos. If you want to look at Atarashi Gakko, my advice is to start with the First Take of Otonablu. It is fun and cute and they present themselves. This song also has a meaning so keep the subtitles on.

Atarashii Gakko is loved by many metal heads. Their energy and attitude (as well as their talent) set them apart from what many consider pop or idol music. Extremely popular worldwide, they have been together for 10 years, and have always done their own choreo and vocals since that time (when they were between 13-15 years old). And MTH are just OGs.

Shimi is an older MTH track from 2007. Atarashii Gakko (The 4 girls in schoolgirl outfits) is a J-Idol group that while it's not a genre I typically follow, they are really good and they fit into this collab incredibly well. MTH is pretty legandary in Japan and very influential. Hanabie started out as a MTH cover band and the drummers from Band-Maid & Nemophila were inspired by MTH's drummer, Nao (She was the last solo singer in the video) that girls could be drummers. MTH loves genre flips on a dime and it works perfectly. The visuals in this MV are phenomenal. Grungy, post apocalyptic, traditional Japanese culture, even some Japanese horror movie elements. Try Hungry Pride fom MTH. Nemophila did a cover of Shimi as well.

Atarashii Gakko are the four young ladies in sailor suits/school uniforms - everyone else is Maximum the Hormone (their drummer is the woman singing with Atarashii Gakko toward the end). Atarashii Gakko no Leaders (to give them their full title - which translates as Leaders of the New School - hence the uniforms) are song and dance unit best described as anti-idol. They do all their own choreography and have been together 10 plus years and are currently on world tour. Their musical styles (although they don't play instruments, they do have a say in composition and the lyrics) are extremely broad and their songs often have a social message without being preachy. From jazz to rock to hip-hop to electro-dance (if that's such a thing), if they could be harnessed they could power the planet - so much energy, so much personality, and goofballs everyone of them (Suzuka with glasses, Mizyu with twin pony tails, Kanon with the long hair, Rin with the undercut and rapping in this video). Despite seeming to be a 'pop/idol' group they have a huge following in the rock and metal community which is as much to do with their attitude as anything else. Maximum the Hormone are one of a kind. Basically metal, they are a thing unto themselves, have neem around for twenty or so years, and have inspired many of today's rock and metal musicians in Japan. Their songs are quirky and they follow their own rules, yet they always produce quality music. I don't know the background but AG and MtH have admired each other for a while. This collaboration has to be one of the best I've ever seen. And you now have two more rabbit holes to disappear into.

And the rabbit hole goes on. :P I started with Jinjer.....Hanabie opened for Jinjer and I got completely hooked on them. Read somewhere that Yukina and Matsuri started listening to Maximum the Hormone and was (part of? I never read that far.) their influence to start the band. I gave MTH a listen....happened to be this song. Then I heard that incredible voice that Suzuka has, and I've spent the last week and a half lost in the Atarashii Gakko! rabbit hole. I have been steadily listening to heavier music, but AG is a great detour. The energy these girls have, the choreography, their amazing voices. I don't understand a word of Japanese, but the flow it has in their lyrics..... To top it all, Suzuka is such a wonderful clown in their performances. Not sure how many artists have done it, but I haven't seen one that goes to the back of the venue and either crowd surfs or rides someones shoulders back to the stage. :)

Dude, can so relate to this!! Started with Jinjer a little over 4 years ago, within maybe 2 months that somehow led to BAND-MAID... and the rest is history!! Still deep down the Japanese rabbit hole, and absolutely loving it!!
@Matt_Pottinger2 ай бұрын
Might be a long shot....but give Atarashii Gakko! a listen if you have never heard them. Not metal (but they head bang so well in MTH's Shimi video) but the play a wide range of styles. Almost no two songs sound the same style. Bit of dance, electronic, jazz, rap, rock......something I think I'm finding more common in the younger bands, more ready to bend genres and really experiment with music. I never would have seen myself listening to what is technically a J-pop band, but then again it wasn't long ago I would say I listen to plenty of metal but drew the line at the growls and screams. And then.....Jinjer.....What the hell happened there?! :P

MTH are the metal band and they are very influential in Japan, but I'll let the MTH fans go into more detail. This is a collaboration across styles and also across generations as MTH have been around for a long time and Atarashii Gakko are far younger. Atarashii Gakko are the four women in the school/sailor uniforms. Their name means "New School" and they are a song and dance group who are becoming quite popular. AG! formed back in 2015 and are managed by Asobisystem and 88Rising. Mizyu (two hair bunches and shown "playing" the shamisen) had already worked with Asobisystem as a backup dancer with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Suzuka, Kanon and Rin joined her. Mizyu is three years older than the others and so was sometimes called the leader by journalists, and the others still look to her in some circumstances, but Suzuka's extrovert personality and strong voice make her the obvious front woman - she's the tallest and has the first solo in the video. Still, AG! are always quick to say that they have no leader. They are all trained dancers and do all of the choreography themselves and work with various producers on the songs including H ZettM, Money Mark and Yonkey. Their artistic input sets them apart from most J-pop and K-pop idol type groups and their stage shows are performed with a unique joy and flair. They set out to subvert many of the conventions of idol groups so they are often described as alternative idol or idol adjacent. They just released a new album called "AG! Calling" and are on the second half of their first World Tour. AG!'s music is all over the place, but their style is always entertaining and fun and for an intro to them have a look for "Atarashi Gakko, Otona Blue, The First Take". Make sure you turn on the English subtitles. The music is not metal, but the performance can be appreciated by anyone.

MTH = Maximum The Hormone. MTH are the band. Started in 1997. Their drummer inspired Band Maid's drummer Akane and Nemophila's drummer Tamu. Hanabie begun as a cover band of MTH and MTH heavily inspired their style. AG = Atarashii Gakko Atarashii Gakko are a great and very different J-pop group who begun as friend's in school. Despite them not making metal songs themselves, their general attitude, dance style, lyrics, energy etc means it's not uncommon to see comments on their videos saying "I am a metalhead and I don't know why but I love these guys!" So AG whilst not metal musicians, are metal as f**k in spirit. Hence this collab made sense. MTH are unfortunately notorious for strikes so tread with caution if reacting to them. MTH's drummer, Nao, was also the woman singing behind Atarashii Gakko in the final clean verse at the end. MTH are kinda Japanese metal royalty.

Maximum the Hormone are FAMOUS for including about 5 different metal, rock or just general song genres in one song. Haha. I recommend you listening and reacting to their "予襲復讐" or "Yoku Fukushu" song (video starts off by the shilouette of a girl biking to soft female vocals) Its what I think one of their best songs but also best representation of the band. They first got famous in 2007 when they made the song for the 2nd opening of the then megahit anime "Death Note". They even made the second ending theme song for the show, which was equally as popular and both songs are still nr. 1 and nr. 4 of their most listened songs on their spotify to this day. The second song is called "Zetsubou Billy" which translates to "Despair Billy". In the same album they have their nr. 2 most popular song ever "ChuChu Lovely MuniMuni MuraMura PrinPrin Boron Nururu ReroRero" and yes that is the official title. This band is insane and crazy. But in the good way. Please react to more of their songs!

Such a great song and video! As you probably have gathered from the comments, Maximum The Hormone precedes all the japanese bands you have listened to so far. They precede BabyMetal (who is the oldest) by more than a decade. They have been a great influence for many of them, especially Hanabie. Atarashii Gakkou is a strange bird in Japanese music. They are an idol band, but have had little commercial baking, actually being without a record label for several years after having been dropped by their original label. I think they may be the closest the idol genre has to a proper garage band. You should actually check them out, not for their music but for their stunning visual expression. Comments you have made in previous videos, and your skill at lighting and editing has led me to believe you may have interests in that direction. Surviving as a band for years by publishing on social media platforms, they are a propper DIY band when it comes to their videos, and the skills they have acquired shine though in their videos. Here are a couple (For this band make sure you avoid the choreography videos, unless you want to react to the choreography. Japanese groups don't pay a lot of attention to the genre. Genre mashups are common. In America, if Metallica and Taylor Swift did a collab, I imagine both fandoms would throw a tantrum. In Japan, there are no such barriers.
