Spot on. Britain's military has been through some of the most horrendous battles, as well as defence cuts in later generations. They are often being misled as we'd both know, by their Kings and Parliament overall. There are so many stories in 18th century and 19th century British military history, which get crudely kicked under the carpet because the honouring of the soldiers of those generations is for disgraceful 'reasons', gaslit and encouraged _against_ unfairly. It leaves a bad taste in people's mouths (leftist people) to bring up the golden eras of British Imperial history. British soldiers were fighting like lions, even if sometimes led by donkeys, long before _that_ phrase became popular (by the First World War; apparently, it was coined by the Germans, not the British; German soldiers credited the British for being ferocious in battle but often being badly let down by their own commanders, which they regularly were) However, the Blackadder Goes Forth style lie that the British generals were all actual psychopaths like Melchitt, has been de facto accepted by midwits the nation and world over, because of the power of social proofing via comedy. The likes of lefties like Rowan Atkinson and that horrible Stephen Fry can lie and pretend that it's 'just a joke', but it's entirely a time capsule of 1980's era, reactionary mindsets about the First World War. By then, they'd had a couple of generations to mull over the Great War and a lot of people were raised on the postmodern anti-Imperial narratives that were satirised by comedians just like Atkinson and Fry. I grew up watching the Blackadder series laughing along like pretty much everyone else. But when you get older and realise the sleight of hand at work, then you start to see just how messed up that paradigmatic mythos was. Yes, there were indeed some nutters in charge. However, everyone was learning in that war. Nobody was really ready for it. I'd like to see how socialists born in the 1950's and 1960's who were so vocally anti-war in the 1970's and 1980's, would handle the battlefields of the First World War. As a child of the 1990's, all you'd see is this tidal wave of hatred for the generals and the conditions which allowed for such things to happen. And yes, indeed, it's sad. It did ultimately amount to a stick measuring contest (ahem) between aristocrats and monarchs in Europe, dragging in many others. It was ultimately a nightmare for worse than nothing say for military innovation - paid for with millions of lives and billions of units of currency. It was staggeringly wasteful and nightmarish. And for all that, the generals on the ground were still trying their best very often. The misconception, exemplified by the likes of Blackadder Goes Forth, is that the whole thing was a mess - that there was no rhyme or reason at all. Things get worse when looking back to the 18th century, with the valour and battlefield feats of the British infantry of the line and foot guards, now seemingly lost to time and abjectly ignored at all costs by the education system. What of the Minden Roses or the Annus Mirabilis of 1759? What of the capture of Havana and the conquest and occupation of Manila? What of half-a-hundred naval battles worth remembering, now hiding in the shadow of Trafalgar and Jutland? There are so many things that the government and education system don't want to let people know. It's sad.

Hate to be that guy, but the Brit Guards repulsed the 3rd and 4th Chasseur Regiments of the Middle Guard initially, then the Grenadier Battalions (who wore Belgic shakos with a large red plume) of the 3rd and 4th Regiments of the Middle Guard who were supporting them. The two Old Guard Battalions that took part made light work of it until they were confronted by the 52nd Foot who poured volleys at point blank range into the flanks of Old Guard and then 1000 strong, charged them with the bayonet. If anybody should be wearing the bearskin it should be the Green Jackets!
