British MK6 and MK6A Helmets

History and a review of sorts of the British MK6 and MK6A helmets, the MK6 saw service from 1985 until 2009, the MK6A was the vastly improved version of the MK6 introduced in 2005 that had a kevlar filler rather than ballistic nylon giving far better ballistic protection.
In 2009 the MK7 helmet replaced both versions of the MK6 in service.

now my uncle served in the army in afghanistan and he went to helmand province and during one of his patrols with the marines he was shot in the head with a unknown person with a 45. ACP pistol but he was wearing the MK6A and that little peace of gear saved his life he even has the helmet somewhere in his attic as a memorial on how he was one lucky bastard as my father said to him

Yeah trying to use a SUSAT wearing a mark 6 with a bergan was absolutely hell lying down, I am honestly surprised how stuff like that makes it past testing and is issued

Well the Scott GSR for example actually failed testing but was bought anyway as it was cheap.

The US PASGT helmet had a curve at the back to reduce this "turtle backing". I never understood why Brit helmets didn't.

Always thought the "flat in the front" shape of the MK6 looked odd, probably uncomfortable too, but also instantly recognizable

The riot visor comes separately with a tool to pop the clips out of the MK6 and MK6A helmets and do up 2 screws. It then comes with 2 screws, the mounting plates, nylon washers, and a rather poorly made rear neck protector you just velcro to the inside of the helmet (some disassembly required with the chin strap)

when body armour became mandatory the helmet tipping issue really became a problem, there was talk of redesigning the body armour to put a neck grove in the back (i dont know it happened or not) which would reduce contact between helmet and armour. A side note for you on protection provided (or not) by the mk6, the muzzle flash of a blank round, fired through a BFA was capable of putting a hole straight threw it.

I got a few of these 6 helmets. Wobble around all over the place. The Ballistic nylon material has an indefinite shelf life and doesn't need replacing like Kevlar. The only good point despite being useless. Good for caving though. Great vid mate.

Yeah indefinite shelf life on something useless, at least you can use it as you said as a hard hat.

I can confirm the Mk6A helmet is made of kevlar / aramid. I was originally issued a Mk6 (ballistic nylon) and currently own a well-worn Mk6a as a civillian. When the Mk6 is scratched or chipped, you would see that the colour of the material remains green with a uniform material structure (almost as though it is injection moulded). When the Mk6A is scratched or chipped you will see a gold or yellowish colour under the matte black paint, with sandwhich layering visible at the rim, a tell-tale sign of kevlar / aramid material.

I mean if you wanted one they go for a “harsh” bargain because it’s brass which makes it rust and why you see them with grey covers on them to make them not glare from the sun or anything else. Although your right about them being “bad” when they could technically help in the trenches of WW1 as a decoy by snipers. So they do have somewhat help in a way.

I am 2 years late. But the balistic nylon vest(forgotten weapons) made by s&w could stop 38 special (weaker then a 9mm if i remember correctly). The steel plates could stop a 30 carbine. All very common in the 1950s

Yeah I've got a desert and two MTP covers if I remember correctly, they ended up using the MK6 covers in large for the MK7 helmets as they fit fine.

i believe i have a 6a as well, however i used it as a suitable replica colonial marine helmet for lack of a vietnam m1 helmet. the shape was largely similar and i was on a budget but it painted well

HSAT Mk2 (steel) and composite Para helmets (Paras) and the steel GS Mk4 for everyone else - although the navy used steel RAC helmets (and likely a few marines, too). I believe most of the steel GS helmets would have had the Mk5 liner. Any prototype Mk6s were probably being trialled there by SAS or perhaps marines.

Same here, can't really distinguish between the two. Is the Kevlar always black? I have a green one, but not that smooth shiny surface like the mk6. Pity that I can't insert a picture here...

@@AttilaPap13 Yeah I've noticed that to. Some Mk6's are smooth like the one in the video, others are rougher. It's possible that there might be some green mk6a's floating around, but with the old liner
