The British Museum is a museum in London dedicated to human history and culture.

Imperial War Museum; • "Imperial War Museum"....
National Maritime Museum; • "National Maritime Mus...
Royal Observatory, Greenwich; • "Royal Observatory", p...
Its permanent collection, numbering some eight million works, is amongst the largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.
The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House in Bloomsbury, on the site of the current museum building. Its expansion over the following two and a half centuries was largely a result of an expanding British colonial footprint and has resulted in the creation of several branch institutions, the first being the British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington in 1887. Some objects in the collection, most notably the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon, are the objects of intense controversy and of calls for restitution to their countries of origin.

Look what happened to all that ancient treasurers Greek statutes etc, at there main museum in Iran or Iraq, they got looted as soon as there was a sign of trouble and they knew the police wouldn't have time to deal with it, all ancient statues were stolen the rest were smashed, Most of the treasure in Egypt thats found by the locals is always sold on the black market, and are never seen again, is that the better way?

How about "liberated" or "secured" ....or even "discovered" after centuries of neglect or even cultural repudiation by later generations of locals. The Rosetta Stone, for instance. Should we "hand it back" to the Arab "Egyptians"; even though it had lain there (as a piece of building rubble in one of their palaces), unnoticed? Did the Arabs even care about trying to decipher the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, through the CENTURIES in which they ruled Egypt? How long did it take the French, after they arrived in 1798, to find that important artifact? A few weeks?

When I went here I was confused why there was so much stuff from around the world if it's called the British Museum. I thought it would be a museum about British history, and then an Indian man told me a lot of it was taken from kingdoms in India and Africa, then it all made sense to me
@PitchBlackTales
@PitchBlackTales 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of it was bought, sold and traded with the British. Some of it discovered in archaeological digs. It is rare something was just 'looted' and stolen. For example, a lot of the Greek artefacts were sold to Britain by the Ottoman Empire in the 1800s, to avoid their destruction. Today Greece says they are 'stolen', because they were ruled by the Ottomans at the time. The Indian Koh-i-Noor Diamond which is a popular item Indians claimed was stolen/looted, was investigated and in 2016 the Indian supreme ruled court that the Koh-i-Noor had been given freely to the British in the mid-19th century by Maharajah Ranjit Singh, and was “neither stolen nor forcibly taken by British rulers. There are many items around the world owned by collectors of different origins to the items. The British Museum just have the largest collection since it fascinated them long before most countries started opening museums themselves. Many items have been saved from destruction.

@MandyJMaddison
@MandyJMaddison 5 жыл бұрын
Kausik J, You have just repeated the stupid error made by nearly every article and You Tube video from India about the Kohinoor Diamond. They ALL, as in EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE, show the Queen wearing the Imperial State Crown. That crown DOES have a large diamond, bigger, in fact, than the Kohinoor. It is Cullinan II, the Second Star of Africa. The Kohinoor Diamond is not in the crown that they keep showing. It is in the crown of the Queen Consort. If you find a balcony photo f the Coronation of George VI, then His Queen is wearing the Kohinoor Diamond. You can see in this photo that the diamond that is in the Imperial State Crown is much bigger, and rectangular, nor round. The Queen has never worn the crown that holds the Kohinoor Diamond. It made its last public appearance in 2001 when it rested on top of the casket of the Queen Mother, at her funeral. The next person to wear it will be either Camilla or Catherine, on the day of their husband's Coronation. Saying that they could not afford to buy a diamond for the Queen's crown is really rather ridiculous. They COULD, but usually don't. Diamonds like the Kohinoor are given to them. The reason that the Kohinoor was given to Victoria was because by that date she held the title "Empress of India", so in a sense, the Diamond was still in the hands of the Indian ruler. It could have been retrned at the time of the partition, but then it would simply have become another bone of contention between India and Pakistan who both claim it. So does Iran, and so does Russia. It is probably better if it remains at the Tower of London, where Indians, Pakistanis, Iranians and Russians can all come and look at it.
@MandyJMaddison

Shivam Sharma, can I suggest that you look up recent lootings of treasures from India's temples. It goes on all the time, and it is Indians who are responsible for it. Several museums have recently returned treasures which they bought, fully certified, at auction, in recent years. The theft is an ongoing problem as more and more ruthless people see religious artefacts as a source of money. Dealing with this problem is far more significant than complaining about artefacts that the British Museum acquired during the 19th century. With the Museum objects, there whereabouts is known, they are maintained and displayed, free of charge, to the World. This is a very different problem to the destruction of objcts for thei metal and jewels, and he disappearance of artworks into private collections where they may not be seen for years. www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-13/dancing-shiva-art-gallery-of-south-australia-stolen-from-india/10233036

It's difficult to imagine a concept of history as limited as this. (It almost sounds like a vacuous thing that Donald Trump would say.) Beholding the greatest material objects of different regions throughout history is not looking at mere physical objects, but the intellects, religion and even science of the time in question. The paucity of curiosity displayed by your words is tragedy enough. Perhaps you're very young. Perhaps you were raised to appreciate very little in the world in general. Yet to only see pitiable beggars when you gaze upon those interested in history is an opposite view of what is really in the reflecting glass. Here's hoping you may be brought to appreciate what was grand, what was awful, what was brilliant from times past, for without the measuring stick of history, it's impossible to tell where we're even going.

Elgin removed them, in spite of the opposition of the Greeks, promising to return them when Greece would have become a safer place...but instead few years later he sold them to the British museum. Given that the removal was authorized by the Turks, the British museum considers the purchase legitimate. It was a theft, the museum was always aware of it. Elgin was in bad faith. The marble of the Parthenon should be returned to Greece.

Except for the knowledge understanding and skill behind finding and researching said exhibits, not to mention the expertise behind maintaining them in an environment of minimum degredation and/or reversing any damage already sustained. Then again. there's always the accumulated value of the invested running expenses of the storage environment along with the availability of expert assistance to any visiting researchers who need access in order to increase humanity's understanding. Abstract scientific knowledge mostly lacks an ownership label, in fact the only location with any relevance is the destination of the bills for the overheads involved.

Artefacts kept in complete safety(uk not invaded for 1000 years) carefully preserved (not left laying around deteriorating) and displayed completely free for the world curtesy of the British tax payer (unlike the high prices of most museums who prevent those without the funds from visiting). To deal with the negative comments about items being “stolen”, it is a fact that without them being recovered and preserved by the British the majority of them wouldn’t exist now and be lost to the world.

@@piusx8317 It doesn't. All I'm saying is that at least they've been preserved and kept for public viewing. For example, I live in Australia, so far away from England, but I finally went to England a few years ago, just to visit the British museum for the first time. Many people from all over the world are able to see these treasures and place value on the cultures of peoples other than their own, and hopefully realise that all 'great' nations and civilisations have their time, and that inevitably things change; a silent lesson in humility and one which warns against excessive nationalism.
