Always had the blokes, who never left the ops wagon putting them on to stand outside for a brew and a smoke... Blokes stagging on in winter still in the PVC clammy " waterproofs" and 34 other layers, never saw one.. Must have being cold sat on radio stag in back of a wagon. I'm the same as previous comment. Had one on my back for about two hours before I got told to hand it in, Sennelager 1988.

I had my mom get me a green one when she visited the UK in the early 90`s...kept me toasty and warm when I was a teen out running around at night during the cold Johannesburg winters...I wore it until it practically wore out...ended up chucking it out in about 2005...

Always wanted one of these when in, finally got one .SSM said not issue for everyone, hand back into stores.Guess who was using it a week later.Very good piece of kit,in cold dry weather when static.Heavy to carry on Bergen, but great on stag, 4am in German winter.Roll pin belt on webbing essential as it's bulky.

Same thing happened here in Australia when the AMCU jacket first appeared, CSMs making soldiers take them off because it wasn't issued to everyone yet.

Saw one once while in a hard-core Bosnian winter , looked warm while I peered out of an op on Mt igman in standard dpm ho hum .

Great bit of kit for those long winter exercises in Germany. Mine replaced my OD tailored parka which I really liked. I did roll it into the 'poachers' pocket when stowed in my bergan. I guess most people here will know but the big buttons were because if it was that cold to be wearing a parka then you'd most likely to be also wearing gloves.

Thank you for your very informative video. I learned a lot about the features to look for. It helped me find a very good 170/112 arctic smock and its matching sized liner. I appreciate your help. Take care....

I thought these were brilliant. Managed to get issued one in Germany and had it for years. Was later issued one in Bosnia and was smart enough to keep hold of it after the tour. Still was wearing it up until the MTP uniform came out

Issued these in BAOR from 86 to 92 great piece of kit. Used in Germany and Canada kept me warm on many of a stag on cold nights.

IN the late 90's many of these showed up in the US as surplus. Many of the shells, and not a one of the liners, and almost all them were the much larger sizes, 180/100, 190/100, 190/120. HUGE sizes, not a single liner available. People were using them to make ghillie suits and whatnot. I desperately wanted one, but without a liner they were all but useless. I wear a 190/120 but these were HUGE, without the liner they came down well past my knees.

You could try Silvermans of London England on line. At Silvermans Military. They did have liners for these parkas on sale

i remember wearing mine for half the year when stationed at RAF Gutersloh. those winters were chilly and if you were working outside they were life saver. not great by today's standards but ok for 1983 era..

A favourite piece in my DPM collection is a pre-metric sized parka that’s subtly different from the later, metric sized issue item. My assumption is that it’s perhaps a trial garment as it’s also made to a much higher standard than the type typically encountered. Secondly, I also have a sealed pattern, metric sized example with a very low-numbered CT4 contract date stashed in a box somewhere. These actually are rather an interesting bit of kit and were pretty much ignored by collectors until very recently. Fond memories of my dad bringing home a slightly damaged one for me to kick about in when we lived at BFPO 36.

Hi Dan, may I ask what details are recorded in regards to the sealed pattern version? Is there a date for example? Also have you checked HMVF for an example of another early version Parka - and what are the differences in regards yours? Sorry for all the questions but thanks for your comment and any info in advance buddy.

Issued one in 1983 for an exercise in West Germany, used it after my Army service mainly for walking the dog. Quilted liner top and bottoms (aka the Chairman Mao suit 😅) were lost or chucked out a many years ago, but the parka itself only got so worn out as to be u/s a couple of years ago 🤔

I always thought the upper extension on the pockets under the flap was to help reduce chance of smaller items falling out of the top of the pockets ? At least the huge bellows pockets on the first jackets I was issued in 1988 stuff could fall out the top when I was bending over etc and so I learnt to be careful how I placed items in them. I noticed of pockets with the extra material extending up this help prevent things falling when ( when button fastened of course). But then I suppose if it helps prevent things falling out then it helps prevents things getting in !

cool parka (i own 4 of them, including a waxed one) ... back in the 90s i actually used a tailored (shortened) one of these as my main field jacket for a couple of years, until i was encouraged (forced) to use the new issue CS95 Ripstop Jacket which was being issued.

We had these as loan items during my first Falklands tour in 95/96 and I thought they were pretty useless pieces of kit. During my tour at RAF Saxa Vord we actually got loaned some ancient parkas that were like something from Scott of the Antarctic; but still far better than the service issue one described here. By the time of my second and third tours of the Falklands they’d been relegated to history and good riddance.

Good video and presentation, thank you. How is the parka reviewed here different (if at all) from the "windproof" outer garment that's been a staple of British military issue since the 1950's or so, if at all?

Used one on a freezing winter MedMan in Canada 1989. That was the only time we were issued with them. Not bad, but no good past minus 12.

As mechanised infantry in Germany in 1980-85 we were still being issued the green parka, right up to the day after Argentina invaded the Falklands. We were all called in on the weekend to hand in our parkas, apparently they were going to be used for POW's but went down with the Atlantic Conveyer. True or not we never saw a parka again! 🤣

Nice coat & good you have the correct liner there. Parka material there seems to match up with the introduction of the 84 pattern smock no (or do 68 patt smocks have this too with the white underside)? My Parka is marked CT4B/1643 "James Smith & Co. (Derby) and from about the same time frame as yours. Jealous as I only have the earlier liner that has no fix points to the parka. It's marked as "Liner, Extreme Cold Weather", CT4B2/1789 Bernard Uniforms LTD.

I was at the back of the queue when these were issued for the Falklands war, and I ended up with one that was at least 3 times my size. I had the p**s taken out of me for ages, until we got to 'Two Sisters'. We spent most of the night without our kit, freezing our nuts off; but I was alright because I just pulled it down over my legs, it was that big. They stopped taking the p**s for some reason??

Why is the army obsessed with Velcro? Eskimos don’t need a long parka so why should the army?
