The US is so big and diverse that pronouncing some of these is even a challenge for americans. The only somewhat helpful thing is knowing what state it is in, because if a city name in the southwest looks spanish, it probably is. If a name just straight up looks native american in the midwest, it probably is.
@Deladus
@Deladus 6 жыл бұрын
This is very true. Even towns/cities with the same spelling may be pronounced different based on where the place is. Some of it, I believe, has to do with what the primary makeup of the original settlers were. Some of it has to do with the differing accents, and some might just have to do with wanting to be different. Some examples I can think of are Lancaster, PA vs Lancaster, CA. PA is more LANK-iss-ter where CA is more LAN-kast-er. Locals in Bethlehem, PA often pronounce it BETH-lum.

Bingo. To be English, you embrace (or at least confirm to cultural expectations on some level) the traits that are quintessentially English, regardless of race. To be American, you embrace freedom, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, etc. freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, etc. This obviously influences how we talk and the vocabularies and accents used.

Raleigh NC is named after Sir Walter Raleigh. He grew up in a farmhouse near the village of East Budleigh in Devon. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1585 and was the Captain of the Queen's Guard. He journeyed to America, landing and establishing a colony on Roanoke Island, ( which is in NC now ) and named it Virginia, which he named after the "virgin" Queen. Elizabeth was in love with him, but he courted and married her maid of honor, and Elizabeth had him locked in the Tower of London. After his release, he tried to regain favor with the Queen by military raids and explorations, but didn't, and her successor, King James I had him executed on the original charge of treason in 1618.

Try Issaquah, Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Tulalip, Aeneas, Ephrata, Camano, Tshletshy, Chehalis, Enumclaw, Poulsbo, Skamokawa, Keechelus, Kachess, Steilacoom. Also, here are a few fun ones from.other states I have lived in... New York : Schenectady, Canandaigua, Chautauqua, Coxsackie, Oneonta, Skaneateles, Onondaga, Poughkeepsie, Rensselaer, Unadilla. Florida: Okeechobee & Withlacoochee, Wewahitchka. New Jersey: Manalapan, Secaucus, Pequannock, Wanaque.

Yeah, a lot of states have a wide mix of place names from Spanish, French, Native American, and English, with some Germanic ones thrown in for flavor. But of course we've butchered all of them into American words now, so they don't always resemble what they started with. Michigan has a lot from the French because of Canadian trade routes and stuff. A lot of place names in the American southwest (Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, etc.) are Spanish since this region was originally settled by the Spaniards and was part of Mexico until American settlers revolted in the mid-1800's. Many are difficult to pronounce correctly if you don't have at least of little working knowledge of the Spanish language. Also, all throughout the US (and Canada), many place names are taken from the many Native American languages of the indigenous people who lived in North America before the European settlers arrived. Some examples are Apalachicola, Florida; Waukegan, Illinois; Oneida, New York; Swannanoa, North Carolina; Tillamook County, Oregon. There are hundreds if not thousands of Native American place names in the US and most are very difficult to pronounce until someone helps you out with a quick lesson. To add even more confusion, some don't have an exact English translation/pronunciation and can be pronounced multiple ways.

Many odd sounding names of towns, states, etc, in the US come from the Native American language. The names usually come from the tribe that was local to that area. That's why names in one area may sound differently than names in another area. The different tribes had their own languages, so you may notice similarities of these odd sounding names within a certain area, but may be very different sounding than the odd sounding names within another area. Oklahoma seems to be the exception to this rule to a degree since it was formerly "Indian Territory". Starting in the 1830s, censuses were taken of the native populations and they began to be relocated to Indian Territory (current-day Oklahoma). The tribes were each given a certain area of land within the territory. Unfortunately, disputes arose and occasionally caused conflict, such as the "Claremore Wars" that erupted between the Cherokee and the Osage because a small strip of land was unintentionally promised to both tribes. The territory began to be opened to White settlement around 1900, and became the state of Oklahoma in 1907. The tribes do still have special tribal lands, though very tiny pieces compared to what they originally had. When Oklahoma was opened to White settlement, many of the tribes made treaties with the whites and sold off much of their lands to them. Oklahoma is a real melting pot of civilizations, both European and native American, which is why you see so many towns named after various native American tribes in close proximity.

The pacific northwest area of the United States has a lot of Native American names, and as a result of being close to Mexico, spanish names. California has a large majority of spanish names. Even my town has a native tribe, and all the streets are named after trees. ^^
@sack36
@sack36 6 жыл бұрын
Had to laugh at the "result of being close to Mexico" comment. The distance from, say, Portland to Tijuana is 1,100 miles. That's more than from London to Florence, Italy! Twice as far as to Berlin, Germany! Almost four times further than from London to Paris! Now let's talk about age. America has been around 900-1200 years according to varying sources but what would become the US has only been on the continent 500 years. England would say that is a very short time. The people that would become England were there nearly a 1200 years ago. Italy is only 200 years old as the country of Italy, but it has been populated 5,000 years. Greece and Egypt are both much older. So can you see how funny it's going to sound to our two continental junkies that you call the PNW close to Mexico? Tee Hee Hee!
@aarne1734
@aarne1734 6 жыл бұрын
California’s city names aren’t because of our proximity, it’s because Spaniards settled along our coast and that the entire state used to belong to Mexico before being taken by the U.S. after the Mexican American war in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It became a state in 1850.
@sack36
@sack36 6 жыл бұрын
The commenter was talking about the Pacific Northwest though. That's basically Washington and Oregon. They weren't part of the mission trail and were never owned by Mexico. Also, the time that Mexico owned California was relatively short and not at all during the time that Washington and oregon was being settled. To tell you the truth, I don't see many Mexican names in this area. There are native names galore because of the number of native American tribes here, but nothing Spanish. I don't know where she was referring to.

Yeah, Raleigh was one where I thought they'd have an easier time since it's named for a famous Englishman (a friend of Queen Elizabeth I who was prominent for a while during her reign). Though they did at least identify that it was English-sounding. ...and now I'm wondering whether Sir Walter Raleigh is more famous in the UK or the US. He probably did more in British history, but his contribution to American history (founding the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke) is one of those memorable facts that may well make him better known in America.

Most of the towns you selected have Native American origins and are difficult to pronounce, even for Americans. What makes American pronunciation of towns even more difficult is that "the proper pronunciation of any town is the way the natives pronounce it." That often means two towns with the same name can be properly pronounced two different ways.

As long as you don’t say Boy-zee for Boise and always say Boy-see then you’re golden! The people from Boise know whether or not you’re from there by how you pronounce the city name! Also Boise is from the French word les bois meaning the woods because when Lewis and Clark came out that way they marveled at all the trees compared to the desert they were used to seeing!

Joel actually guessed it. The reason we have a lot of weird pronunciation especially some states like Washington or mine, Pennsylvania is because of the Native American places. Like for instance, the Schuylkill River runs through Philadelphia. Pronounced school-kul not school-call or kill.

When you said Raleigh in your American accent, you were spot on! 😎 Most of these are American Indian names, and most Americans have trouble with them until they’re told exactly how to say them. 😉And, Raleigh, NC, is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, so you were correct that Raleigh is actually English! You should look up more American Indian names from the Midwest. Those are fun! For example, a popular tourist destination in Michigan is Mackinac Island. Mackinac is pronounced Mack-i-naw.

(2:00) Hi, native Wisconsinite here. The "E" is pronounced more like the soft "E" sound in "fetch," or alternatively like the "I" sound in "wish." "Eh" or "ih," (I suppose depending on what part of the state you live in, as there can be a little bit of a northwest vs. southeast divide sometimes). "Walk-eh-shaw" or "Walk-ish-shaw." I'm a native Floridian and there are some places in Florida that are tricky to pronounce even though, when you know how to pronounce them, they "sound the way they're written." Okeechobee seems pretty easy, but you have to get the accents in the right place. Then there is Islamorada. Try showing the word to people who live outside of Florida (or who are new to the Sunshine State) and I suspect you'll get some very funny mispronunciations.
