The first time I took my 2 sons to Skye was 1988, and we went back quite a few times, 37s, and the sleepers, all bring back those happy days of riding around, this area, we dd Wick, along with Fort William as well a few times over a few years...proper trains, proper railway memories..thanks for posting. I also remember the sleeper being a proper rake of 7/8 sleeping cars, lounge, and seating, coaches and a few vans..15 in total in this vid, now all 3 sleeper services are 16 coaches in total, for 3 trains..and you can`t even get your head out anymore to enjoy fully, the stunning scenery, and fresh Highland air...This was when the railways were more interesting, locos the mainstay, but I suppose from an operating point of view, the DMU does away with a wilth shunting, and a shunter.

All i can say is that we lived it , we were there and we loved every minute of it. Absolutely brilliant.Proper trains, proper sounds and fabulous scenery. At least we've still got the 37s around albeit not on these lines. Great video.

I preferred the trains, railways, and stations as they were in 1988 to the way they are now, especially the way Thurso station has lost such a lot of it's old tracks and buildings.

Fantastic. I used to go up on the sleeper around this time. What brilliant memories. Railways are pretty boring today after this. Thanks 😊

That's the way I did it as well, and I totally agree! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Absolutely brilliant. The Euston sleeper departing at about 33:30 onwards is load 15 - I believe that was the most arduous duty for a single Class 47 in the class’s history, particularly when you consider the ETH load of 8 sleeping cars, and the 15 miles of 1:60 to Slochd starts just outside the station!

...wonderful video! Thank you for sharing, loco hauled is what they call a proper train all set in the beautiful bonnie Scottish highlands 👌

How absolutely fabulous was this!! I was born and brough up near Thurso and took the train to Inverness and beyond hundreds of times...sleeper was very popular as was motor-rail to Dover, I think.. I am sure there is film of the Inverness Dept Open Day in this...I was there too!!! Need to dig out my pictures. The 37 and 47s were real workhorses!!! A train should be a locomotive with coaches behind....DMU's are garbage in comparison. Thank you for sharing

Pure magic from beginning to end! Superb footage, beautifully captured. Great sounds as well! Interesting coverage of the inside of Inverness Depot. And well done for thinking of filming the Lochalsh - Kyleakin ferry. Thank you for sharing your video with us Roy. I enjoyed every moment of it. Keep the BR stuff coming! Cheers. Vivian.

Good grief, now I feel old!! The Skye ferry, proper trains with the engines at the front, Capri's in the car park. And the worst thing is, it still seems like yesterday. Great video (all filmed on something the size of a briefcase, no doubt!), thanks for uploading.

Thurso station used to be so busy on cattle market days with livestock traffic. Very sad that that has all long gone and only 2 coach dmus now. And a little Bit of nuclear freight from Georgemas

Best footage I’ve seen on YT, I’m struggling to cope with the content to be honest. Thank heavens people like you took the time to video it whilst others just bashed it.

Ooh, a Western Scottish Volvo B58/Duple with the forward slanting windows! And what a wonderful sticker and filler bedecked Reliant Regal Estate (NOT a Robin!) at 15:32! 😀 And a rousing departure by 37046 with bursts of smoke as he piles on the coal!

The Western Scottish coach had the fleet number LV 150 indicating it was from the London pool. On this occasion it was an express service to Glasgow

A towbar on that Regal ! What was he hoping to tow, as it would barely pull the skin off a rice pudding !

Have been there in the 70th, not class 37 at that time, older? engines 1D-D1 (what class?). At that time BR shipping old stuff up north. Better weather sunshine at that time :) Love class 37 - nickname tractor, lovely engine sound.

Why the British Railways looked so vintage and old while compared to their German or French or even Polish counterparts during the same time? I mean not only trains but the infrastructure or the station layouts etc.
