"Terroni" means Man of the earth, that means man that work the earth, that means farmer. It was originally used by people from Milano to label people that came from outside Milano, the big city. Because at that time if you came from outside Milan, you were not a merchant, a craftsman, etc., but you were a farmer. And it was referred to anyone who was not from Milan, whether he came from the North or the South. In the 50s and 60s there was a strong emigration from the south and the terrone term was associated with being from the South. However it is a term that is used above all in the North in a derogatory way, and should be avoided. Let's say it's quite similar to the bad word starting with N.
@marcellointraina48873 жыл бұрын
Aye, I'm from Bergamo, and unfortunately when I was younger (I'm 29) I saw many signs with written above "We don't rent to terroni" ("Non si affitta ai terroni", in Italian). Personally, I never used this term in a derogatory way, only joking, with my Southerner friends, obviously ironically, and only with people i know that want to play the joke. I don't care Northerners that call "terroni" all the Southerners, insulting them. Italy is plenty of good people, from North to South, without distinction. We're all Italian and stop.
@giancarlobocchetti93923 жыл бұрын
@@marcellointraina4887 i still think that word should be avoided, for the rest I agree with you.
@marcellointraina48873 жыл бұрын
@@giancarlobocchetti9392 I agree, it should be avoided, I didn't want to give the impression I use it uncarefully. Fortunately younger generations like mine or the last one, seem to don't give a damn about this stereotypes, and rarely use this bad term. I have this feeling, personally, although I've not experienced this discrimination first-hand, 'cause I'm Northern. Maybe society is more globalized, and this is projected internally to us, too.
@mariannaciuni87393 жыл бұрын
It's all true but there's something more to add. Terroni was used also becouse souther Italian used grew basilicum plant inside the bidet, not very kwew by them in the early 1900. So Milan people used called them terroni, by the word terra that in Italian means soil.

Organized crime is terrible it affects the whole country, keeps people in poverty and everyone afraid so nobody dares fight back. Speaking from personal experience, it's not fun living in a country with so much organized crime. We are trapped here, with no real freedom to do or have whatever we want.

No hate or something bro, i LOVE your contents, i just need to clirify something. People, mostly americans, tend to think that the mafia is all about money, money and long haired, hot men with giant houses and a lot of sports cars, they think that some hot mafia boss would kidnapp them and make them theyre queen or something, have an amazing and wealthy life and be respected by everyone. WRONG. The mafia is an organization born to protect rich people's territories in the '800 using every way to keep men away from it, killin*, kidn*pping and a lot more. As time went on and on these people formed a group and that group is called mafia. The most known are Cosa Nostra and a couple more. Were people put explosives under politics cars to kill them and MUCH more. Unfortunately, what these little ignorant young girls dont know is that, the only person who get rich is the BOSS, so being in the mafia is NOT cool and doesnt make you automatically rich or something. Even thinking about a "MaFIa" themed wedding or life is stupid and ignorant, because they dont know what people went trough because of the mafia. Some people really have to dicipline themselves. Again im not hating on you bro. Just stating facts and making people in GENERALto understand that mafia is not cool in any way. Thank you for listening ❤

Sicily, in italian is said just like the guy did but he forgot to put an A at the end, it would be like SICILIA Southern people are called "Terroni" because of the TORRONE which is a very exquisite mostly hard dessert. Looks like a little brick made of almonds and chocolate, typically southern italian and eaten during xmas period. About Mafia, it is a very sensitive topic we prefer not to talk about. Mafia is very dangerous and it's better not to mes with them. Italian government has had important losses because of Mafia and several more losses italian people had to come through(?). Also it's very offensive describing south Italy as the Mafia regions, southern people have to deal with them on a daily basis, southern people are very sweet and southern regions have so much to tell, more then just creepy stories.

Mafia has killed a lot of honest people (I suggest you to go check Falcone and Borsellino's story, they're two famous victims of mafia). And please, think about all the bad people who commit crimes to achieve money and power all over the world! In term of this, mafia is everywhere, not only in Sicily. Mafia has changed so much in the last decades, it is not anymore like 'The Godfather' one: I think that mafia acts in the shadow. We live in a peaceful way here in Sicily! "Terroni" comes from Italian name for "land", that is "terra". In short terms, Northeners use "terroni" to design rude, uneducated people who work land. We use this term especially in Lombardy, my region.Typical stereotype of terrone is also lazy people, who don't respect the law. Obviously, it's generally an insult, it's acknowledged as xenophobic insult by our law system. Until some years ago, this term was pretty common, unfortunately, because Notherners thought that they were hard workers, and Southerners not. Obviously is not true, many Southerners went to North seeking jobs, like in FIAT, especially after WWII. But nowadays I've the feeling that this sentiment is less strong than before. Many Southerners families have sons, nephews born in North. They belong to the North like me, and however we're all Italians, neither more nor less. Our variety is our strength !
