It doesn't matter how many kills or what nationality the sniper is.What really matters,is that he/she protects their comrades-in-arms and also protected innocent lives.

You know i normally don't like Americans when they argue about the military between the UK and the US but i have a new found respect to you after reading your comment and all i can say as an Allie is you supply the quantity and we'll supply the quality together we make up the meanest fighting force the world has ever seen. much love, peace out

I am all about inter-service rivalry, keeps things interesting, ya know? But this, this is a little....no, it's a LOT, much. I served as a US Marine from 86-90, dual MOS of 2512 and 8541 (now known as 0317). The Brits have some of the most kick ass training in the world (would have LOVED to have went to their sniper school). Props to those guys. Having said that, we are on the same side guys. Save all this aggression for whoever it is that needs killing today, not each other. Semper Fi.

@jadindahouse (continued) They refer to this as "external ballistics". Factors include, elevation (altitude), temperature, humidity, the actual bullet (ballistic coefficient), wind (at the barrel is usually most critical, but the wind direction and velocity can change several times over long shots), barometric pressure, vertical angles (shooting down or up), muzzle velocity, spin drift, and more! Lots of math that goes into a sniper shot, most of it is figured out prior to entering the field.

@kosse66 Yes - they do. remember their basic is over 30 weeks so they will end up in most season regardless of depending when they start. They are also key troops for defending NATO's Northern flank. As such they do plenty of arctic warfare training in Northern Norway depending on their unit.

@jadindahouse Decent question. Sniper quality ballistics involve several factors. A very accurized weapon (meaning all the operating tolerances are held to exacting standards usually 1-2 thousands of an inch). is an excellent start. Next the ammunition also must be made exactly the same (no sloppy factory standard stuff). These two factors allow for repeatable, (within reason) very accurate shots. Once the bullet leaves the chamber it is affected by (at a minimum) several factors (continued).

im 12 aswell, nearly 13 lol.. im joining army cadets soon and you should too because when you do they ask if you want to join the army after you have finished cadets. if you say yes you will be put on a list with many others. Cadets is like the real army but you do it at the age of 12 to 18.. you get to shoot real rifles, marching, training in the forest with a blank firing sa80 rifle.. and much more.

@leerobbo92 it used to be possible for RM officers to do the Sniper PW3 course, it was usually so they could take up a certain role within the Corps. I don't know of any who got employed as snipers after passing the course though. Thats going back a few years mind. I'm an ex-Booty sniper

@jadindahouse It's interesting to see how a bullet will arc through the air as it travels for 600 - 1200 yards or so. For example: A 175 grain .308 round might drop perhaps 630 inches or so in 1200 yards and drift 14 inches with a crosswind of only 1 mph. There is much reading you can do if you are inclined. Many bullet manufacturers offer "Ballistic Software" (or spreadsheets) so that shooters can calculate just how their weapon will deliver (approximately) a particular bullet.

@Annex2991 no you do 1.5 mile run then have 1 min brake then the 2nd 1.5 mile run as to be done in 9.40 but to have a defo pass you need be doing it in under 9 mins but thats nout you have to do the endurance course wot is 2 miles of cross country water obstacles tunnels followed by a 4mile road run back you also have to do that in the PRMC if you fail that you cant even start basic royal marines and USMC are very different look at the british gurkhas 33.000 try out only 300 pass every year

As a soldier and a former art student, yes, you have to be quite good at drawing. They can train you on that. I was however commenting on the eyesight. That MUST be perfect. Sad thing to watch many really talented and promising candidates pass through selection to see them failed due to a optical test. That goes for pilots and snipers, not to mention a world of other trades.

@Spjungen yes because we're actually making a difference in Helmand since the 2007 british stalemate. We took Sangin in a fucking year, after the RMs said it was a lost cause. Since they were there for 4 yrs and couldnt do anything better. We took Marjah in a month...Nov Zad..Musa Qala... The Helmand river valley...all places lost by the british in 2007.

Quick question... Is it possible if I'm set on becoming an officer to take sniper training? And probably just as important, would it be worth it? I know snipers are small teams usually, so I'm guessing it wouldn't link well with officer training, with that being all about leadership and whatever, but it is something that I'm very interested in...

@Michael19H The USMC was the most decorated branch of the military during Vietnam, as for higher caliber? Do you remember the duels between the USS Constitution and half a dozen royal navy vessels? US Marines captured 4 detachments of Royal Marines. One from the HMS Guerriere..HMS Java...Cyane...Levant The first ever encounter of the US Marines and RMs in 1778 ended in a Royal Marine surrender and the loss of the HMS Drake. The last one was New Orleans in 1815...google that one

I'm a royal marines sniper, and I'm bored of civvies thinking there sniping gurus, to become a R.M sniper you have to pass a 2 week selection at a commando unit than if passed you do another 2 weeks selection at CTCRM by the sniper training team than get loaded onto the 10 week course. On my course 17 started only 6 passed, you do the maths! You don't have to have done any amount of time to go on the course, if your good enough you'll get on it, any questions let me know...

@TheArmyUK A sniper pair work as a team, thus the role of observer and shooter is taken in turns. Most of the time now snipers are incorporated into rifle companies and FSG's in a support role so there is no need to have one acting as a spotter anyway. As for the question on what calibre bullet hurts the most, did you really have to dignify that question with an answer?

And trust me, we would love to go through your training. Our's has gotten so pussified it's unbelievable. If some idiot accidentally breaks his neck in training, mother's start crying, senators get called, investigations commence, and 5 months later 25 people have lost their careers, an absurd safety measure is put in place, and the training is so watered down by risk management that it's lost nearly half of it's value, all because some guy didn't use commen sense.
