The thing people never seem to appreciate about beans on toast is how much it costs to make. 2 slices of bread, a bit of butter or spread, half a can of supermarket beans, 80 seconds in the microwave. A light meal in about 3 minutes, all for about 30 pence (38 cents).

When we were kids Jess... Mum always bought us Heinz Baked Beans... Up until about 1990 when Branston Baked Beans were first introduced... They changed our minds about our Baked Beans shopping choices... Branston Baked Beans are tastier and in a much thicker and richer Tomato Sauce than the Heinz... Plus they were much cheaper than Heinz Baked Beans too... So it was an easy choice for us to make as a family really... And we haven't bought Heinz Baked Beans ever since... And although it's not for everyone... As kids we used to eat Eggy Beans... It involves heating up a tin of Baked Beans in a saucepan... And once it's bubbling away... Crack open and add a raw Egg into the Baked Beans... And mix it thoroughly into the Baked Beans... Until the Egg has mixed in and cooked through... making the Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce go a much lighter orange colour... As well as thickening up the Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce... We loved having Eggy Beans on Toast as kids... I don't have it as much these days... But every once in a while i get the urge to have them again... 😋Thanks for the video... All the very best Chris and Jess... Cheers guys. 🍺

As the son ofca farmer, with a brother who is still farming, just a heads up on sheep farming. Sheep are always trying to find new and interesting ways to end themselves. Therefore expect a significant attrition rate on any stock. Lamb is culturally cross European. In my humble opinion the way Greeks prepare lamb is quite possibly other worldly. But roast lamb with Garlic, Rosemary and Thyme, served with crispy roast potatoes in duck or Goose fat, your favourite veg and killer gravy is the very next best thing. Wishing you and yours continued joy on our little island. There are some British beers i can recommend if you are at all interested?

We also liked having a Mustard Glazed Leg Of Lamb... When my late mother once said that she was trying out a Mustard Glazed Leg Of Lamb that Sunday... I wasn't overly impressed on hearing that... Mainly because i didn't like Mustard at the time... But OMG!... It tasted absolutely amazing... The strength of the hot Mustard is greatly reduced during the oven roasting process... But it leaves a wonderfully dark crisp coating on the Lamb... And a savoury umami style flavour bursts through... It enhances the already naturally strong Roast Lamb flavour... So if you don't like Mustard... Please don't be put off by having a Mustard Glazed Leg Of Lamb... Trust me... It tastes incredibly delicious guys. 🍖 😋😉 Enjoy!. 👍

@DaydreamersBarn as far as beer goes my taste, and therefore the ones I would recommend are darker ,maltier beer. Not a fan of hoppy IPA. I will stick with widely available beers for ease. Hobgoblin ( the dark Ruby ale) Old Crafty Hen ( the darker, stronger version of old Speckled hen) London Pride ( a good standard English bitter) McEwans Champion ( very strong 7.8%, will sit you down) Batman's XXXB ( Made in Boston, the original one) And for a little variety a cider for a hot day! Thatchers Katy(7.2% of Appley goodness)

@@DaydreamersBarn Unfortunately... Because of the medication i take daily... I can only drink low or non alcoholic beers and lagers... As the alcohol can alter the effectiveness of my medication... But if you're interested in a very good low alcohol beer... I can highly recommend the German Erdinger Alkoholfrei Low Alcohol Wheat Beer Bottle 500ml... And contains less than 0.5% Alcohol by Volume... So if you're out for a drive and stop off for a pub lunch... You can have a few bottles of this without going over the drink drive limit... I met an Anglo-American couple in LA in the 90s who ran a rather upmarket used furniture warehouse that made a living by coming to the UK for a month each year in their quieter periods in the Winter to do house clearance auctions and visits to antique and charity shops. They bought a lot of stuff - filling a shipping container each year. I was told that British furniture, especially 1940s post-war Utility kitchen units at that time, surprisingly, being especially popular with their customers.

in regards to lamb, theres lots of cuts you can get from lamb, when you get back home, get a whole lamb and get a butcher to cut it into portions ready for the freezer. leg of lamb(roast). shoulder of lamb(roast). neck of lamb(great for stews with winter seasonal vegs with pearl barley). rack of lamb(ribs roasted). lamb chops, grilled, fried, roasted. i think theres a few more cuts too, best pop into a traditional british butcher and ask them about the cuts you can get from a whole lamb. and if your feeling adventurous lamb or mutton makes the best currys. and left over lamb from a sunday roast makes the best lamb hot pot.

On the Kettle…the problem with using a Kettle in the US is that 110v means that 3kW requires nearly 30A and none of the UK kettles will work. Also the cables would be huge. US houses do have 220v supplies but they are split into 2 phases using a center tapped transformer (hence providing two x 110v phases for use in the house). All the big appliances (stove, dryer, etc) use 220v. You could install a 220v 15A socket for your kettle in the kitchen (using an approved NEMA 6-15 socket) - check with your contractor.

One of the great things about a Sunday roast is you can change it up. There are four main variants depending on your taste and the price of different types of meat at any given time: - Roast chicken. Often with a couple of strips of bacon - Roast beef, traditionally with yorkshire puddings. These days many people have yorkshire puds with all four. - Roast pork. Traditionally with crackling, apple sauce and/or mustard sauce. - Roast lamb. Traditionally with rosemary and mint sauce - which I'm guessing is your favourite. All of course with roast potatoes, various veg, gravy, stuffing, maybe some chipolata sausages, etc... that you can tweak to your personal taste or what's in season.

For it is written in the good book, "man cannot live without chocolate, especially Cadbury's or Galaxy." How on earth do you expect to be able to get Yorkshire Tea in Upper Michigan? Do they sell it in Walmart? A roast leg of lamb done properly is a joy. But you can only have it bought from a supermarket. If you get sheep as livestock, any lambs that they have become "pets" and it's impossible to slaughter a pet. Also, how good are you at delivering lambs at lambing time? You need to watch farming programmes and the Yorkshire Vet on tv, to get an insight into what's involved.

Dear Jess, I’m surprised you never mentioned crumpets. Have you ever tried them? They’re not sold in America to the best of my knowledge but many Americans here love them. Toasted with any kind of spread you want, butter, peanut butter, biscoff, etc. They’re much loved in the UK

I am guessing you bought a kettle in England using the 240volt system, if you take it back to America and put on a American style plug and if it works then remembering that the two systems are different in how they work you will find probably that it will take much longer to boil the water using the 110volt American system. Also because it’s only 110volts and kettles are anywhere between 1700 to 2000 plus wattage it may trip your fuses if some other high wattage appliance is also plugged in at the same time. I read this from another American who suffered similar issues, so check to see that your circuits in your next house are up to par. Talking about beans on toast, remember there are a lot of products sold in the UK and Europe that are what appears to be the identical product in the US but please compare the ingredients as you may well find added sugars and other unknown chemicals have been added. Just check out the American and British versions of Heinz Tomato Ketchup as an example.

The other thing about a kettle, is that if you want to cook something that needs to be put in simmering water, you can use it to heat the water faster than you do in the saucepan. Never even thought of it until an American couple on KZbin said they did it, and they're right! Have you tried which tea brand is best to make iced tea with?

Great stuff as usual Jess. About the tea situation, I'd be interested to know how a cup of Yorkshire tastes when you do get back to Michigan. I usually take my favourite (Twinings Assam) tea bags with me when I go abroad and I've noticed the taste varies a lot. I believe it depends on the amount of natural minerals present in the water and also the different types of added disinfectants like chlorine used in certain countries. The type of milk used also makes a big difference.

I can’t begin to imagine a country without antique shops or indeed National Trust buildings, and of course free museums and galleries. The beans used in baked beans are haricot beans. You could make a simple tomato sauce (using tinned tomatoes) with a little sugar and seasoning and add in cooked haricot beans - should be able to find these tinned. I also recommend Delia Smith's brilliant cook book which simply explains how to cook British dishes (incl. Yorkshire puddings) - its called 'Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course'. You can find it in some charity shops, online or in bookshops - it's a must have, regarded as a no nonsense authoritative cookbook.

I had to spend 6 months in Southern Cali back in 2008. Not the worst place in the world to spend some time, having a US Boss with a bunch of guys on EU contracts was interesting though. He wanted us to work 12 hours a day so we left off an hour early on Wednesday and came back on Monday. We were on 35 hours a week contracts. However I digress. After 2 weeks I wondered if the American's knew you could eat sheep or they just thought they were for growing wool for sweaters. I had to go to a Kebab house in a really sketchy part of LA to fulfill my lamb craving. Met some interesting people who wanted to talk to me about Pink Floyd, I love rock music put never been a Floyd fan. And a Mexican guy in a Liverpool shirt. Glad you like kettles, Sunday Roast, tea, garden centers, pubs, good beer, baked beans and all the cool sh*t. When making your beans on toast, you can elevate the richness of the sauce by adding a knob of butter once the beans are heated and stir in (monter au beurre as the French say), even cheap no frills own brand beans can benefit from this (and you don’t need to butter the toast). Other options are to put cheese (Red Leicester) on top of the beans on toast and place under the grill to melt the cheese. I’m a bit odd in the fact that I also enjoy a spoon of peanut butter (in place of butter) in the pan of heated beans; as an American you might not think it sounds so odd?

Further down the line, would coming back to the UK to live, be something you would consider? BTW, you can buy air conditioning here in the UK, and it's not overly expensive.

We have definitely thought about it. We definitely can see ourselves very happy here. We do have a portable AC. It's just not easy to cool every room in the house with our 3 dogs and 4 humans in different areas of the house. 🤍 Jess x

I've heard people say that the lower voltage in the USA (110v) compared to the higher UK voltage (230v) means a kettle in the USA takes much longer to boil. I don't know if there is a 'fix' for this.

I think when we remodel our kitchen, we will ask the electrician if we can try and have the 230v incorporated in our kitchen remodel. 😉 🤍 Jess x

@@DaydreamersBarnwe travel to the states frequently and use an electric kettle (we even bought a cheap one in Walmart for when we are staying in a hotel; pack something inside when it’s in our case). Yes it’s slower than UK, but the great thing isn’t so much the speed but the fact that you can just switch it on and leave it to boil while you do something else. A US kettle spec’d for 110v is still a great thing for boiling water.

Oh my goodness Jess, it is funny to think how electric kettles never really took off in the USA. Are they just not great for anything that needs boiling water. PG Tips for me. Bags for life, you can't go wrong for the environment. The UK for sure has the most and best charity shops and organisations in the world. Sunday roast = wholesome goodness. Beans on toast is nice, but probably better with a Full English Breakfast. Lamb chops, yum yum, but best marinated with mint sauce and fried on a pan. (Minted Lamb Chops). British beer is great but, for some reason us Brits love a good old Aussie's pint of Fosters. For sure, the British love their ready meals which is why every home in the UK has an microwave oven! 🙂

In USA a stove top kettle on a gas ring probably boils quicker than a 110 volt electric kettle.

I think it did, but not as it has here in the UK. Now I just can live without one in my house or on holiday. I agree. Best charity shops around. Sunday Roast is fabulous! I truly appreciate you sharing your time with me. 🤍 Jess x

If you already haven't, my recommendation is to go to a car boot sale, just a fun Sunday morning day out and maybe get some bargains.
