This video is extremely wrong, it uses the old saying the British are coming which is politically incorrect

@@Ewperty Incorrect, yes, but politically incorrect? And how does one spectator saying it equate to the entire video being “extremely wrong?”

Not actually sure -- it came with the original footage "Captain Philly" used on his page.

Now I KNOW the crime rate's out of control in Philly if the authorities have to call on His Majesty's forces to put things right! Have at 'em Bloodhounds! A question in all seriousness. Would the 40th of the time have shouted "KILL-KILL-KILL!" when they came to charge bayonet? I thought "Huzzay!" would have been the cry.

A more likely cry would probably have been "huzza(y)!" - but there's at least one cool reference to Kill! Kill! Kill! being used - Thomas Simes, on page 293 of his 1780 Treatise on the Military Science, says troops assaulting a fort, after breaching the walls, are to "lay down their tools, handle their arms, and mount all at once with fixed bayonets, and fall upon the enemy, crying aloud, kill ! kill ! kill !" It's fun to (historically) spice things up a bit.

@@HMthRegtofFootndBattLI Thanks for the response! "Kill-kill-kill!" had me scratching my head a bit as it sounds a bit anachronistic, it wasn't unusual for US Army and Marine recruits to shout "Kill-kill-kill!" during training during the Vietnam Era. I DID go to a Rev War re-enactment around 1980 or so where one of the American re-enactors slipped out of character a bit and yelled "WASTE THE MOTHERF**KERS!!!" Whoops! I thought to myself "Take it easy man, you're fighting Redcoats, not the Viet Cong!" I'm no expert on the 40th by any means, but I do know at Paoli their approach was quite stealthy and quiet. At the Baylor Massacre in New Jersey a year or so later British troops yelled "No quarter to the damn rebels!" and "Skivver 'em!" The 40th wasn't involved in that one. I've never read Simes, but I have read Captain George Smiths "Universal Military Dictionary" from 1779. He doesn't mention "kill" at all.

Some saucy language indeed. The company we portray was part of the 2nd battalion of light infantry, which did take part in the Baylor attack - so, it's likely the 40th's light company was there (though they shipped off to the Carribean around then, so it's possible they missed it). Hard to find a good list of the composition of the light infantry battalions at the time.

@@HMthRegtofFootndBattLI Right. I hit the archives here and found the offical make up of "No-Flint" Greys force was the 2d Light Infantry, the 33d and 64th Regiments, and 50 dragoons. No list of the make-up of the personnel in the "2d Light Infantry." The 40th was certainly in New York at the time (September 27, 1778) so it's a good possibility the 40th's Light Company was part of the task force. The 40th was deployed to East Florida in November of 1778. (Good time of year for it!) In July of 1779 six companies were deployed to Antigua, the rest of the regiment went to Barbadoes. You probably know this already, at the time the site of the Baylor Massacre was called "Old Tappan," today it's Rivervale NJ. Reading of the level of training the light infantry got at the time, and how it was made up of very physically fit and highly motivated young men I can't help but think that if somehow they were transported into our own time and given modern weapons they'd fit in very well with modern infantry. The red coats might be a problem though!

Thing is, when shouting kill, kill, kill, the e emy does not always comply. Its making an assumption that the enemy won't... Kill, kill, kill. 👍

In reality he didn't say that 'the British are coming'. He said that the regulars are coming. Remember that the the regulars were still the regular army of the cronies. At that point there was no national distinction as colonials could and did join the regular army as well as the local militias.

Entirely correct - but we're generally not inclined to lecture drunk folks on the streets of Philadelphia.
