Yes in American english hot lunch is a meal served to people in an institutional setting, such as a school. I also know there is another meaning for hot lunch but a negative one and it is slang language

Americans use "test" more than "exam" and sit an exam is simply a collocation that is also used and that means the act of answering the questions. This combination just sounds right to native speakers.
