Peter Jackson has said Casting LOTR was super important because he didn't want known actors and big block buster attention being focused on the characters. In doing so it would ruin the whole atmosphere of the film and detract form the characters themselves and not allow the audience to fully believe what we were seeing on screen. So hats off to Russel for picking up the sublet silence PJ gave him as his way of saying a polite no thank you.

If you want to see Russell Crowe in his first serious lead role, checkout the Australian movie Romper Stomper. Not a movie for the faint hearted.
