Thanks. I am singing an art song based on Anne's letter and scaffold speech. This was helpful. As for Rapa Nui (Easter Island), there's been an update that there was not mass deforestation, and the island rocks themselves have been used as a kind of mulch for centuries to grow crops. Many more happy trips around the sun, Philippa!

If the Cotton version of the letter is around 1605-1610, based on the watermark, that would be after the death of Elizabeth I, so there wouldn't be any reason politically to write it (in an effort to clear Anne's name) because Anne's daughter was also dead at this time. It's possible, of course that it's a copy of an original likely written sometime between 1536 and 1547 (the remainder of Henry's reign) or between 1558-1603 (Elizabeth's reign). Outside of someone just having sympathy for Anne or an objective interest in history, I can't see anyone bothering to write it in Edward's reign, and definitely not Mary's. Elizabeth never really made too much of an effort to clear Anne's name, at least publicly, though she did support her Boleyn relatives. I don't see her commissioning the letter outright, and I don't see that anyone would write it in an effort to impress Elizabeth otherwise it would have been better known and circulated widely. So I'm stumped. Maybe the most logical explanation is she did dictate or write a letter. But without clear provenance or evidence, it's hard to say conclusively.

Many thanks for this fascinating interview. I believe Amanda Glover is the person who, due to her meticulous research, will, in time, uncover the mystery of 'the letter'.

I think by the time Anne got to the Tower Henry was sick of her and wanted to move on. Therefore, he was not asking for any letters from his ( soon to be dead) wife Anne, he was ready to get a new sweet wife. On the other hand Anne was praying for Henry to take care of Elizabeth and not destroy her family, so if she was writing on her innitiative the timing of the letter is important. Early on she may have asked for her life to see her daugther grow up even from far away, but as days went by she realized that he was done with her, regardless of excuse and would only write about future.

I've heard this discussed on other channels very recently. This has been the most informative of all I've watched. Thank you so much for all the points & counter points in the information presented. I had put this down to a probable hoax from a much later time in history. I'm putting that thought on pause till further info is presented. Would the chemical componants of the ink on the handmade paper offer any insight on the age of the letter? Due to the watermark, the age of the paper has been put within 100 years of Anne's lifetime. Can the ink ingredients offer any time parameters that can be compared to the age of the paper?

I agree, if the document was possibly copied in 1606, then it's possible it was earlier and written to please Queen Elizabeth. Continue the great research Amanda Glover!

I always thought the letter sounded like Ann. She was always very outspoken even encourage to be outspoken by Henry when he appeared to be so amused by Frankness. In the tower, I could imagine the first days she was mystified. Why was she there? What was she supposed to have done? And perhaps being tormented by the ladies who were not her friends, to be told who the people who were accused with her. On reflection, she must’ve thought this can’t be true, these are his dear friends. Surely they will speak up for me. And as time went by, it dawned on her that she was going to be executed for failing to produce sun she promised.

What I wanna know is is there any evidence that any of this truly happened with Anne and these men and her brother?

@katherineharrison no evidence at all from the known historical record. Henry VIII wanted rid of her quickly & so it was done.
