I wish the British had allowed the R100 to continue to operate. I like the mooring mast "boarding tower"... They had a lot of good ground handling equipment ideas for their proposed airship program.

@@astereux4519 Obviously the R101 didn’t crash on her first flight just as Titanic didn’t sink on her sea trials, both were lost on their maiden voyages (one other comparison to make while we’re at it is that both had sister ships which had already seen some success beforehand)

Interesting to hear the engine noise in the background. I have always wondered what the engines of the huge rigid airships sounded like. BBC Radio did an excellent serial called The Magic Carpet, about the R100 and R101 projects, and that had a sound effect of the airships' engines. They probably used the same one for R100 and R101, although they had different types of engine.

It would be great to see a dirigible with modern technology such as carbon fiber, state of the art computors with vector thrust engines, modern avionics. I think it would be a workable design..

100% agree. While the economics for general commercial flight don't make sense, I'm sure there is something akin to a mega yacht charter in scope that could work economically.

True, it is not exactly the same scale as the airships of yesteryear, but the Zeppelin NT operating out of Friedrichshafen sounds like your description. Flew on it myself, a wonderful machine

@TheRealNeill I would go with turbo electric Drive, engines generating electricity which would power the motors. The solar cells could power the motors without any extra weight involved

The press of the time praised the slow speed of the maiden flight for maintaining the comfort of the passengers. The truth was that she could not fly any faster, being forced to use 4 engines of 585 hp instead of the designed 6x 650hp.

The rearmost engine was originally for reversing only. When the ship was modified and lengthened, the rear engine was geared so it could be ran both forwards and backwards

They the R100 and R101 weren't commercial airships they both were experimental just remember that the R 100 made a successful trip to North America
