I've listened to Lord Kitchener for years but this is the first time I've seen this epic clip - it's like being there at a musical flashpoint in time. I'm about to cry with joy.

The Windrush generation were here in Britain not because they couldn't find work in the West Indies ,but because the British government invited them to come and help built Britain after the destruction caused by the second world war. That's a historical fact.

This is a complete myth. A Home Office letter written just before the Windrush docked makes it clear that no-one intended people coming from the Caribbean and says they were coming of their own accord!!!!! We actually wanted people from Australia. Canada. New Zealand etc. Most arrived on the Windrush without any place to reside or a job to go to and this had to be sorted for them. They were not invited - sorry, but that's a fact and confirmed by documents in the Public Record Office which can be found on-line (as the manifest can also be found). The Pathe News put their own spin on it, as they were prone to do.

George Isaacs was the Minister for Labour in the Clement Attlee government. Here is his response to the arrival of Empire Windrush. "I don't know who sent these men, it is bound to end in difficulties. We can give no assurances that they can be found suitable work. I hope no encouragement will be given to others to follow them". Hardly a ringing invitation for them to up sticks and come to England.

That’s actually the biggest lie in British history. They came on a whim after buying cheap tickets for an empty boat.

@@NickThomas-uz6lg very true in fact the government were opposed to it coming here. As David Olusoga writes 'The government, however, regarded her [the Windrush] as an embarrassment. There were instant recriminations in Whitehall and behind the scenes attempts were made to ensure that the Windrush did not set a precedent and inspire further migration. Arthur Creech Jones was heavily criticized for having allowed her to set sail. He stood accused of failing to have ‘kept a lid on things' and permitting this 'invasion' of Britain by West Indians.' However, British industry, the NHS and British rail were less queasy about immigration from the Caribbean.
