The footage of Canadian troops landing at Coursueille-sur-mer (men exiting the landing craft with French rooftops looming behind them) was the very first newsreel footage of the Normandy landings shown to civilians in the Allied countries after D Day. Canadian troops outshone their allies that day, penetrating further inland and seizing more of their Day One objectives than any other units. Oh yes, we remember them very well.

"Right in the spirit of attack." Time 2:14, are the Canadians of the New Brunswick North Shore Regiment leaving their landing craft. Canadian Film & Photo Unit cameraman Bill Grant captured the "only" footage of allied troops going ashore from their craft on June 6th. Later in the footage, a dumb Frenchman is waving a homemade U.S. flag whilst waking amongst Canadian troops who are collecting Germans prisoners. Action reports say the guy was a bit of a nut case & had never heard of Canada. But we were there & advanced further than any other allied forces on June 6th.

They use this footage in all the programs of D-Day. They always cut at the moment when a sargent pats a soldier on the back, showing his wedding ring. I have only ever once seen the footage continue showing those soldiers moving off the LC. And now cannot even remember what happens. I was watching in 1984 I think, when it was shown, and my father said he had never seen that clip beyond the wedding ring.

@COIcultist5 ай бұрын
I may be wrong, but while Bill Grant may have captured footage of allied troops going ashore, the footage at 12.14 was captured by an automated camera in the landing craft. As I understood it, there was a deep-seated fear the landing might be a rout, somewhat like the Dieppe raid. Auto cameras had been fitted to the landing craft, how these and the film were to be recovered is beyond me. As the footage was shot by an automated camera, there is now, nor could there have ever been, any copyright to the film. Copyright does not apply to any automated footage, as there is no "artistic Input." As there was never any copyright, the film (once in the public domain) was free to be shown without permission nor fee. Hence, why that clip is "Always" used for a D-Day landing segment.

This is a UK cinema newsreel. Television was shut down in the UK, until the end of WW2, so if you didn't go to the cinema, you had to rely on newspapers and the radio, as in BBC radio, because there were no other channels, but BBC radio channels.
@reggiekrager54115 ай бұрын
TV in the 30s-40s was in a very early development stage, and only like a handful of rich people had TV sets in their homes, as they were really expensive. Also the screens were super small and the quality really poor, which only allowed for one to maximum two people to watch at a time, they were more like radios with a small screen near the speaker. I've seen interviews with people who worked in BBC television during the 30s and they said they were never recognized on the street or enjoyed any other sort of notoriety, fame or celebrity status from their TV job unlike their later counterparts. So yeah, I don't think the shut down of television during WW2 made that big of a difference or impact for the great majority of the population at the time.
