The guitar playing of Michael Kelly Smith is some of the best for me. Long Way To Love guitar solo is still one of the greatest guitar solos. As a guitar player, I HAD to learn it....I still play it today fairly regularly, for enjoyment and warming up before a gig.

Brings back memories... Smith taught guitar at a music store near me in a suburb of Philly. This was after grunge had put most of the glam bands out of work. Michael was always cordial to me although I never took lessons from him. The music business was so strange back then. You could see guys on MTV and think they had "made it" but in reality were barely scraping by.

It's funny Dean Davidson named a band of his Black Eyed Susan. Because my old band Later That Day recorded at Dean's house in NJ. Our band had a song titled...Black Eyed Susan. My band did a gig with them about 12 years ago or so, and as far as we knew Billy was the only original member. I do believe Paris was the frontman at the time as well. We played a relatively small rock club in the Dayton, Ohio area, and there was literally 30-40 people there, including my bands wives/girlfriends and friends. I’m not saying this as an insult to the band, I thought they sounded great actually, but it was sorta sad. I still have the shirt I wore onstage that night, that Mr. Childs kindly signed for me 😎

I was 8 years old and a true Metal head in 1989, and I absolutely loved Britney Fox. I couldn't wait for the, "Long Way To Love" video to come on. @@jeffhenry7749 I've been saying that since I was a kid/teenager back in the 90's. It got especially worse during the mid-90's up to the late 90's. I hated all that shit...I hated and still hate Rap and hip hop with a fucking passion, that too killed and is continuing to murder real music. I stick to music from 1955-1992. Old rock and roll from the 50's, the British invasion, the British blues boom, psychedelic pop/rock, progressive, early to mid 70's proto metal, N.W.O.B.H.M., glam metal, speed/thrash metal, power metal, old school blues and most forms of jazz from 1966-1979. The only music genre I listen to that's somewhat current is Indie/dreampop and some of the shoegaze stuff, but other than that real music is in a very sad state these days.

@jeffhenry7749 Amen. Back in the 80s, most of us were latchkey kids that had to take care of ourselves most of the time(Gen X) and we listened to music to escape all the bullshit in our lives. Long Way to Love is a legit great song, Girlschool is a classic trashy (in a good way) 80's hair metal rocker. I recall thinking Dream On (seeing the video on MTV) would be a huge hit, but somehow didn't gain traction, and you really didn't hear from them again. That said, a good trip down memory lane, especially since their self titled album was probably the 2nd album I ever owned (on cassette), as I was 12.

I remember Britny Fox noted on their website a long time ago that they snagged an opening spot for Guns N Roses for a show in Japan and their live cover of Hair of the Dog inspired GNR to do their own cover.

Dizzy Dean was actually pretty active around Philadelphia after the Blackeyed Susan album. He actually put together another version of Blackeyed Susan that included Black Cowes guitarist Jeff Cease and recorded a demo called Just A Taste…..as in just a taste of what’s to come. But that only lasted a few months. He recorded another album under the band name Love Saves The Day, Then for whatever reason he recorded a demo under the name Jarod Dean that was pretty much only heard of in the Philly area…..it was god awful if I’m being honest. He finally released a solo album called Drive My Karma that I think you can still find of iTunes. Then about 10 years ago or more he said he was working on a country album, was somewhat active on social media, and even made a full blown video for a country song. Then out of nowhere removed it all and vanished into musical obscurity. His friend recorded a lot of the stuff on video in the 90’s. There is a great hour plus video on KZbin of some of those musical projects.

his story is one i would love to hear, told by him. he was crazy talented, and his deal for blackeyed susan, at the time, was one of the biggest the label had ever given.

@@patrickreeves4650 You're right. They were so behind it that I remember stories how they even had to pay another band off to use the name because it was already trademarked. The Black Crowes first album was huge at the time, as a gap between hair metal and grunge, and it got a lot of comparison to that. He had the look, the band, the songs, and everything, but listening to that album all these years later, I think it's just an over produced album. It would have been a lot better as a more guitar oriented album and not so many keyboards, horns, backing vocals, and all that. Do a KZbin search of "Dean Davison 403 Liberty Lane' and you'll see a full video of all he did thru the 90's, it's pretty cool.

@@rkline65 the 403 liberty lane stuff is super cool. the era of blackeyed susan was always my favorite, and the record was great, but i totally agree...it was over-produced, and the single chosen to lead the record was a terrible choice. i would have run with she's so fine, or the ballad that wound up on harley davidson and the marlboro man.

Great band of the day. Story demonstrates how hard it is to make a living in a band, on the road. I've read or heard that the record c.o fired MKS from Cinderella for not being a good enough guitarist? Seriously ??. He's a great guitarist, far superior skills than Jeff labar was. Shame B.F came about a few years too late to get traction & success. I have all 3 studio cds and Boys in Heat is an awesome hard rock cd . Loved their look and sound The perfect Hair glam metal band. Would be fantastic to see all original members tgthr again

I agree, MKS had the talent for Cinderella. I think he may have been seen as a threat to Keifer as the main guitarist/songwriter in the band and they cut MKS.

I heard a different reason. The record company thought MKS & Destra looked too old to market on MTV. They told Tom & Eric to replace them with younger faces.

@@adamkane7513 Makes sense....TV ruled music back then, image was far more important than playing. Bon Jovi was told to get rid of Alec Such for the same reason, but refused.

Don't really care for GIRSCHOOL, but I'll tell ya. I still listen to Long Way To Love on a regular basis when I'm in the hair metal mood. Giddy-up guitar always wrecks me, and that song is a masterpiece. That whole album was pretty great.

It was a band like many that only had success with a single album: T.SiSTER, Dangerous Toys, Kix, Damn Yankees, Slaughter among others... And they only left losses and debts to the label. It's not fair that they sell half a million copies and the label keeps 90% of the profits.
