I live in Wales, and I tend to find our country is a pretty good way to remember where the North/Midlands/South divides are. Basically, if you draw a line through England from the top of Wales, and one from the "bottom" (more specifically, around where the Bristol Channel is) then you get a pretty good rough idea. It's not 100% accurate, but it's a good approximation. Anything between those two lines is the Midlands.

I am from Nottingham which is a Midlands city (whether you are from the North or South should know this) so when we head onto M1 North from there, we pass Mansfield (in Notts), then pass Chesterfield (Derbyshire) and Worksop (Notts) - these are Midlands towns. Once you pass Junction 30 on the M1 (North), you will see Woodall Services and see the sign "South Yorkshire" - that is where the North definitely starts because a few miles North from there on the M1 will reach Sheffield which is a northern city and that I do know for sure so the northern chap from Doncaster is actually spot on. If you are driving on the M1 from London, the Midlands starts in Northampton (Junction 15) and finishes just after Chesterfield and Worksop after Junction 30, then the North starts from there. Now Lincoln is practically the same latitude as Chesterfield and slightly south of Sheffield but it is the Midlands most northern city so draw a line just under Sheffield and just above Lincoln will divide the Midlands from the North

As a midlander I must say (lived in Nottingham, Birmingham and Solihull) I think most people most identify as a midlander more often but if you erase the midlands for some reason then... I think many would say they are in the north. The reason is difficult to say I guess. I dont think its ever based on geographical landscape. You dont need mountains everywhere to be northern. It might be a language thing because my accent I would say more closely resemble northern accents than southern ones. Of course all accents are drastically different but there are some similarities.

For me in Cornwall, the midlands start around Bristol (it is over 150 miles from me, like going from London to Mansfield), and the north is from Birmingham north. The south as a region covers from east Dorset to Kent. Cornwall, Devon and Somerset is in the west (hence westcountry) or south west. We go upcountry to the south. Newcastle and Northumbria is in the east along with Kent and London. It is all down to perspective. London is as foreign to me as Yorkshire, they are both in the east. There are four ordinal points of the compass, not just north and south. England is wider east west (about 440 miles) than it is high north south, about 370 miles.

The midlands is: Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire (and everything south of them until you get to the south, which isn't my problem), The North is: Everything that used to be Lancashire (obviously including Manchester and Liverpool), all of Yorkshire, and everything north of them. That is, quite simply, a fact.

The bloke who divided the country into an even 3 is the only one who got it right imo. Sheffield and above = the North, Oxford and below = the South, the area in between the two = the Midlands. Simple.

I’m from Sheffield and have always thought of myself as a Northerner and proud. I think the majority of us in Sheffield would think so too though I’m from the South of Sheffield where the accent isn’t as strong but we still say bAth not BaRth. It seems anyone living North of the M25 is is classed as a “Northerner” to a Southerner.

Chesterfield is the line. When you leave Chesterfield going south, you're in the Midlands. The Midlands then ends at Northampton and everything south of there is the south with the exception of East Anglia. East Anglia is it's own thing on the east side of the country. Like an English Wales. This is the correct answer to this question.
@brothersman5242 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Totally 100% agreed here. Basically after Junction 30 on the M1 driving northwards after Chesterfield and Worksop is the official north when you enter Woodall Services and then to Sheffield. After Junction 15 southwards on the M1, which is the Northampton junction, is the official south which enters into Buckinghamshire. The guy from Doncaster actually got it right with his Neapolitan Ice Cream analogy

There's a Map Men video called "Where is the north/south divide?" which explains everything. TLDW: The north/south divide is different in the east than the west, making the line roughly a 45 degree angle with lots of squiggly bits. Nottingham and Worcester are both on the "north" side of the border, Leicester and Lincoln are on the "south" side.

We in NYS have that debate. To us, who live in Upstate, anything that touches the Catskills & down, is downstate, but people IN NYC think anything above the city proper is Upstate & people who live in Catskills also think they live Upstate. They do not. Run the top border of PA across the bottom of NY and that is a rough divider of Upstate & Downstate
