Megalithic period is the Iron Age (1500BC-500BC). It is the period after the Neolithic period, also known as the stone age (4500BC-1500BC). Megaliths are the stone structures (dolmens, passage tombs, menhirs - think Stonehenge) which built during the late Neolithic period into the Megalithic period.

I was born and lived next to the Batalha monastery and studied stonework there, the style you were seeing when you stopped the image is called Manueline Portuguese style, the main characteristics were the symbols of maritime discoveries, in the last years of construction as the main style is gothic. This Maueline portal is in the imperfect chapels, they were never finished, the project was abandoned after the death of the king and the architect due to the complexity of the work. It's not in Lisbon, but it's the second most visited monument

I love that during the Marvão segment I was just thinking about how I fell there when I was a little kid and scrapped my knee 😅😂 and what do you know? They showed the exact place I fell in the next footages 😂 But when you come to Portugal, you should definitely visit Barcelos (my city) where the symbol of the Rooster originates from (shameless plug here 😂) but in all seriousness..it is a beautiful city

Tomar doesn't have a castle actually - that is a convent, and it was the seat of the Templar Order in Portugal. In fact, after the extinction of the templar orders in Europe, Portugal protected their orders, and renamed them, allowing them to keep their status and wealth. As a matter of fact, the age of discoveries was founded by the templar order, as Prince Henry the Navigator was its grand meister. That is called Convento de Cristo and it is one of my favourite monuments in Portugal.

My favorite part of Portugal is Gerês, as for cities and towns… I would have to say Sintra, Porto, Lisbon, Évora, Coimbra, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Cascais, and of course the islands of Azores and Madeira.

Madeira is portuguese yes, not spanish, although it's close to the Canary islands. Madeira means literally "Wood" because when they found the Madeira Archipelago (or island chain) it was filled with wood. The island chain is made of 4 islands: Madeira island (the big one) and Porto Santo, both inhabited; and then the Deserted island(s), and the Savage island(s) both uninhabited (given the name). The later actually very close to the Canaryes of Spain

While Tomar is a amazing place to visit, it have a little "problem". When we visit Tomar, everything is beautifull, and we see the Templars buildings, and all that, but the best way is with a guide, and especialy of the guide teuly understands all the little details of the city. Tomar is not a ordinary city, it's not even like other Templar cities in Europe, Tomar is THE Templar city in the world. They build it from scratch, and they build it to be their headquarters. It have so much details and so much secrets, that centuries later we still believe some secrets are still unknown. Again, amazing place, but visiting with some context it's even better.

Hi, the statue you are talking about is in Almada, a city on the south side of the river Tejo, and you can see it from Lisbon. It's like the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, but in a smaller scale.

@mariam.32248 ай бұрын
@ruben83alves8 ай бұрын
@optimisation58937 ай бұрын
Cheers.

I think she was thinking of Madrid, when I first went to England (I was born in Madeira), when people asked me where I was from and I said Madeira, they would always reply oh Madrid in Spain right - followed by me rolling my eyes and saying no, it's part of Portugal. The weird thing is, most tourists who visited Madeira were English.

I also like EVORA in the south of Portugal and VISEU, GUARDA and the mountain SERRA DA ESTRELA in the BEIRA ALTA area. Lisboa city belongs to foreigners ! I like Coimbra too.
