Trump Won the electoral and Popular vote. So no one can argue the people of the US didn’t want him- majority did. That is an asinine statement. Popular vote mean that the people throughout the whole country, all get equal votes. One body, one vote. It doesn't matter where any one body is standing, in the country, when they vote. Every person counts as one vote. The electoral college is not fairly created. Example; Wyoming has approximately 700,000 people. The state gets 3 electoral votes. That means that each electoral vote represents 233,000 people. In California there are 40 million people. The state gets 55 electoral votes. That means that each of the electoral votes represents 727,000 people. One electoral vote in Wyoming has 3 times the power of each vote in California. It ended up this way, because our founding fathers couldn't have dreamed that states would have 40 million people in it. It's time that we go back to using the numbers that our Constitution States we should. That would mean, that for every 34,000 people in a state, it gets 1 electoral vote. That would make every state equally represented.

Yeah some people, them all being left leaning as far as I have seen, aren't fans of the electoral college, mainly because they often have hard time winning it, and instead have an easier time winning the popular vote. The electoral college has exited in the US since the late 1700s when it was put in the Constitution. Also attempting to get rid of it would almost be impossible considering it would require passing a Constitutional Amendment through Congress then require 2/3 of the states approval. That's required for all Constitutional Amendments. One of the main reasons it exists is to bring a compromise between states with a large population, who would basically control the popular vote, and the remaining less populated states, that's why the numbers differ. Also the electoral college exists, more importantly, to recognize the power of the states themselves. After it was the states at formed the nation and its government in the 1700s. The electoral votes can only change after every 10 years when a census is done to tally population changes, which currently, on average shows at least in 2030 when the next census takes place, many of those electoral votes will be taken from more northern states and given to more southern states and people move south. As for Trump's win, he is only the second US President to win non-consecutive terms, the first was Grover Cleveland in 1885 and then in 1897.

The Electoral College was a brilliant solution to the problem of the tyranny of the majority. The ancient Greeks had a Direct Democracy (one person, one vote) and it contributed to their downfall. A vote of over 50% governs all. So if 50.1 % of the people want to impose their will on the 49.9% thay can do it. The Electoral College takes that away. The U.S. is not a democracy, it is a Constitutional Republic, a confederation of states. Without the EC the major metropolitan areas on the coasts could dictate to the entire country. One can see the effect of it when the winning candidate loses the popular vote. It forces those who want to govern to appeal to a wide range of states, rather than to just those in the biggest cities. The problem with this narrator is that he believes what the major American media says. Trump's first term was hardly underwhelming. In spite of the extreme pushback from the democrats and the press, he had several major accomplishments.

Keep in mind that the swing states shift around with the different decades. The swing states change over time. People move. Ideas change. So too do the swing states that make the difference in the election. And if the states do change, then that makes them all important. The main objection to the electoral college that people have is that a candidate can still lose even if they win the overall popular vote. The reason the Founding fathers did it this way was so that the large population centers of the country can't vote for the whole every single time. If this was the case, the rural population, which normally votes more conservative, would never have their individual vote make a difference. It would essentially turn into a one-party system, which our Founding Fathers did not want.

Up until Trump won them in 2016, WI, MI and PA were reliable Democratic states but have since entered the swing state category.

I'll never forget that election here in Canada when Trudeau got in. I was born in Newfoundland but now live in Alberta. Alberta is typically a conservative or NDP province. That election Alberta was largely conservative the bulk of the senate seats going conservative, all 7 of Newfoundland's seats went Liberal. A lot of people here were blaming "the stupid Newfies" for giving Trudeau a majority government. Alberta has 34 seats in the senate, Newfoundland has 7. And there are 338 seats in the Canadian senate. 7 is a blip on the radar.

Don't let anyone get away with saying a national popular vote is a better system. If we went by the popular vote, a few highly populated areas with very similar values and ways of thinking would dominate every election. With the current system, it forces candidates to have to appeal to the entire country as a whole. You can't forget about Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or North Carolina. You can't forget about Nevada and Iowa. California and New York cannot dominate everything. There is a reason we are not a direct democracy, and there's a reason our country decided against a national popular vote long ago. With the electoral college, a candidate must have wide appeal. The only reason you are hearing rumblings of a national popular vote is because Democrats are mad they've been winning the popular vote for the past 20 years and have lost elections because they didn't win enough electoral college votes. They're mad California and New York isn't enough to win. They're just being sore losers.
@scurra1163Ай бұрын
It is the better system. MOST of the developed world operates without the Electoral College and they do so quite well. _'You can't forget about Nevada and Iowa'_ Yes we can. They contribute little to the the economy or nation as a whole; yet they're allowed to dictate policy for States that actually drive economic, cultural, and intellectual progress; policies driven by demented fanatics that refuse to even attempt to compromise. It's absurd. _'With the electoral college, a candidate must have wide appeal.'_ Exactly the opposite. You only need to appeal to the states that have a disproportionate amount of votes for their population. States with historically poor education systems(by design of the party in power there) and are easily duped. _'They're just being sore losers.'_ No; we're just tired of ignorant, regressive policies being propped up by political DEI. If your polices were so good they would actually appeal to more people. But the only way you can succeed is by denying a far larger group of people their just representation.
@johnmcnulty2705Ай бұрын
The States (Maine, and Nebraska) that split their votes got it right. You get the best of both worlds. You count each individual congressional district as they vote, plus whomever has the most votes in the state gets the remaining 2 senatorial votes.
@ninja_tonyАй бұрын
The electoral college would be fine if the votes were split by district, or handled in some way that isn’t winner take all. That’s the key issue with the EC in its current form. And don’t you dare come on here with your clearly biased take and then whine about “democrats are sore losers”, because that’s a load of dogshit and you know it. You people also ALWAYS ignore the fact that California and New York have more republicans than any other states, and as it currently stands, their votes are meaningless. So if the EC went away, their votes would actually mean something. It’s common sense that every human being in this country should have equal say in who is elected. No one should have more or less power based on where they live. LAND DOESN’T VOTE.

I have to add my two cents on the electoral college after reading these comments defending it. As a left leaning person who grew up in what was considered a "red" state, I did not even feel like my vote mattered. Only 55% of the vote there is "red" though, so 45% percent of the population is basically not represented. We should not have 5-7 states deciding the fate of the entire country each election cycle and candidates should not be basically ignoring a large portion of states because they've already been deemed "red" or "blue."
@doop8436Ай бұрын
Can say same thing about Popular vote.. Electoral vote is done so that only a few states wouldn't decide who President.. Take California and New York(Please lol) they have a sh*t load of people. The Founders didn't want let's say 15 states get to choose the Pres and the other 35 states are out of luck.. It took almost all the states to decide the Pres..
@TheLastKentuckyIrregular9524Ай бұрын
So your answer is to put the power in the hands of 5-7 big cities? More importantly, why should whole states have their politics decided by one or two major cities? Look at Illinois for example. 90% of their counties are deep red. Why should illinoisans in those counties abide by the vote of Chicago?

This is an awful comparison, just awful. The electoral college leads to a vote in a certain state being more valuabe than those in others, both due to the winner takes all concept and the fact that some states represent somewhat more electors than their population justifies. When states are not represented equally, by default this hurts the rights of other states. The local rights in states are well anchored and the electoral college does not contribute anything to it. That being said: individual countries in the EU still have many more rights, liberties and sovereignty than any state within the US has.
