The reason for all the grape stuff is due to the US banning blackcurrant imports for a few decades. American confectionary used Concord Grape flavour instead (which are the black grapes you can get here and are gross) because they were grown in California, and presumably this spread to Japan after WWII due to American imports. Meanwhile in Europe we have blackcurrant which is way better.

You can get black currant stuff here (U.S.). Its usually in ethnically diverse stores though. And agreed black currant is WAY better.. Artificial grape needs to go away.

There's a variety of grape called Kyoho that tastes like the typical "grape flavor" of sweets. I have never seen them for sale in the States but they're very common in Japan and Korea. You usually peel the skin off (they slide right off) because they are very tart. I'm guessing that's the flavor of the candy you got. It blew my mind when I had the Kyoho grapes for the first time, literally like eating anything artificially grape-flavored. Lots of love from Tokyo! You two are the best

Concorde(sp.?) grapes also taste just like artificial grape flavoring and have the thick peelable skin just like kyoho grapes so those in the US could try this one to get a similar experience

That warning on the last savory item you tried from the state of california is posted everywhere. It’s referencing the burnt food particles from items that are cooked. In chain food locations like Starbucks and McDonald’s it’s always posted in the most obscure location, like near the restrooms. Basically if you’re worried about it don’t eat anything fried, burnt or caramelized.

Really wish people would put more country-specific snacks/confectionary in these kinds of boxes, instead of just putting in things that are comparable, if not exactly the same to stuff you can already buy. Since another user has posted something informative about the American obsession with flavouring things with artificial grapes, I thought I'd contribute with what I know about *anal leakage.* It was a bit of a scandal back in the 1990s. It came out as a thing, and obviously comedians were all over it. What it was, was Pringles did a "fat free" version. It used fat, of course, because you can't not, but a special fat called Olestra (tm). Olestra molecules looked like fat molecules, but a mirror-image version. This mirror-image quality is called "chirality", and is important in biology. Lots of chemicals have 2 versions, mirror-images of each other, and living things can only use one of them. Usually the "left" one. So Olestra tastes like fat and is greasy like fat and you can fry spuds in it like fat. But it's not digestible. So humans obtain no calories from eating it. That's it's crowning achievement... and it's downfall. Because if it isn't digested, it stays as it is. A fat, a grease. All the way down your colon. So it's quite slippy. Makes your intestines into a greasy slide, so... _things_ appear very quickly and without warning. Urgently. Faecally urgently. The sort of people who need low-fat Pringles aren't the people who'd only have one or two of them then replace the lid. They'd eat an entire can, or more, of Pringles, and follow through horrendously, underwear apocalypse, filled with liquefied chewed Pringles from an hour ago mixed with whatever... well, you know what shit looks like, I don't need to describe it. This was just surprise-shit and in great quantity. That's what was hilarious about it. But they still use it! For some reason! It's crazy but now they just put the warning in small print and some silly bastards eat it cos they think you can make crisps into health food. It's not actually _dangerous,_ it just seems pretty stupid. Then there's the sugar-free Polos thing, where some candies are made from Sorbitol, a sugar replacement. It's a sugar alcohol and another type of food-laxative. Again, people choose to eat them. Why not melt a bar of Ex-Lax and make rice krispie treats? Do they still make Ex-Lax? It was chocolate laced with laxative on purpose. I dunno, some people are just *_weird._*
