So when the lady first mentioned having pieces of her heart given away I was like, "Well, at least she didn't bring up soul ties." And then they did a few minutes later. 😑 So I'm in my early 30's, grew up in church and went to a Christian school that was heavily steeped in purity culture, and I had never heard of soul ties until I was 29 and a coworker brought it up. I just remember thinking, "What on earth are you talking about? I've read the entire Bible and that is not in there." And then to hear them think you can catch anxiety or depression from someone that you have sex with? No. Just no. Mental health diagnoses are not STI's. They're not a germ. They're not contagious. The closest you can get to "catching" a mental health condition is if you inherit a genetic predisposition from a parent. Them telling others you can spread anxiety and depression through premarital/extramarital sex absolutely disgusts me as a licensed therapist.

I had heard of 'soul ties' but never to the extent that people believe in the 'inheritance' of depression and anxiety from a sexual partner. So ridiculous and wrong!

Purity doctrine has definitely evolved from the “duct tape” sermon days. I was always suspicious of Christianity’s restrictions of sex and relationships(big surprise I’m queer LOL) I can’t imagine what my mindset would have been being taught about “soul ties” as a consequence of being intimate with a partner.

These were my thoughts exactly - it sounds like people who are really wanting an explanation for something they believe they have no other answer for/solution for...Which is sad and understandable - but this kind of messaging is super toxic and unsafe for people actually suffering.

What’s interesting is the people I have heard about soul ties from are people who are more new age, how energy from sex is transferred and can affect mental health. That’s interesting because Brittany is very against anything even close to new age. Not saying I agree or disagree on new age practices, just thought it was interesting
@ThePerceptionTrainersPT
@ThePerceptionTrainersPT Жыл бұрын
@@sarahyount9927 Well the thing is, when you start to look closely, you will find that 'new age' and 'christianity' have a LOT of overlap, and that you can kind of justify new age beliefs with fundamentalism and vice versa - because we aren't all that creative when coming up with rules about the universe as a species ;) There is a lot of overlap and just changing of the words even though the concepts at their core are the same.

They’re idolizing marriage and marital sex. Marital sex is a lovely thing, but the act itself doesn’t increase one’s holiness. A single person is equally close to God as a married person. Purity culture has cultivated this damaging idea that marriage is the ultimate expression of Christianity. They’ve turned sex into a spiritual rite. It’s gross.

She's also confusing introversion (which is essentially just a lower need for social interaction) with being socially awkward and even unlikeable. I am very introverted, and I need a lot of alone time, but I also enjoy social interactions and I'll even cheerfully chat to people on buses or in supermarket queues. I have a serious problem with the fundamentalist opinion on porn & masturbation. They think if someone views porn a handful of times, it’s an addiction. If a person masturbates occasionally, it’s an addiction and you’re dirty, shameful and broken. It’s just such an extreme and sad way to look at an aspect of sexual health. I shudder to think just how many people are ashamed, self loathing and depressed because of that messaging.

The introvert thing cracked me UP! First, Jesus absolutely was an introvert. Dude had to have 40 days / nights in the WILD by himself when he found out what he was going to have to do; he asked for time away from the disciples before he was arrested; and he constantly just up and disappeared from the disciples lol. Anyways, back to the whole introvert “speaking death over yourself” thing. My parents raised me in the same toxic thinking (I believe it’s something in these “spiritual healer” circles) and boy, was it ANNOYING! Its such a low-level, low-effort way of thinking and being; and it ultimately doesn’t allow anyone the space to express *a n y t h i n g* or ever truly feel like they’re being heard. It’s the thought that your words hold all this power and you’re speaking things over yourself that A. God hasn’t spoken over you (??) B. The Bible doesn’t speak over you (_obviously… as societies develop & discover things over time and language has to adapt therefore we can’t expect a some-odd thousand year old book to mention specific things._) It’s often to the point that you can’t even share physical ailments or conditions because, “you shouldn’t speak that over yourself and be healed in Jesus’s name!” Yuuuck. My sister and I both are so triggered by that last phrase lol.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but compared to these ladies, I appreciate the way Bethany Beale has been talking about sex in her somewhat scammy sex course that someone reviewed on here. She is realistic that it might not be amazing, and emphasizes the potential need for lube, etc. While these ladies and Bethany all talked about the importance of talking more in the church about sex and what to expect, she has a much more realistic view than Brittany, I think. Rather than being taught that it's going to be perfect, people need to be taught all aspects: consent, proper names of body parts, mutual pleasure, etc.

52:30 she admitted openly in a video once that the reason her and Zach got divorced was because she “emotionally cheated” on him for months. So I’m not sure when the narrative changed that he abused her. Does anyone else remember her saying this? And then when she was dating that Niko guy at the same time she had the pit bull named Niko he did the same thing to her on Instagram and then everyone was ripping her to shreds for having double standards after doing the same thing to Zach.

"I keep hearing" is definitely in the Pentecostal/charismatic lexicon, meaning they are hearing from God directly and not just thinking of a verse or word. I don't think this a healthy line of thinking, but it's one I've personally experienced and I do feel some sympathy for them because it's really hard to live your life when your thoughts and God's voice are all jumbled together, especially if you don't speak to yourself very kindly (which many folks don't).

This was really interesting. I’m still not going to be a Brittany follower anytime soon but her religious takes here were more nuanced and showed more actual biblical knowledge than I’ve seen from her before. It was at least a bit less Christian influencer buzz-wordy and that combined with the lack of Jordan made this a whole lot more listenable. Re “Jesus wasn’t an introvert(so you shouldn’t be either)” 🙄 there’s obviously lots of personal interpretation/see your own experience there but I 100% see Jesus as an introvert and the story of the woman at the well (which started with him choosing not to go into town with his disciples) referenced later in the episode is one of many incidents that makes me read him this way.

But the cost of a wedding isn't the only financial consideration? For low income people receiving social safety net services- TAXES! If you file jointly, you risk pricing yourself out of qualifying ranges, especially in states like Texas that don't expand eligibility. Many services not directly linked to government programs still use those eligibility requirements. Sure, you can file separately, but then you bar yourself from claiming certain deductions (like student loan interest iirc). Taxes are just one of many things. When you're walking that very thin line at poverty between too poor to afford to live but not poor enough for help, every decision is impacted by finances.

Even though they "encourage" the one person to go to the courthouse to get married , I have a feeling they would be the same people judging them for going that route because Ive seen that many times

That's a little over simplistic. I think a lot of us with adhd are extroverted.

They should call this podcast "A million "mmms" and "Yes" podcast" lol. It was so annoying! Also they spent a lot of time laughing at things that weren't at all funny to me. I guess we have different sense of humors because I wasn't laughing. One of the big issues with purity culture is that it pushes the idea that if you save sex for marriage, sex is going to amazing and magical and that's exactly what they were pushing....and for tons and tons of people that is NOT the case at all. That's not realistic and is exactly what people don't need to be telling people...especially young people. I mean even if she doesn't want to admit it, Bethany from Girl Defined has created an entire sex course(not a good one from what I've seen and heard) because of the damage that narrative and the lack of education has done to her. Also soul ties truly makes me roll my eyes. I'm an Athiest now but I was raised Southern Baptist and they are very very against speaking in tongues...I mean I've heard people say it's a sin. It's a massive no no for them. So the idea of someone speaking in tongues when having sex for some reason really made me laugh!

I’m only 22 minutes in but the other women constantly agreeing and saying yes and stuff over the person talking is so incredibly distracting to me.

I do think Jesus sounds like he was an introvert by todays terms. He took time to himself. Spent time with a small group before he did larger speeches. Was open about when he felt energy leaving him. Was open about needing time alone to recharge. Why is that a bad thing? Has nothing to do about your care for people. 🤷‍♀️. (And. Neither introvert nor extrovert is a bad thing.

The conversation with the woman and her affair really ticked me off. Of course the woman who had an affair knows she messed up and wants to be that Godly wife to her husband now. I can’t believe they even suggested the husband needs to be merciful when the wife completely blames herself. Ugh Also. Why is legal marriage the ONLY line for marriage? Legal marriage does not equate to biblical marriage.

My win for the week was my sister and I saw Wicked for the first time. It was a lot of fun. The only unfortunate thing was they didn’t have the audio description. They only had the device for the hard of hearing.

The purity culture bullshit radiating throughout this podcast is so triggering. It took me so, so long to shake off all the chains of shame around all sexual activity. These women have no clue how much damage they've done with that segment of the podcast, beyond never answering the actual question with yaaasss girl! Also, I don't think Philippians 4:13 is going to get you through fixing a marriage post-affair. Seriously? Just blame it on The Enemy. Amen. 🤨🙄 This is so frustrating to listen to.

Introvert = batteries recharged during alone time Extrovert = batteries recharged when around others. Heard this a little while back and it made so much sense. I like being around friends and family and being out but my batteries are recharged during alone time.

There is an argument to be made for Jesus being an introvert. Introverts can make some of the best leaders Andean be very sociable and outgoing, they're not necessarily socially awkward, anti-social or have social anxiety or are shy, extroverts can be these things as well, they're not one and the same thing, it's not a symptom of one or the other is what I'm trying to say. Introverts more than likely like spending time alone and thrive doing so, that's how they recharge, so they tend to be more introspective because they're in their head so much and like thinking about things that they are more likely to be able to solve their problems whereas extroverts are so antsy and uncomfortable when they are alone with their thoughts that they are more likely to externalised their problems and don't spend a lot of time in their heads thinking of thing's and solving their problems internally instead at least that's what the extroverts in my life are like. I know not all introverts and extroverts are like this, but the ones in my life are so I'm speaking from personal experience so if extroverts feel differently please do tell, if you want to. Suffice it to say, introverts can make great leaders because they listen well and can be good problem solvers.

WFTW: Got to go to a comics show to table there. Sales could have been better, but got to see and meet new people and a few familiar faces. As a fellow introvert, I’m quite insulted by Brittany’s casual dismissal of the term. Again, judging and using Scripture to defend her specious claim. The emergency of more “Purity Culture” is no surprise. You are quite right, she has gathered up her Echo Chamber to blindly agree everything she says. Yes, I am a Christian, but I don’t believe in this idea of “soul-ties”. I had never heard the term until I was exposed to these Conservative Christian “Influencers”. I found the idea a bit silly, and ripe for these folks to weaponize it in order to promote their ideals. Interesting addition to the whole “speaking in tongues” thing. I wasn’t aware that an interpreter was needed. Every time I see it in some footage of it happening, I never see anyone interpreting.

So for the speaking in tongues thing… that rule of not speaking in tongues without someone there to translate is speaking specifically to meeting as a church or congregation. Which is a good rule bc as you said typically it’s done more and abused when there is no one to translate. But if you speak in tongues or in the spirit on your own- it’s not an issue. I don’t speak in tongues but I’m just explaining.
