Hi everyone! In todays video, I am sharing how I cut out fabric! Much like cutting out pattern paper, my favorite tool is a rotary cutter for cutting fabric. My go to marking tool are Frixion pens. I will be making a sew along for this video and styling it, so stay tuned friends.
I hope that you enjoy the video and thank you so much for watching! Be sure to LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE for more, and TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS so you don't miss my next video.
Blessings,
Brittany

Thanks for advising on how how to know if the grain line is in the correct place. I didn't know you should be measuring that part to make sure your fabric is not of center. I think if your new you can miss that and the final piece cut won't lay like they should or you see there is torsion in the final garmet.

Sometimes I make sure the selvage edges meet but they are not straight so I will use the fold as my grainline guide. I admire anyone who can cut with a rotary cutter! If my life depended on it, I would still slip and cut where I'm not supposed to!

Thanks for this video. Can you do some with the nap and matching plaids? I’m a visual learner and written instructions can be a bit confusing? TIA.

Hi Brittany. Thanks for the video. Like you I sometimes have problems with my marking pens. I have a Bohin Mechanical Chalk Pencil which I use for marking lines on difficult fabric. I'm in New Zealand so I'm not sure if you can get them in the States. Mine came with three different interchangeable chalk pencils and a sharpener. I find it works great. I got mine from Sewing Direct in New Zealand. Hope this helps. Take care.

Good morning🤗 Great information! Just a Q: I see that you push the rotary cutter with what looks like a push,push,push motion instead of of a continuous cut. Is this how it’s done or just how you do it? Rotary cutters kind of scare me…….cannot seem to get my lines straight!😔

Normally you use a smooth motion, so that you get a smoothly cut line, similar to using scissors. You wouldn't want a jagged cut either way. But find what's works for you to be able to cut safely and well. If you are uneasy about using a rotary cutter starting out, check out some quilting videos. They are the original users of rotary cutters. Karen Brown of "Just get it done quilts" has great basic videos. Last tips, a small cutter is good for control, curves and small areas. A large cutter is good for long cuts and straight areas. You can even buy a blade with a pinking edge. And train yourself to close the cutter every single time you put it down. Or get one that closes automatically. Happy cutting!

@@rmorine6394 Thank you so much for this information. Will definitely check the quilt videos. I’ve spent a lot of money on the rotary cutters…..now maybe I’ll get to use them! 🤗🤗🤗🥰

Thanks for suggestions and knowledge R Morine. ❤️You can do the continuous cut if you like or whatever works for you. I like the push push (especially if I’m a few projects in on that blade) you wouldn’t need to do push push with a fresh new blade. As long as you’re using precautions and being safe with your cutter, use whatever method you like.

Hi Joyce, yes, I always fold with right sides (pretty sides) together. That way I can transfer markings to the wrong side of the fabric. Thank you for watching.

I’m new at sewing and I just have a question! I bought a tote bag pattern and I have the material laid out and it’s folded. My question is… should the right side of the material be facing in?

Hello. Why 1pattern piece facing up and 1pattern piece facing down?
@brittanyjjonestv
@brittanyjjonestv 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Annie. Pattern pieces are something down depending on how they need to be placed on the fabric especially if it’s with a nap to keep all pieces facing in the right direction. It’s also how the cutting layout has it in the guide. You can play around with the layout. You’ll also see 1 pattern piece up and then flipped over if you have to cut it out one piece at a time on single layer to get both sides (right and left) if it’s a huge pattern pieces.
