I don't know if you were informed about this at some other point, but dream is also a dv/abuse survivor himself. We know of at least one very emotionally (and probably physically based on what he has alluded to other times speaking about it. He's said that he has been a victim of dv on multiple occasions, "even legally", although--as far as I recall--he's never referenced physical abuse in that specific relationship directly) abusive relationship he was in around the very beginning of his career (He also said very recently that up to a time around 2021-2022 he had "very little experience with girls other than toxicity & abuse"). This ex has also made attempts to sabotage his career after they were no longer together. It's seems he may be getting more comfortable talking about it as time goes on, as he appears to reference it more often than when he was first forced to speak about it. But he's reiterated very often the few times speaking on it that he always felt he couldn't talk about it because he was a man, and he wouldn't be believed. I think this may give some context to certain things, or provide some insight. Like how much he emphasized real victims in his video, or why his initial reaction to his close friend being accused of abuse in the case of manatreed went how it did.

he talked specifically about his ex a few years ago in a deleted pastebin cus people were trying to get dirt on him from her and she’d caused a few public problems. He’s referenced being an abuse survivor here and there, he talked about how the Manatreed situation caused him to spiral as a survivor in his pastebin about that (also where he references the legal part I believe), and mentions being a survivor in his reply to shubble about Wilbur. The experience with girls quote is from a Reddit post a few days ago.

It's nice to see your perspective on this as someone who gains nothing from liking or disliking him. It was getting to the point where there was so much hate online towards him that I was starting to wonder if he really was a bad guy and maybe I was just biased. All I wanna do is just watch funny minecraft videos I didn't sign up for all of this. Also just to let you know kind of what he is known for its minecraft manhunt on youtube, but outside of youtube he's known for being the villain on the Dreamsmp. I think a huge reason he has so many haters is because young fans have a hard time separating him from his dsmp character. Even before fake allegations he was getting old videos out of context brought back to make him look like a racist and just bad guy in general. Videos from when he was 14 and not famous at all. It's all stuff he has addressed and considering he grew up in a very conservative home in Florida I'm surprised there aren't even worse clips out there, the clips just show his ignorance of the world. So anytime something positive happens for him there will always be someone spreading old clips around again on Twitter. Now that public opinion has shifted so much, he can't post a tweet without 100s of hate comments calling him racist, ablelist, a pedophile, a groomer, a misogynist. Every time he mentions how videos should be back soon and they are recording and ready to make a comeback, new fake allegations come out and we have to wait again. It's exhausting as a fan. I just want minecraft Dream back.

the question of why dream is so hated is interesting, because there's just... a lot of factors going into it. I'd argue it started with the speedrunning scandal, which turned a lot of the mcyt community against him. But, generally people outside of that bubble dont care about cheating in block game. What they do care about, however, is a video of dream saying the n word. And those same people, because they aren't actually in the community, don't see when its revealed that said video wasnt actually of dream, and that the person who posted it knew it wasnt dream the whole time. So now mcyt hates dream, and broader twitter users who dislike white people saying racial slurs hate dream. and it just spirals from there. actual shitty stuff (along the lines of racist jokes) thats been apologized for and never repeated post apology is held onto with an iron grip. some of it is just the hate that comes from being the biggest person in your space. he's reactive, especially back then, so it's easy to get a mediocre worded immediate response to a situation from him. he's very clockably neurodivergent and queer. a lot of it is that misinformation gets spread, and no one cares enough to fact check it because "oh its the racist creepy minecraft guy", and very few people who do know better want to spend their time correcting the misinfo because all it gets you is replies full of people calling you an apologist. but i'd argue, that's not why the hate continues, even if thats how it started. it continues because people who just think he's cringe realize he's an acceptable target to bully. that's it. his dox was trending on twitter for days, and people celebrated it. people will believe anything about him, regardless of the evidence. hell, look at other reaction videos to 'the truth' and count how many dudes emphasize that they still think dream is cringe. sorry for the wall of text, its a topic i find genuinely so fascinating, in a miserable sort of way! i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the video, and it's always refreshing getting to hear from someone who just... very obviously has a life offline, and who has a steady moral framework through which they view the world.

I think a part that a lot of people don't know is that a chunk of the initial hate came from Kiwi Farms. He was raised conservative and absolutely EXPLODED in popularity. A guy like that would be a priceless pipeline, but instead of digging his heels in...he grew. He learned, he changed, and is pretty clearly on the left side of the political spectrum. So there was, at least from what I've heard, some bitterness and initial attacks stemmed from that. Nowadays he's become a Lolcow, like you more or less said-- it's easy to get a poorly thought out reaction from him, and it's easy to get points for shitting on him. That makes it a no-brainer to give him shit for literally ANYTHING he posts. Like-- if you just glance at the replies to any tweet he makes, count how many "nobody cared/but you're a groomer/etc" replies there are before anything remotely substantive. I mean these mfers have alerts on, but nooo, they totally don't care...uh-huh. Sure. It's super fucked! I hate twitter so I don't exactly scour tweets (I want the damn bird to die even a single second faster, pull the plug already Muskrat) but some people really need to be forced to touch grass.

@CoconutCashmere ah, I knew I'd forget something in my attempt to be concise Yeah, I think part of it is just, bubbles. Looking at qrts for dream was wild, because you'd see leftist twitter calling him a conservative bigot, and then conservative twitter would be calling him a special snowflake (homphobic slurs often included, even before he came out). These two groups both hate dream for opposite reasons, but they also hate each other so they'll never stop to consider what the other is saying or why. It'd be funny if it weren't so depressing One last thing is that 'dream stan' has basically become a boogeyman. The fandom reputation is in the dirt. Now, I only showed up here around 2021, so I can't speak to how deserved the reputation was back then. I can say that every time I've seen someone ask for proof that dream stans dox everyone, the same three disproven examples get pulled out. Dude's audience is huge, I'm sure it has, in fact, happened, but for the reputation I would expect at least a handful of real examples, you know?

@@AlterianAngel Yepppp. I have seen someone who keeps chickens have threats of their chickens being eaten or killed because one is named after Dream. I don't know how anyone can think to themselves, "I am a reasonable person, justified in threatening to kill someone's pet because I dislike a KZbinr!" If it was about literally anyone else, I think everyone would rightly realize that person Needs Seriously And Immediate Help. And probably to have twitter taken away from them until they can prove they can be responsible with it. Like...we just want to be left in peace. We just want to enjoy the stuff he makes. We just want him to stop getting harassment and false grooming allegations for breathing. (Or mocked for crying on stage over his friend who died of cancer in his early twenties-- one of the more ghoulish things I've seen on the internet!) They accuse him of being cringe, but imo they're the cringe weirdos for being so invested in hating someone. What happened to disliking things and moving on? What happened to doing things that actually bring you joy?? I hope one day those creeps look in the mirror and realize they don't actually like the person they see. Maybe then they can start working on becoming a person who can be happy instead of a bitter shell of a person with hate in their heart.

Quackity ghosted him, and now tommyinnit's mom is blasting him after everything hes done for them, he protected them when tommy got doxxed, when weirdos showed up to his home, talked with him and comforted him, just for his mother to come out dogging him for something he said months ago, all dream said was telling tommys mom he didnt like the abel*st and downright cruel things he was saying "as jokes". (14:30) generally speaking, Dream’s fans like him so much because he changes so much. We know he grew up a conservative white guy in a red state, and it shows whenever some random thing he did/said in the past is brought up. But what we appreciate about him is that he listens whenever he’s called out, and his responses show that he actually understands why people are angry. After that (or currently, if the thing he’s being criticized for is very old) you can tell that he’s different or improving. What I’ve gathered, as well as what I personally feel, is that someone who fucks up but shows clear change is MORE appealing than someone who presents themselves as this perfect unproblematic figure. Unfortunately the fact that he always addresses anything has the “stop responding, it makes everything worse” effect. So to his fans we see a guy with good intentions who’s a great example of “guy who grew up not knowing this shit but clearly wants to understand”, but everyone else sees “guy who is so terrible that he can’t stop fucking up”. In reality other people do the same shit and just never address it, so most people don’t find out.

A popular sentiment I’ve noticed among his Twitter stans is that we’re not even defending him as fans half the time, we’re defending him on principle lol. Like no, I actually don’t think that making a racist joke at 14 means you’re racist at 24! I don’t think you should have to be an obsessive stan to acknowledge something like that. Nothing about the way people treat or respond to him is proportionate to what he actually did. Being a dream stan unironically opens your eyes to so much shit. Sometimes it feels like we have to be the crazy ones. You wouldn’t believe how many queer people, EVEN BISEXUALS, I’ve seen say “he says he’s not gay, so he must be straight” (he has also said he’s not straight and that he likes men, to be clear) or some other wildly biphobic sentiment which they think is okay and reasonable PURELY because he’s the target. [insert prejudice] is okay as long as it’s directed at him. It’s incredibly disheartening to see people you otherwise really liked pull the craziest, most obviously horrible and bigoted shit out of their ass and think it’s perfectly fine to say JUST because Dream is the target. I’m being so serious when I say being a fan of this dude changes your perspective on the whole damn Internet and half the people on it.

For the question you asked at the beginning about false accusations: I feel if you are making a false accusation with completely malicious intent, you should face criminal charges. It's slander and defamation, about something very serious and for just the malicious purpose of ruining someone's life. Now, if you make a false accusation by a genuine confusion of events or something, I think you'd probably still have to face a consequence of some kind in order for my just mentioned opinion to be valid, but something less serious maybe. And you'd have to be able to prove that you didn't have malicious intent. This is such a murky, grey area and it's a really rough topic that I know not everyone will agree with me on, but there are a lot of false accusations made all the time for different reasons a) they're mentally ill and were never touched at all, b) they were assaulted but have no idea what happened and maybe blacked out so they pinned it on someone, c) they were convinced it was that person etc. This is a generalization of course, but every time a false accusation is made, that adds another bucket of water to the tank of assault cases and it's drowning the real ones.

honestly, love your fresh view on these things. people on the internet forget so often that everyone else is as complex a person as they are. they forget or refuse to allow the other person humanity. I have seen so many people call him, or others a monster, demonizing them and denying them humanity. as a german, and the cultural and historic background that comes with that, that has always made me incredibly uncomfortable. no one should be denied being human. it makes it seem justified and right to hurt them, because they 'deserve' it, because they are 'monsters'. it's used to justify rape threats, death threats, doxxing, stalking, etc... i view (or try to view) everything through a similar lense as you. I try to ask myself "why do they do this? what made them like this? how can we help them not to do it ever again?", like I would with children. again, thank you so much for your fresh view.

(veryyyy long comment sorry, so long in fact I had to split it into a second comment as a reply, but I'm really passionate about this so felt I could try to give some context, if anyone cares): Why does the internet hate dream? Some other people in the comments have touched on aspects of this trend, but I'm going to do my best to touch on every aspect I can, cus it's something that's hard to understand if you haven't been in the space to see it yourself the past 4 or so years. I think one the most important things to clarify going into this is that, while his audience is mostly male, his "core" fanbase (people who make fan accounts, buy merch, interact on twitter, do fanart, go to meetups, etc etc) is mostly femme and/or queer. We'll get into why I think this is in a sec. Let's start at the beginning: Dream entered the creator field as a white, college aged guy, who seemed to be straight and did gaming. Later we would find out he was raised conservative. Several of his initial videos had things to do with Pewdiepie's minecraft series, someone who I would say has a mostly male, slightly right leaning, or at the very least very "normie" audience, especially before 2020. He was coming off the backs of the last wave of minecraft creators, who mostly had strong negative opinions of fan and "stan" culture. Generally, the expected outcome of this is a mostly white, cishet audience of young boys. But that didn't exactly happen. Instead, some--slightly conflicting--behaviors emerged from him early on in his career (more context, he started his current channel at 19). 1) He was VERY opinionated and VERY reactive. Both when it was deserved and when it wasn't (The community jokes about how he should "let 2020 dream out of the cage" when fans think someone's being unfair towards him lol). There were a handful of situations where he was rightfully called out for certain things, and his initial responses varied on how good they were. Sometimes he would be told something was hurtful or offensive and he would respond receptively immediately. And sometimes he would argue when he really shouldn't have, only reigning it in a little later and apologizing. An issue he acknowledged he had and was working on at the time, probably due to a mix of rsd and blowing up so quickly, that much attention so quickly set him up to fail in certain ways. This caused some tension both from people who found the times he would be so argumentative in situations where it wasn't appropriate offensive, and thus wrote him off immediately as a standard gamer dude who didn't care about minorities etc. And from other malicious people who realized he was easy to get a reaction out of, or from people who don't like confrontational people in general, or felt it was an irresponsible use of his platform (people like to say he "sends stans" after people cus he replied to haters a lot). 2) He was, and still is, realistic about his own skills and success. He is VERY good at minecraft (to be clear, he was at the time an incredibly good speedrunner. He had several world records and would go back and forth for the first place title with other people before the cheating scandal. Which was only on a 5th place run. All his actual records are legit, but can't be counted anymore because of that 5th place run), and he became successful VERY quickly. Both things he doesn't downplay like others might. He isn't over-confident in my opinion, but the way he was and is very matter-of-fact about his abilities rubs some people wrong (especially other creators in the sphere, who might’ve seen a newbie getting ahead of themselves. For example: he developed this sort of one-sided rivalry with a creator generally considered one of the best at the game in certain areas-Technoblade. They would later become friends and this rivalry became mutual lol. But I think some people didn’t like it initially, as it could come across as presumptuous). I believe this is where the idea he’s arrogant comes from, something that carries over unfairly in other areas. He said in the vid you watched that he doesn’t consider himself very attractive, or very funny. People still came away from that vid calling him “self obsessed” for how he dresses and that he posts photos of himself lol. And 3) He was VERY adamant about his stance on fan, and more specifically, stan culture. Dream was one of the very very few large creators, especially male, at the time in the space who called out some of the issues with the attitudes towards stan culture. While he said in the vid you watched his position has shifted, especially after the face reveal and what he’s dealt with since the allegations, some of the sentiments he expressed I think are still very important and he seems to generally agree with still. Mainly, that a lot of the demonization of stan culture comes from misogyny. Obsessive fan culture is not healthy when it gets to a point, but people talk about “stans”, especially 4-5 years ago, in a very pointed way. A hardcore sports fan wasn’t being called a “stan” in the same way k-pop fans were, for example. Boy band fangirls are cringe and obsessed and gross, men who break property over football are normal. The double standard is rooted in misogyny, which he pushed back against by pointing out how his own fanboy-tendencies towards football were similar to parts of stan culture. Dream was very unique in his embracing of fan culture. He would set boundaries and call out his fans when he felt there were issues, but he was a pretty hardcore defender of stans. And other areas of fan culture were readily embraced, like shipping. You expressed a very common sentiment that fanfiction and stuff of real people is weird. Totally understand this opinion, it’s something that most creators don’t like for valid reasons, and is usually done in fanbases of creators against their boundaries. Definitely weird then, that shit requires consent. But Dream didn’t give a shit, and still has loose boundaries around this. Him and his closest friends don’t mind shipping, or fanfiction, etc. In fact, that nsfw boundary is new. He was always against nsfw content created by or involving minors, but up until the end of 2023 he was fine with nsfw content of himself (explicit fanfic, for example) created by/for adults. It’s entirely understandable why he tightened up this boundary recently. But he’s still fine with things like shipping/fanfic as long there is a clear line between fiction and reality. This near complete embracing of fandom and everything it involved caused a lot of disapproval. And so immediately because of these things, paired with his insane rise in fame, he was controversial. The last point is the biggest one to consider though. Because of his embracing of fan culture of that nature, he garnered that core femme/queer fanbase I mentioned. This is the biggest root of things. He became a safe space, of sorts, for people who are most likely to engage in “fandom” the way pop culture generally thinks of it. So he created a huge influx of female/queer audiences to places where they weren’t really present before in large numbers, like twitch. This shift something some female creators have talked about, like pokimane. For all intents and purposes, he SHOULD have been a creator who had another vaguely right-leaning fanbase who made edgy jokes and was the perfect entry point to the right-wing pipeline. But then his embracing of fan culture created that different demographic, and then as a consequence of that different audience, he was called out more for things other creators could get away with. His audience, and his increasing willingness to learn, shifted him even further away from any past conservative ideas he may have held and created someone who openly denounced old right-wing or offensive things from his past and listened to his core fanbase. He wasn’t an activist by any means, but one of the biggest people in the gaming space welcomed a marginalized fanbase and went through the last bits of his deprogramming from conservatism very publicly. The people who expected the opposite REALLY REALLY didn’t like this. Suddenly, alt right people who were comfortable lurking in the gaming sphere due to the previous nature of it, were being challenged as part of the primary demographic. This was a betrayal. He SHOULD’VE turned into one of them. He SHOULD’VE fallen deeper down his pipeline. They missed the “old dream” when “dream was cool”, you can find them lamenting on reuploads of edgy jokes he made as a teenager long since deleted/denounced that he isn’t like that anymore. Instead he became the biggest creator in his field, and was a threat. This was why he became a target for Kiwifarms. The neonazis there started a concerted effort to destroy his career. They would do everything possible to hurt him and his fans, digging into his past, doxxing (early doxxes are riddled with racism and homophobia-he was perceived as queer by these people even before he came out, due to the things already mentioned and the way he was very flirty with male friends. He once spoke-before his coming out-about how it was crazy how many slurs he got called online despite not being lgbt. A quote from a 2020 dox, for example, “When Dream started playing minecraft his ego got checked like a black person getting ‘checked’ with a loaded shotgun to the head by police”), etc etc. The best microcosm to demonstrate this trend was what happened when he did finally start going through his sexuality journey, and publicly came out as not straight on twitter. A very old joke about the kkk from when he was like 15 was dug up and blasted across twitter within a day or two. They do things like this because it’s a way to punish him for straying from conservatism and his past, to hurt that marginalized fanbase he’s cultivated and attempt to turn them against him---

Many people see the things this hate campaign blast out about him, false or otherwise, and come to dislike him because of that without understanding the sources info comes from, or why/when things are fabricated or dug up. He also serves as a convenient scapegoat for performative liberals, who refuse to let him change from his past and can serve as someone to put any guilt about their own bigotry onto. The speedrun scandal was the biggest thing that created an avenue for more normal people to access the hate campaign, it's the perfect entry point, something innocuous that made people more willing to consume and spread info the hate campaign would put out. There are people who, of course, have valid reasons to dislike him (he may have changed from his past, but it still exists). He’s a human after all, and is as deeply flawed as all of us. Many of these flaws of his very public. But the larger online hate train can almost always be sourced back to kiwifarms, and a general disapproval from the gaming space of his core audience of “14 year old girls with dyed hair and pronouns” as people liked to stereotype, and is how things became as intense as they are now.

the shortest explanation is the virulent hate campaign that spawned in like 2020ish. it started when he was doxxed on kiwifarms, social media is a hivemind. especially on twitter which is like a nightmare game of telephone. so few ppl actually care to look into things. it’s really sad. I think a lot of people think they hate him bc of rumours but they don’t really know anything about him. and it sucks because every time we fans have just simply tried to correct misinformation we just get accused of being delusional or parasocial 🫠

Well said. I definitely agree him embracing fan culture helped so much, the way he played along with the dnf thing and clarified it wasn’t real but still seemed to find it funny definitely added to this. I was in the fandom starting at the very beginning of 2021 and I feel like most of us thought he was just this very chill guy because he was a safe space for lgbtq/fem people, the Dream smp as a whole definitely was. Especially during lockdown when a lot of us had nothing better to do it made total sense that his fandom grew so insanely when we were being fed with entertainment from a community we felt welcome in because Dream and his server were accepting of that in a real way. To see the hate that Dream got was honestly insane. The people hating on him either were maliciously calling the fandom and him cringe or were totally uninformed about what Dream was accused of and what his response was. So many liars made some of the info hard to find but there’s no excuse for how people latched immediately onto any accusation and never gave Dream a chance to defend himself. You also nailed it about them being obsessed with all of his mistakes that he made as a child or young teenager that he had given apologies for and views he stopped aligning with. Of course not everyone has to forgive him but Dream was not allowed to step a foot out of line while blowing up so quick and being unequipped to deal with the disproportionate amount of internet hate he received for anything and everything compared to other creators. I have other interests now so I don’t watch him or interact with his community anymore, I’m also not nostalgic or biased enough to say he never handled things poorly or made bad jokes before. He was reactive, immature and did make mistakes. Still, watching the Dream smp downfall and its aftermath as someone who used to be in this bubble, and doing my best to be educated on the situation and see other people’s perspective, I still think the hate campaign against Dream is insane and a little tragic. With the fatphobia and bullying he experienced after revealing his face, people swatting him and affecting his life in a very real way, his mental health and even more things he detailed in his response. The minecraft content creator space is truly so messy and full of drama, and it feels like it’s becoming worse even with drama unrelated to Dream. I wish people that had hated so obsessively had cared enough to look for solid evidence, to read Dream’s response and then form their own opinions instead of jumping on the bandwagon immediately. But I guess the internet never works that way. It’s quite dissapointing.

You asked why people hate dream and it's kind of hard to explain to someone who actually is understanding and compassionate. Twitter essentially has clouded people's sense of reality, a lot of what people spread about him just isn't true, some of which he clears up in this video. From day one pretty much he was being doxxed on Kiwi farms, exposing stupid things he did as a kid and old insensitive jokes he made at 16. Something that happens with most KZbinrs from that gaming space. Of course, he has apologised but it's held over his head more than any creator has ever had, it's like no one will give him the benefit of the doubt that he has changed since he was a dumb kid. A lot of what he says, even if he provides proof like in this video, it will be twisted into something it's not. Braindead people on Twitter already have a narrative they want to push for dream and nothing he will do or say will change that. They wanted there to be victims to justify the hate campaign. He's quite reactive and also over-explains himself which causes people to make fun of him or turn his words/intentions into something it's not. Dream is just like any other youtuber in my opinion. Nothing makes him especially evil. People just decided he was never allowed to grow from what he was raised to believe, yet other youtubers could? It's all very hypocritical in the minecraft space. Thank you for covering this video. Thank you for being a kind and understanding human. Glad I found a new fave youtuber out of this💗

In my head Dream is mostly known for speedrunning minecraft, minecraft manhunts, beating the world record for speedrunning but turns out he cheated, and creating the DreamSMP, which is a minecraft server in which top youtubers would play minecraft in. The DreamSMP turned out into this big roleplaying story with full story arcs in which all biggest minecraft players played in. Dream would play the powerful villain. There's also this DNF (dreamnotfound) shipping on AO3. Basically girls ship Dream and George romantically together and DNF was one of the top ship on AO3. But people also write platonic fanfics relating to DreamSMP lore (the story in DreamSMP). DreamSMP recently closed down due to people not getting along. From my understanding there's a huge community around this among young people.

i always thought that dream's actions in his early career made so much sense when you think about how he went from having basically no platform to having over 10 million subscribers over the course of a year and some. a lot of his hate even today comes from how reactionary he was, inexperienced with how to have such a large fanbase. ive always admired how he grew into who he is today, and felt bad that he had to do so through trial and error in front of the very public eye. he's just a guy. but people demonize him for being emotional and reactionary.

Oh thank god, someone who can be level-headed about Dream. Like, look-- I get people have different tastes, it's whatever. Like what you like. But the point where I, and anyone else who actually DOES like him/his content, start to take umbrage is when people get Weird about their dislike. It's literally at a point of such pointless toxicity that in certain circles, how you talk about Dream is a litmus test. Can they look at the evidence, or are they going to talk out of their ass because hating him will get them clout? If they claim to care about evidence and just use his name & hating him for clout, why the fuck should we pay attention to them? He's a human who has made mistakes and apologized for them. It's just that nobody cares about the apologies, because he's Dream. In my opinion, he's waaaay too forgiving of people who need to be held accountable for being assholes. For instance, the part where he apologized for airing out a thing with Quackity? Yeah, someone put trackers on cars belonging to his family. They, and he, were being stalked, harassed, and were in actual, PHYSICAL DANGER. This was over Minecraft servers that had concepts both involving live translation (and Dream's was shelved indefinitely due to the hared). These were fans of Quackity's. Dream spent a long time desperately trying to get in contact with him, or at least get him to make a generic "don't stalk/dox people" tweet-- aka the bare fucking minimum-- and instead...nothing. Nothing! Even after that tweet!! The cherry on top is that instead, not too long after (within a week or two, I believe) Quackity said "I'm so proud of my community". So, y'know. There's some bitterness in the circles I run in. And now it's coming out that Quackity abused his unpaid workers to the point where the French Union is getting involved, people (including actors playing key roles, which he's now trying to monetize the likeness of) have left or been left in limbo indefinitely. I bring this up because it's so INCREDIBLY frustrating to see a person that, genuinely, is a great role model, is being demonized for literally NOTHING. Or, maybe worse, for things he's apologized for and changed his behavior in response to. Nothing he does is ever good enough. He has been mocked for crying onstage about a song we wrote about Technoblade, a friend of his and another massive Minecraft content creator who died of cancer just a few years ago. He was in his early twenties and the internet at large mourned him, too. But because it's Dream, and Dream is cringe, it's cool to mock him for crying about his dead friend. That's the level of hatred he gets. That's why I, and other Dream fans, deeply appreciate someone who can actually look at what happened and see it outside of the lens of "Dream bad". I'll have to check out some of your other stuff-- I love essays! Funnily enough, they're great to watch while playing on a server with some friends of mine who are fans of Dream and his character, haha.

I saw a video of his "reaction" to Dream calling him out during that segment of the video, but Charlie didn't even bother to watch the video the whole way through and he doubled-down on his claim that Dream was fishing for younger viewers by posting those pictures, when at the very end of Dream's video segment involving Charlie, Dream's comparisons to Charlie's pictures were so spot on, but Charlie didn't even bother to watch it the whole way through. Also, it's ironic that Charlie would be the one to accuse Dream of posting thirst traps when several of his literal names he goes by online, are: "Greaseball," and "MoistCritikal" aaaaand, ... what is that common kink some people like? That's riight, rubbing their bodies with a type of oil or grease, hence his other names. It seemed ironically hypocritical for Charlie to basically project all of that onto Dream when Charlie should be looking deep into a mirror.

The reason why some people hate dream (especially in the commentary community) is because he's not good at keeping his stans on a leash. He's also not good at having boundaries, as shown in the video, so his fans are even more parasocial than normal. They'll harass anyone who talks bad about dream. This is especially bad because the minecraft community is notorious for being rabid. He's also just seen as cringe.

I do agree that people can be parasocial about him, both love and hate. However, you gotta understand-- people perceive his audience to be teenage girls. Teenage girls ain't allowed to have a single thing that's good in their lives. Dream doesn't openly talk shit about his audience, regardless of if they're teenage girls or not, and this is apparently a bad thing. Also, people literally get harassed for being a fan of him. Some people have been kicked/driven out of other streamers' fan communities and had hate or deliberately triggering things sent into their inboxes (one person I follow keeps chickens as pets that they love-- people have threatened to find them and eat their chickens! For being a Dream fan!!) ...on top of our guy being considering the internet punching bag that it's cool and understandable to make up grooming accusations about. Is it any wonder that some of us get a bit defensive? Just look at your own comment-- are you holding him to the same standard that you're holding other content creators to, both within minecraft and not? Or have you seen the harassment from Dream fans yourself-- and enough of it to make it a problem that is uniquely or excessively bad in this case? Or are you just buying into the "Dream is cringe, therefore he's bad" belief a little? You can like or dislike him as you please, for the record. I'm not going to police what people can enjoy for whatever reasons they might have. I just want to push back a bit on the belief that he's got rabid, unhinged fans who hate anyone who talks bad about him. Generally, we're just happy when people can be normal about disliking him. The bar is at "doesn't make hating him into A Huge Thing," and yet a staggering number of people can't even do that much.

@@brysonius Anything they like is either terrible garbage that should be nuked from existence or else they aren't "real" fans of it. If someone has an audience that is composed of teenage girls, they will usually talk shit about and mock them. If a teenage girl has an opinion, it's wrong or stupid or just ignored. They're too emotional (nevermind that being a teenager is Kind Of A Lot regardless of your gender), they're trying too hard and yet aren't aware of enough of what they're doing, they only care about boys, etc etc etc. Nothing is EVER good enough, not for most people. I know it can be hard to believe something like that if you haven't been in the trenches yourself. But, seriously-- if you have someone who you're close to that's a woman or who spent that time in their life as one, I'd suggest asking them if what I said is true. Or even just "are teenage girls allowed to like anything without being mocked for it". I don't think it's a coincidence that Dream's audience is seen as being mostly made up of teenage girls (regardless of if it actually does or not). I think because he doesn't condemn the teenage girls in his audience, it contributes to why he's Bad And Cringe.

@johnark4723 People still have this perception of Dream fans being a massive group of teenage girls who are expert doxxers and harass anyone who so much as looks at him wrong. Nope, they all joined the qsmp community. We're so much smaller in number now, and it's ridiculous to talk as though we have any power compared to other minecraft communities. Those of use who are left also aren't as young as everyone thinks. He got started 4 years ago and we've aged with him. He's not active enough for the community to be growing, and the ones who are left are mostly 18-24, and a good number of us are older than that. Yeah, he's not been great at establishing boundaries. He's 24. He blew up when he was 20. He's gone from 0 to 30 million subscribers in 4 years, of course he's going to have fans that are even more parasocial than normal, he has more fans than pretty much any other gaming youtuber. Of course some of them are going to do crazy shit. If you want to talk about parasocial stans that aren't kept on a leash, how about Quackity, whose fans are defending him for exploiting fan labour, making them work in an abusive environment, commissioning art that he never paid for? Or Tommy's fans who are there the instant Dream moves, looking for anything they can use to twist his words or paint him in a bad light. The amount of out of context clips they've edited and spread is exhausting and half the minecraft community piles on with them. It's popular to hate him, and it's so disproportionate to what he's actually done. The main reason we've been defensive this last year is because of people calling him a groomer and pedophile, mocking him for showing vulnerability (crying over a friend's death, pleading with someone to tell ask community to stop doxxing and harassing Dream's family), and the amount of death threats, SA threats, gore, deliberately triggering DMs and comments fans have gotten any time we talk a little too loudly. Even for doing normal fan things, like posting pictures of meeting him. There are multiple instances of fans posting pictures of their children meeting him and talking about how exited the kids were, and it's very wholesome until somebody says he's going to groom them or abuse them and it gets thousands of likes. Or the parody account with tens of thousands of likes on posts pretending to be Dream admitting to grooming, being a pedophile, etc. He's held to such a high standard, literally anything he does pisses people off and they find a new moral shortcoming to attach to him every month. He's been so dehumanised, and why? Literally what has he done to deserve that? Because he's cringe? So he deserves to be swatted, to needs his own private security at conventions? To have people praising and hoping for a shooting threat at an IRL event to be true and for them to kill him? None of us, literally NONE of us care if people don't like him or call him cringe, but my god, just treat him like a human being.

I personally dont like Dream. I think hes a weirdo who doesnt interact with his fanbase in the way he should, and I didn't like this video that much. Whether the accusations are real or fake I think the video he put out is a little... idk. manipulative. Disingenuinous. Very dramatic (the boom sound effects) and kinda dishonest editing The Nicolas section (comdeming Nic saying the F slur when he's a queer man, and he was supposedly in a manic episode bc of his bipolar) and doesnt take itself seriously, addresses points nobody really cares about anymore (the cheating stuff) and whatnot until we get to the allegations. The video before the serious bit feels like a "best of" reel to me, which will change your opinion on how seriously you take them. He also leaves out a lot of important things that i think needs to be addressed, like him saying he would donate every dollar he got while streaming in june to an LGBTQ charity before just...not ever streaming in June. He just does little shitty things every now and again and doesn't say anything abt it which kind of soured his character for me. The people he surrounds himself with arent very good people either (George in particular) so I think he's just an average person with bad tendencies who doesnt really need 30 million people looking at him. I don't think any KZbinrs in particular should be that popular unless they can handle it, and to me he's shown he cant. His fans generally sway to be around 13-16, and a lot of those younger ones just do not know how to conduct themselves, and he doesnt ever really establish boundaries with them, so they never really learn. IK fandoms will have those 'stans' where people just go to far bc they're young and anonymous and think it doesnt matter, just from my experience they are a little more on the wilder sides. all my opinion, as i grew up his content got more annoying and he seemed more childish to me, which made his content and actions hard to watch. None of this is me saying he IS a predator or anything, though lol this is cobbled together through multiple edits bc im trying to articulate my words a little better lol Edit: y'all this is just my opinion on him 😭 I don't like him and that's that... To ME he just feels manipulative and I don't want to engage with his content. Please don't convince me that he's actually a good person bc I don't fw him or the community anymore. To ME there's been too many bad experiences to justify the good ones. I'm engaging with different kinds of content so I can make sure I have a level head abt it 😭 im loving Brittany and her opinions and the way she engages with things. It wouldnt be a fair discussion if you just try and shut down every argument against someone you like 😭 again, she asked for peoples opinions

Actually- 1: he wasnt having a manic episode nicolas never said that - that was just excuses f4om people on twitter 2: youd be surprised how many people brough the fact he cheated as a point for the allegations to be true- or just bring it up as a point to hate him and burn him at the stake in general- 3: The whole june thing was adressed ages ago he didnt say he was streaming all june he did stream twice and donated 50k to lgbt charities- 4: most of his fans on twitter are adults actually you are most likely seeing dream stans talk about college or their kids than any other thing- the bitch has said a million times to not d0x people and to be kind to others and honestly i have seen more dream stans getting harrased to the point of people treathening their children and animals or people showing to their houses than the other way around in this like 2 years that i have interacted with that community-
