"Handles high grass without a problem." And without cutting it apparently.
@jessiejanson1528
@jessiejanson1528 8 жыл бұрын
It cut quite a bit of it, but all of these roam randomly for many hours every day. the point is you can drop it in tall grass and it wont get stuck and the grass will all eventually get mowed. Though seriously annoying that im having to defend this mower. No idea how there isnt something better then these "random" mowers.

Jessie Janson I agree, the random mow model (like Roomba's random vacuum model) is incredibly inefficient and low-tech.
@csgamer11
@csgamer11 8 жыл бұрын
That is true, but without excact position tracking its hard for it to keep moving perfectly, but yea advanced mowers that are not random should be doable with todays tech.

The idea is it will eventually after about a week get all the grass to the same height and then will only have to cut fractions of an inch from the grass blades each time thereafter. By having a random pattern, instead of back and forth or diagonal or whatever your regular pattern is, it avoids leaving track marks in the yard, for a uniform surface. I agree, it seems inefficient, but if its cutting while I'm sleeping, what do I care if it takes two hours or four?
@jessiejanson1528
@jessiejanson1528 8 жыл бұрын
power usage, and it breaks down faster that way. you can offset the pattern or adjust it on its own every time it mows so it wouldnt have to run over the same area every time. its basic programming.

This comparison is pretty unfair to me. I work with ZCS products for years, and both sound quality, slope inclination and performance are outstanding. There are special back to recharge options that leave no track either. There are spikes on the wheels that you can install and if climbs like a cat. In the noise test you can hear that the blade was bent and that is why it generates such a noise. Whoever made the test was aiming at presenting only one model in a good light, and had no idea about other machines features and programming features.DO not belive it at all. I challenge you!

robofarma Yep. At the end of the video it discloses "Produced for Husqvarna AB" followed by Husqvarna's web address, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt. It conveniently leaves out that the Husqvarna didn't successfully cut the tall grass and doesn't show all of each mower's results. Robomow was the only one where it showed how well/badly it cut next to the pole. I doubt the Husqvarna would have done better, the grass was too tall for any mower to get over while being against a pole.

robofarma Yeah, I knew it was going to be biased just be the title. I am sure this promo was made by Husqvarna. They do however appear to have a good product, despite the skewed tests. As Garrett Williams points out below though, they conveniently left out stuff. You can also tell by the design of the Husqvarna and the large gap between the blades and the edge of the mower that it would leave a fair amount of trimming.

Wow, the Husqvarna Automower video caught my attention! As someone who has been searching for a lawnmower without perimeter wires, I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon the Segway Navimow robotic lawnmower. It offers unmatched convenience and efficiency compared to other brands. I highly recommend giving it a try for a hassle-free mowing experience.

I have one (not in this test and only avaliable in Sweden i guess) that mowes from 3 AM to 7 AM not even every morning. Always perfect result and I never have to see it work. It´s quiet, never needs petrol or hardly any service, just change the razors every two weeks or so, cost about 3 dollars for a change. I don't think I will not go back to pushing a roaring mower again.

I want to add to my older comment here: After almost 10 years the outer plastic started to crack near the front. This is mostly because I can't make wire loops around all the trees and whatnot (big garden) so there's a lot of bumping going on over the years. The plastic was repaired with fiberglass cloth and epoxy, which actually looks really great. The mower is now in service because the rotating dish with the blades has become quite noisy. I'll also have to get a new set of front wheels because the plastic has started to develop some holes from the thousands of hours of operation. The only real problems we had initially was a broken loop sensor. After ten years, this is the first time someone's had to replace or fix broken stuff. I'm thinking about upgrading to the latest model, but I'm kinda on the fence about that because I don't know if the new models are built as well as this one. They do look and feel quite a bit more sturdy than the one I ran for a decade here, but this is still quite a track record to beat.

I've had an Automower since 2005. It's an earlier model but the principles are the same, and I can confirm that this test is accurate. It still is one of the best robotic mowers you can get. Also if you think robotic mowers are just for lazy people, you probably don't have a large garden that takes 2+ hours to mow, even with a truck mower. This was the single best machine I've ever bought, and it recouped its cost many times over.
@emanuel12345678901
@emanuel12345678901 8 жыл бұрын
A bit biased the test. We have the stiga at work in a small garden (200m2 maybe). And it does a decent job. It sometimes gets stuck in the hedges, but that is the fault of the gardener for placing the wire too close or not trimming the hedge properly. It can handle those slopes but it needs either to have a dry soil or to install the teethed medal wheel extensions, that way it can fix itself into the ground. Sometimes due to the incline it might tilt back and the blade will not touch the ground, but it will come back and cut it properly. It does not leave wheel tracks as claimed here. In the video they show a freshly cut track in the edge, show after it finished cutting and then you can claim it leaves wheel tracks. Also, the most important thing of them all, price. How much does each one cost? I actually like the hushvarna, but I think it would cost way more than the rest

The thing is, a robotic mower should never have to handle excessively high grass except for maybe the first time you use it. It mows the grass so often it's really only taking about five millimeters off at a time.

I hate it when companies do these test because the product they are trying to sell they never mention the bad points about it always the good bits and they say all the bad things about the other products
@Steamrick
@Steamrick 8 жыл бұрын
+james birdsall The sad part is that they didn't need to falsely represent the other companies or choose products from a lower price point. The opposition is simply that bad. What I did notice however is that these are almost certainly the worst competitors on the market - I bet that other companies like Bosh and whoever else produces them would be at a much lower disadvantage vs Husqvarna. But also - from what I gather in other tests, the Husqvarna has no real weakpoints that aren't typical of all robot mowers anyhow (such as that the edges close to obstacles need trimming). My parents have a robot mower from back in 2005 (we're early adopters I think) and as old as it is, it would do better than half of the competition here! (Not sure how much of an angle it can take since my parents' lawn doesn't have more than maybe 20° slope at most but it's quieter than all but the Husqvarna and encounters maybe 1-2 errors a month if that.)

Nothing can replace a human eye.... Moreover the efficiency is very bad since they do not follow a path and method to cut,but just mow like zombies not knowing where they go.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 8 жыл бұрын
What i 'm doing here ? I don't understand. I doubt they record the path they use,to not use it again on the same cutting session. They just mow within a limited space without thinking. That mean they roll on the same spot several times or cross it randomly. It's a waste of energy and running time,wich is directly related to the owner's wallet for charging and maintaining it. It's inefficient just for those reasons. A human will think of a specific path,and will be way faster,wich can be a good thing for the wear factor at least.

Random pattern equals poor appearance. You never see golf courses or grass tennis courts mowed in random patterns...they love those nice straight even rows. And most of the ones I've seen tested do not do a very good job of mulching, either. Can't hold a candle to a Honda HRR216VKA or similar, for about $400. And since they are self-propelled, not a lot of effort is required. Can knock off a half acre lot in well under an hour, or a third of an acre under a half hour. And I can and will guarantee that the job I do with it will be clearly better and better-looking than a robotic cut. (Just call me the John Henry of lawnmowing, for those of you who know your folk music. Even when and if the robotics get faster, they still have the problems of patterns and poor mulching.)

The thing is, since these robotic lawn mower, moreover Robomow, are designed to mow a little off the top every time it passes by, there are no lines left on the lawn.Now that you've mentioned that, I think that's what a lot of people may be thinking. Unlike traditional mowers where you have to wait for the grass to grow then you can tell that the grass has been mowed and see those patterned lines, with Robomow there are no lines, just the fresh cut look all the time. - Giselle Sendra

well this was made 3years ago, you can buy a cheep robot lawnmower for under $1000 that works just fine. Though 3 years ago the automower was really top of the line. Still is, but just because of the way you control it all from your smartphone. Dont even need to go outside to look how its doing + the theft protection. But all cheep modern robot mowers do what this did.

I mean it does say at the very end that it was produced for Husqvarna AB. And I agree that there is probably some bias in the selection of the benchmark test conditions to favor their mower, but that's not a bad thing. They tell us that it was produced for them and we know that they are a company selling a product (really good products at that) and this is just highlighting the capabilities of their mower. I think you are dead on in saying it would be great to see some performance videos from the other manufacturers highlighting their products as well.

Husqvarna would need two guide wires in addition to the perimeter wire for my lawn. The guide wires become invisible so it is easy to accidentally cut into them. The Husquvarna blades wear out faster on twigs and apple trees are a no no. The salesman said my garden was unsuitable for a robotic mower and after two months fuffing about gave me my deposit back. I bought a second had Robowmow and it does the job fine. Very slopey and bumpy garden with lots of features. i.e. real world. My mower is a RS630

You faked the auto mower results, you used a normal push mower. The test was unfair, you used the Honda mimo because it was the weakest, you made the others look bad, you can add weights and wheel spikes to help all of these climb hills, the robomow was made to shred things like pine cones and acorns, and everything but the mimo and the auto mower could have handled the tall grass the auto mower just drove over it, flattened it, and mowed barely any of it.

@lindosland
@lindosland 8 жыл бұрын
Random works, that''s the simple fact, and it works as well as any other method. To mow in stripes you need accurate positioning beyond current GPS ability, and just relying on dead reckoning won't work because wheel slip makes them curve frequently. A robust machine takes more power - using sharp small blades minimises friction, and the fact that only the taller leaves of grass are cut on each pass means that although the mower might seem inefficient it is in fact able to use very little power compared to conventional mowers. A mower that mowed stripes conventionally would have to work a lot harder. I have one working - the simple fact is, it works, very well. Also, cutting from all directions is advantageous as grass that is knocked over one way is cut on a later pass the other way.
@7pdude
@7pdude 8 жыл бұрын
thank you very much for your reply. i totally understand your arguments but for me today's robot mowers still seem to be not more than a temporary solution. in my neighborhood we have many smaller lawn stripes with driveways in between and it wouldn't be possible to install the fence wire everywere. plus the mower would also mow the driveways wasting energy and cutting time where there's not a single blade of grass. the big ag tractors use an additional signal to the inaccurate gps which narrows down the precision to under an inch. with a lawn edge width of around 2 inches that would work just great.
@lindosland
@lindosland 8 жыл бұрын
That's interesting; what is a 'big ag tractor', do you mean farmer's tractors? Do you know how the additional signal works (I'm and electronics engineer and this seems to be a difficult problem). I have a very big garden in the UK countryside - 5 acres or about 20,000 sq metres set out like a park, with trees for easy maintenance. If I stopped mowing it would turn to jungle with brambles and bracken six feet high as it used to be, so the possibility of automated mowing is attractive to me as I get older (it takes eight hours to mow completely on a ride-on in which time I cover around 50miles of driving up and down and use four gallons of fuel!) I have one small robot so far which cost me £540 and is doing a great job on 1000 sq metres. I reckon it will manage 2000 sq m, so I need ten, or a big one! Even ten seems a possibility, given the work they will save me, but I'm debating whether to go for lots of cheap ones (less upsetting and disruptive if one gets lost or fails) or a big expensive one which I will worry about more.
@7pdude
@7pdude 8 жыл бұрын
yep, big agriculture tractors or farm tractors like john deere 8R series, fendt vario 900 series and so on. i'm not very much into the whole topic nor am i an actual user of this technology but in the context of being a software developer that's what i've understood so far about these systems: the tractors receive their rough location via standard gps. but then they also take additional stational antennas into account to narrow down the precise location to under an inch. these additional antennas can be portable ones on simple tripods but the more sophisticated ones are mounted mostly on buildings just like cell phone towers. these systems go by the name RTK (short for real time kinematic). with systems like ntrip the tractor may even lose contact to the rtk antennas for up to 20 mins which normally gets it out of any dead zone in time. setting up this additional infrastructure can be quite expensive, too expensive for a single farmer. therefore it's often the ag dealers who provide the rtk infrastructure. to my knowledge there's no end-user lawn robot anywhere out there nor have i heard yet of any manufacturer planing on building or even just thinking of one that makes use of additional rtk signals. however farmers and large garden owners would benefit mutually of a good rtk infrastructure. and since the big lawns and the big farms are often more or less neighbors (at least i don't know of any big lawns in city centers ;-)) they would make a great couple. you may also search for a video with the title "GPS Video 2 - RTK" for some illustrated info about rtk.

I notice the comparisons did not feature the Ambrogio which is probably the best mower brand out there by far - I wonder why? Take a look at comparisons on you tube for the Husky vs Ambrogio...You see a totally different result.

i appreciate the post. I think the quality of information is unmatched. I feel compelled to request for voice narration. Please consider voice narration, its awesomeness. Write the script, voice the tracks and then match up the video to the voice track. It works really well. thanks for the information of these mowers.

No, it doesn't work like that. You cannot control Automower like RC car. You can only give commands: Start mowing, Stop mowing" and Go back to charging station. Additionally you can change almost every setting (including cutting heigt), open map and check mower's posion. There is also theft warning system.

Certainly this demonstration was not unbiased and was slanted to favor Husquavarna. It's still impressive though. The other robo-mowers appear to be more yuppie toys than useful tools. A robo-mower could be a good choice for someone who normally pays someone to cut their lawn, or for those who hate mowing it themselves.

I have a big pine tree at the end of my lawn,with cones and droppouts from magpies nests. Can the Robomow cut these to pieces, instead of moving around it?
@BartCrijns
@BartCrijns 9 жыл бұрын
Ragnar Knestang Robomow should handle those just fine. My personal experience with a RS630 is that it doesn't have any problems with small branches falling from trees. No first hand experience with pine cones, but they shouldn't present a problem. Also, longer grass (at least 10cm above cutting height) doesn't present any problems. In the beginning of the mowing season, I let it loose on grass that had some patches of almost 20cm high grass and 25cm high weeds (with a cutting height of 6cm) and when I returned after a week, the lawn looked like a golf court.

They should put those lawn mowers in real grass, say 4-6" high and see how they do. I take my 42" Snapper Yard Cruiser and mow my front, back and side of my yard in 20 minutes, blow it off with the air compressor and put it up. Robot mowers sound good if you are in the business of selling them.
