I'm a retired eye surgeon and I like your explanation of SMILE: "Some laser does some crazy shit." That's about right! When folks would ask me about LASIK I'd tell them: "Yeah, so this machine sucks onto your eyeball and cuts the top of your cornea ALMOST off like a baloney slicer, then a laser grinds out some of the insides, and then it rinses off the loose grit and lays the baloney slice back onto the wound and it just sticks on with water tension and heals slowly and hopefully you won't ever get punched in the eye or that slice might tear off." (Also, I did retina surgery, not corneal procedures, and I was never EVER going to get LASIK myself because that baloney slicing thing was nasty. I absolutely agree SMILE is a far far safer way to go, but it came out after I left practice, and now I am too old for refractive surgery.) Your description of the alien abduction is hilarious; I've never heard anyone describe it like that! Anyway, I'm glad you are taking your drops and have had a positive experience and will be able to see the clock at night. Isn't living in the future wonderful?! Love it!

I got a fourth kind of eye surgery last year! It's called an ICL, where the surgeon makes a tiny incision in your lens and then inserts a permanent contact lens behind your natural lens. Each eye had to be done in two separate surgeries a week apart so I had incredibly wonky vision for a week. But it's been so life-changing! I had the most ridiculous prescription EDIT: I forgot to add that the lens can be taken out so the surgery is reversible unlike a lot of other options!

I had LASIK twice on November 2002 and March 2003. I had to do it twice because I was in the tiny percentile of people who had complications. I was undercorrected the first time and had to wait 3 months for the incision to heal before they could go in again and finish. Out of all the complications one could have, mine was the most desirable. After the second correction, I was better than 20/20 and have remained so for almost 20 years. I was told I might need reading glasses I'm my late 30s to early 40s but I'm already past that and I can see fine up close. Both my procedures hurt like there was salt in my eyes for a week. I couldn't touch my eyes for 4 weeks after. The 2nd hurt much worse than the 1st. I still recommend it to anyone who qualifies.

I could NOT see immediately afterward, which freaked me out and I faked it when a nurse asked if I could see. 😂 I was instructed to go home and sleep, which I did for for 14hrs. The next day I woke up and could read the street sign outside my window 😮. Had some dryness but it didn’t last long. I did have starburst effects, but it was better than wearing contacts. I also had smile about 1.5 ago and yeah technologies are insane nowadays. Especially since like my mom was allowed to have lasic like years ago when i was little and she was so upset about that. So when i was at a consultation they were like your eyes have too thin thing for lasik and i was like well that was too good to be true and then they suggested another option, and like i expected it to bee much more expensive since the case wasnt that easy but it turned to be quite fine. Recovery took me longer than you i woul say plus i had eye pressure to be held under control for like half a year. But the doctors were really amazing from the beggining till the end, especially when during the surgery the doc commented and explained everything they were doing. I kinda laughed that every sentence was ending in " dont be afraid" but like that was super cool. I had some light sensetivity but it left after some time. And this summer i was just once again amazed how they work onto your eyes for like a minute per each and then you can see like what. I decided to go after a person from uni did the surgery and i like i know that person and i was like if she managed to go through so could i haha. I needed some laser thing 2 weeks like before the thing to ensure everything goes smootly later but it wasnt painful or anything. Though this stuff differes for everyone ofc. It was also kinda funny to find out i have pupils of different size and also that not everyone has this slight halo effect when u look at like some light thing in the darkness haha it is not annoying or anything i just didnt know not everyone has that So yeah thanks for coming to this ted talk hahaha and i'm really glad for you to have done the thing:) Everyone who considers the thing honestly dont be afraid, it would be fine, technologies are wild nowadays and they can work with more difficult cases then before:)

I had LASIK in 1998 and my vision was 650 diopters (or power as you said). I literally couldn’t see my hand clearly a few inches in front of my face. I remember waking up the next day and being amazed at seeing trees outside clearly. I quickly learned how to do my own eye drops which I couldn’t do before but I was super motivated. The surgeon said some people are aggressive healers and their eyes may go overboard in healing in response to the surgery. I was that way a bit and ended up with 20/40 vision when everything was healed. Included in the cost was a follow up surgery if needed. I had that done and my surgeon opted to leave one eye undercorrected which meant when others my age were getting their reading glasses I wouldn’t need them for another 10 years. With 20/40 vision I got glasses just for driving and really only needed them for rainy days or night driving. While healing from LASIK in the first year I remember that street lights had a halo around them. In black light my irises glow possibly from the incisions and laser treatment. I think I paid about $2000 to get both eyes done and could claim it on my taxes so received reimbursement from that. Naturally the Canadian government has made changes to regulations since then so you get very little reimbursement now. I was so glad I got it done and it was like a miracle to have 10 minutes max essentially correct my very bad vision. I had worn glasses since 7th grade.

Thank you for sharing your journey, this was truly informative and would love to see your follow-up visit. You are amazing!

So happy for you!! I have a question: can SMILE be done with astigmatism?
@elekay3122 жыл бұрын
Yay! So happy for you! Also, probably a savings if you add up the cost of contacts, solution, glasses…etc that YOU DON’T NEED ANYMORE!!

I had LASIK done 20 years ago in Istanbul! Stayed in Istanbul for 5 days. The second day I got my procedure done in about 10 minutes and in the evening..WOW! Had 20 20 vision directly and went out for diner, the next day check up and sightseeing Istanbul ❤It’s a miracle what they can do and I highly recommend! Like you said, best money ever spend. Being able to swim without the hassle of contact lenses and being able to see my clock when I just wake up, priceless!

I've had many opthalmologist appointments and test and maybe One day I'll be able to have something like this, since it's less invasive and easier to heal from. that's amazing information! you remember everything so well. you did great!

Ciao Alex! Got PRK this April and it was the most life changing decision I've ever made! I can relate with the happy tears cause being able to see after 20 years of wearing glasses and uncomfortable lenses is the BEST feeling!

How was your healing with PRK? I’ve had lasik but now i need PRK. Does the healing hurt? How long does the healing take?
@martinacasati86412 жыл бұрын
Right after the procedure and the following 4/6 hours it wasn't painful.. it got way worse after 8 hours and I spent the following 24 in the dark, wearing sunglasses and keeping my watery eyes closed. Nevertheless, I would still do it again 100%

Doc Question: What are the negative long term effects? Omg, I was considering getting Lasik because I'm so tired of putting contacts every day. Hopefully, I'm a candidate for SMILE.

Wow that’s awesome, I never heard of that procedure, do they say how long it lasts ? Your videos and tutorials are the best, been a long time follower and I was wondering if you ever did or used Daniel Sandler’s watercolor liquid blush? I love them and all I do is shake the little bottle, add 3 drops on the back of my hand, take a blush brush and swirl it around, and tap on the cheek bones….the reason I ask, is I don’t see anyone reviewing it….thanks again !😊

I got PRK last month, and the giddiness of being able to see the nurses faces as soon as I sat up from the table was incredible. I started with -7 and -7.25 with a small astigmatism, so it was an amazing difference to actually SEE.

Also, thank God for the Xanax. I had a very similar experience to what you describe, but the doc messed with my eye first, before the lasering. And I was doing totally fine until about halfway through the first eye when I had the realization that he was removing my epithelium with probably a scalpel. Then I had a small internal panic moment. It's not like I didn't know what was going to happen, I just hadn't put it together. 😆

Isn't it amazing, how soon following the procedure, you can see far away???? I sat up and read the clock!!!! And, I'm just saying, eye surgery is as close to 'A Clockwork Orange' as I everrrrr want to get!!!! So glad everything went well!! This was a great video!! Blessings to you, Alex!!! ✌🏼💚🙏🏼

I had Lasix in January this year and I agree that it is the best $$ I have spent!. I am in Canada and my surgery was just under $4000 Canadian. I had an astigmatism in both eyes, pretty significant in the left eye and barely there in the right. My left eye was a -5.25 and the right was a -2.75 (I think). The whole time in the "OR" was 10 minutes and a lit if that was the doctor setting up and answering my questions. I was not given any medication to relax but I was given stress balls to squeeze. The machine I was in sounds similar to yours. Prior to my procedure they verified my prescription, took images of my eye and put in numbing drops. The procedure was so quick on both eyes ... maybe 1-2 minutes. They taped one eye shut and then held my other eye open with the clamp thing and had me stare at really bright lights. I then had my vision black out for a couple of seconds, I think that is when they cut the flap. The blacked out vision just seemed like I had my eyes closed (didn't freak me out at all). There was a bit of pressure to my eye but not painful. My biggest stress was me thinking some how I would move my eye and mess it all up. After they did the correction with the laser they put more drops in and then it felt like they took a big cold wet spatula and ran it down my eye from top to bottom. That was then closing the flap. Then they tapped that eye shut and did the same thing on the left eye (right eye was done first). The left eye felt like it was faster but I did feel more pressure. They said that it was normal because the brain knows what to expect. After the left eye they had me keep both eyes closed for a few moments and then sat me up. I did feel a bit dizzy after sitting up but I think it was because I sat up with my eyes shut. Once my feet touched the floor I was fine. I could see right away but there was a bit of a cloudiness to my eyes. Made me think of how my contacts would get if I cried with them in. I was told to put the provided sunglasses on and was then led back to the darkened waiting room, sat with my eyes closed for a few moments. The nurse put eye drops in and then after 5 minutes put another set of drops in. I was then led back to the main waiting room. I stayed there with sunglasses on and eyes closed for maybe 30 -45 minutes. The numbing drops started to come out and that was the most pain of the whole thing. It felt like I fell asleep with contacts in and that my eyes were dried out and stinging. They put more drops in and then looked at my eyes to ensure that the flaps were already healing. I was told that I needed to wear the sunglasses until my appointment the next morning (7:30am). I was supposed to avoid bright lights and tv/phone/computer screens for the remainder of the day of surgery. I had to put anti-inflammatory drops and lubricating eyedrops in my eyes every hour till I went to sleep. The anti-inflammatory drops gave me a bitter post nasal drip (bitter tasting like crushed up Tylenol). My vision was clear for most of the evening (the cloudiness went away after a few hours) and I went to sleep around midnight. Woke up around 2:45 with super dry eyes but felt better with the lubricating eye drops. My eye lashes were pretty crusty/stiff as I wasn't supposed to rub my eyes. At my appointment at 7:30am the next day I had 20/20 in one eye and 20/15 in the other. I was cleared to drive right away and only needed to wear the sunglasses when I was outside or in a windy or dusty environment for the following 3 days. I had to use the antibacterial eye drops and anti-inflammatory drops 4 times a day for the following 5 days. The lubricating eye drops I was supposed to use at minimum 4 times a day for the following 5 days but could use more as needed. Total of drops was 3 types. The lubricating eye drops I did use often as I was working a job where I was on the computer for 8 hours each day. By 3 months I was barely using the lubricating drops. I know only use them occasionally. My cousin recommended that I use Candor Vision Hylo lubricating eye drops. Not sure if they are available where you are but even though they are expensive they are a game changer!! They are the best eye drops that I have ever used!! I highly recommend them. The lubricating drops that the Lasik clinic gave me made my eyes a bit blurry for a bit after putting the drops in. The hylo ones seemed to clear way faster and I used them less often. Another perk of the hylo drops is that they are preservative free! Glad to hear that everything went well for you! It really is great to be able to see as soon as you open your eyes with no scrambling to find glasses of being able to swim without worrying about losing a contact!! One thing you could have the doctor answer would be what happens if you need another correction in the future.

id love to know how smile works for astigmatism with high power (-4.5/-5.5). also, does the procedure cause floaters? i’m afraid i’ll be sensitive to chemical sunscreen and more sensitive to cold/wind without contacts. i would love the follow up video! i’m so excited, since this is something i’m seriously considering in the near future. OH! last question-when you get older and your up-close vision starts to go, can you have that corrected, particularly if you had lasik/smile in the past?

I manage a facility which provide these treatments. Also a surgical assistant and assisted alongside 4 of these this morning! My advice is to use your lubricant drops anyway, even if you don’t feel you need too. They can be preventative and therefore stop you becoming dry down the line! Around 4x a day is good. Enjoy your new vision!!

Double commenter, sue me, but I also want to say getting this made me feel even stronger how it should be available to EVERYONE FOR FREE it is wild that we can REPAIR someone's eyes and we just don't because its a way for private companies to make money.

Congrats! I definitely want to get LASIK. I was quoted $1,300 from my local place (in Missouri) but, as you said, longer recovery. I will have to check out SMILE near here.
