Interviewer to Prince: "Last question: Who was the greatest band ever ?" Prince: "OH that's easy , Led Zeppelin. They didn't have one song that sounded like another song of theirs, nor anyone else's. The drums on this song are so huge definitely one of their best songs and to think it's 11 minutes of just pure 🔥
@henriettaskolnick44452 жыл бұрын
This song is a reworking of the gospel song by Blind Willie Johnson. Jimmy is using a slide on the guitar for the entire song which gives his guitar that filthy, fat gritty, growling and spitting tone. The drums are aggressive, almost violent and the bass is menacing. This song started out as a jam for them that they built and layered. The improvisation meant they didn't have an ending for it so when Robert pauses at the end, it was because he didn't know what type of ending phrase to put on it. When Bonzo coughs, he says something like "Oh that's gotta be the one" meaning, that's got to be the take they're going to keep, and the engineer in the booth asks him to come have a listen and Bonzo replies "Oh yes, thank you." It's bits like that that make you feel like a fly on the wall listening to this greatness be created. I am SO THRILLED you're going to start from the beginning and learn their entire catalogue! You're guaranteed not to miss a thing that way!

What a great job of doing this traditional song their own way. They did make things louder in their covers, but don't be deceived - it's more than volume. Volume played a role, but it had to support the feeling tone of the songs and increase those feeling tones because of other nuances. Sheer emotion may have had more to do with it than volume, but they worked well together.

I'm sure I'm late informing you, but Jimmy played the song with a slide. Which if you're not familiar with, is just a short section of pipe, glass etc. It started mainly with old Delta blues players, using bottle necks, which I personally don't like, I use a coricidin bottle, ( I'm sure I spelled that wrong.) It's a medicine for colds I think, Duane Allmann used the bottle from his prescription to learn slide while recovering. When I was younger he was my favorite slide player, so I copied him, probably had better options, anyhow that, with his effects, overdrive etc. Is what you hear. Check out The Allmann Bros. Statesboro Blues. Duane playing slide. It's a good song to start a great band. I think it's originally Taj Mahal's song, or maybe Willy Dixon? Not 100% sure. The original Southern Rock band, though I'm sure they considered themselves much more and are. Jimmy page used slide on quite a few songs. You Shook Me is the first one that pops in my head
