Geddy Lee, bass player for "Rush" was a huge fan of Chris Squire, bass player for "Yes". The last 5 seconds of La Villa Strangiato released in 1978 are almost identical to the last 5 seconds of "Everydays" released in 1970 by "Yes".

People throw around “roller coaster” all the time but that song really is like one! Starts off even and slow, and then you just drop in and hang on lol. It jerks from side to side, tumbles you down, whips you round corners…the only thing that’s thankfully not like a coaster is the end, because if you stopped that suddenly you’d fly out of the car and into the log flume next door.

Zay, I was lucky enough to see Rush at the NY state fair probably 8 or so years ago. Absolutely fantastic! Rush is one of the very few bands that has stood the test of time, as in their newer albums hold up to their older work. Not many older bands could do that. "YYZ" by them will literally blow your brain cells.

This was based on some nightmare that guitarist Alex Lifeson was having. It is in multiple parts including Monsters. It begins with the light falling asleep flamenco guitar and ends abruptly just as if you woke up from a nightmare sitting straight up and looking around to see if it was real.

Now you see why we couldn’t have a favorite band in the 70’s. There were too many excellent bands! You just picked the band you listened to by how you were feeling at that time. While I have never been a big fan of Geddy’s voice, the musical expertise of the three gentlemen was incredible. They sounded exactly the same live…the sign of a great band that didn’t need studio production to achieve their sound.

So blessed to have been a teen in the 70's and a fan of Rush since the first album.. and getting to see them 4 times in the late 70's, early 80's live... unmatched. Best band ever! #RushArmy It's so great to be able to watch you discover the music of my youth... it really was an amazing time in the world of music. Recommendations? Start with album 1 (even though this isn't Neil Peart (pronounced Peert, not Pert) there's some songs definitely worth hearing from this album and then just work your way through 40+ years of discography. Personally my favorite Rush music is the 70's into the early 80's.. but I have found quite a few songs after that period I really do like... even though they were more commercialized/radio feeling for the most part (to me, my opinion, everyone has one right?). But the very LAST SONG ON THEIR VERY LAST ALBUM brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, it's simply beautiful. Yes, I'm purposely not dropping song names so you can research and listen to them all... the list would be very long if I started naming songs you don't want to miss. Rush Fans will be here for it if you go down this amazing rabbit hole!

Listen to the original studio cut of "Working Man" from 1974. It will blow you away. Then listen to the live video for "Working Man" (Live in Cleveland 2011 Time Machine Tour), which they play at the END of a 3-hour show 37 years later. It will gather all your blown-away bits, put them back together, and blow you away again even more. Other live videos to see: YYZ (Live in Rio), Xanadu (1981 Exit...Stage Left tour), Where's My Thing/Here It Is! (with drum solo, live in Dallas). In my humble opinion this one the very top songs in progressive rock. Right up there with Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd and Roundabout by Yes. It's on another level for sure. Grand masters of their instruments and of studio engineering.

I got to see Rush during their Moving Pictures tour in 1981. They are an amazing live band who can play their songs note for note as though you were listening to the studio version. This was a double Canadian shot since April Wine opened up for them. Great concert

Dude, I discovered that you played college hoops man that is so cool. This is a difficult composition for most people to wrap their heads around including the band members of Rush who at one point said it was one of the most difficult things they ever attempted. But I'm so glad you enjoyed it man you were tracking along with it every second and just totally got it. I don't know what role you play in the college ball but you know you can liken it sometimes to the way this kind of really amazing music is put together. It is certainly a team effort. And if you ever take a different route or maybe even at the same time although probably later in life I would say, definitely check out being a musician, it seems like you are instinctively already in that direction.

Crazy ride, written about a recurring nightmare Alex had. Like most bad dreams, it starts out light and airy, restful, then goes dark, ebbing and flowing between the dark and light, and again, like most dreams, ends before it's concluded. Stopping mid-bar as they did was musical genius! You get the sense of being jerked awake in the middle of the drama as the song is building and then just stops. SO GOOD! Peart puts on a clinic on drums, running through some of his jazzy chops; you could almost be entertained listening to only his work on the cymbals alone. Like most Rush tunes, both Alex and Geddy play multiple instruments as well as put some well-placed effects on them as they play. They're all virtuoso and "tight" doesn't even begin to describe them.

La Villa Strangiato: An Italian/Spanish mashup loosely translating to "The Strange House," this was said to have been inspired by a dream that Alex, the guitarist (I think it was his) had had one night. Let me just say, if this is a Strange House, sign me up for a house tour! Also, that sound at around the 4:50 mark wasn't thunder, that was just Neil applauding your choice for today's reaction.

The unexpected fact there was thunder on your side(pun intended) was a Godly timing for your listening experience - for the audience that is, too bad you couldn't catch it through your headphones because it could not have come at the precise moment of the section. Hands down the best react on yt period. Been on a Rush ride for over 30 years since I was 14 years old teenager - that's 3/4 of my life now 😂. One of my personal favorites from that prime late 70s/early 80s era of Rush is the song Vital Signs from the same album Tom Sawyer is on Moving Pictures - you must check out Vital Signs!

I have just passed the 5-minute mark when thunder rolls and you put the caption up and then you comment on the beginning of this guitar solo that you like the sounds. I just wanted to tell you that those are known as volume swells on the guitar. I've watched maybe five of your actions now and you're comment before that you didn't know that much about guitar but you can still clearly get into Stevie Ray Vaughan. Alex lifeson of Rush is a fantastic guitarist. And what a volume swell is, is when you are playing in front of a live audience or of course in the studio but it's more fun in front of a live audience because it's a little riskier, but you use your pinky to turn down the volume knob of whatever pickup you've selected on your guitar. And that's a simplified version of it for sure depending upon what kind of architecture there is on the layout of your guitar in terms of the volume and tone controls and the various pickups and the combinations of them that are possible. It's actually quite the thing to figure that out for each instrument. But a volume swell is when you reach down with your pinky and Slide the volume all the way off and then you strike the next thing with intention as you immediately start bringing the volume up with your pinky on the volume knob and you can run it back and forth to get that kind of vibrato in there like he's doing? All that stuff. And you notice the volume gets louder and louder and then he keeps the volume up and rips into the first guitar solo, but there is one coming up that's even more mind-blowing.

I'd do Working Man - Live in Cleveland.next. And Neil Peart live drum solos. They were my first concert in 1981 (I was 14), and it was in Dallas. My friend's brother got us the tickets, and we got 2nd row, right in front of Alex Lifeson (guitarist) in '81. You should watch the live versions of Xanadu, Closer to the Heart (live in Rio), YYZ (live in Rio). The US Army sang "Time Stands Still" as a tribute to Neil after the died. His death hit me hard, and it still chokes me up.

One is only truly initiated into the Rush zone after one has ventured into Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left, and from there into the albums 2112, Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings. THEN you are in for the whole ride, and you may never escape!!

As a guy that grew up with Rush I can say, start with 2112 and listen to the albums in succession to see how they grew in every aspect of musicianship and recording experts. Then, be amazed that they could reproduce everything live exactly as recorded. One of they very few bands that could pull that off. And they did it consistently!!!!

Think of all the music you've been exposed to that came out after 1978 and try to imagine none of it existing and you being in 1978 hearing this for the first time. I was 13 years old and mesmerized. Not that there weren't a lot of incredible bands back then and prior, but this was way outside the realm of any thing I had heard to that point.

Neil Peart's favorite Drummer was Keith Moon. They called Keith Moon "The Loon". Neil took some of his stuff from Keith and also John Bohnam. Keith was the drummer for The Who. The Who did an album in 1971 called Who's Next. You gotta rate Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Reilly. You will lose your shit with those two!!!!!! Trust me!!!! As they composed this masterwork they realized they needed to record it in 3 sections as it proved too daunting even for these maestros to play the whole track in one continuous take in studio, they swore off songs of this length and complexity after this album yet managed to play it (damn near) flawlessly in concert on a few tours since

What you just heard was progressive rock at its best. Rush are among the elite when it comes to prog rock bands. You should listen to the album this song is off of, Its called hemispheres. You will be thinking it's impossible that only three people are in this band. In the meantime check out Xanadu from their 1981 concert in Montreal to see how three people can do this
