*(This poem is read at the ending long version of song): Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy is spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one; Lonely man cries for love and has none; New mother picks up and suckles her son; Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight, Red is grey is yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion
@IllumeEltanin2 жыл бұрын
Don't forget Morning Glory, the spoken word which opens the album after the backwards gong, hinting at the cyclical nature of a day repeating itself. Or, my personal interpretation, of a lifetime with the possibility of reincarnation: Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight, Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion. Pinprick holes in a colourless sky Let insipid figures of light pass by. The mighty light of ten thousand suns Challenges infinity, and is soon gone. Night-time: to some, a brief interlude, To others the fear of solitude. Brave Helios, wake up your steeds! Brings the warmth the countryside needs

Wow, one of my ten favourite bands ever. I thought you'd already reacted to this bewitching masterpiece. It's their most emblematic track and one of the most iconic songs of the sixties. I bought the single in 1968 and never got fed up. So mesmerizing (voices, melody, symphonic orchestration, ) It was an awesome success in France (N°1°) after two minor hits such as "Go now" and "Bye bye bird". The single version has no symphonic intro nor outro. Love the sound of the mellotron played by Mike Pinder. There are several reissues of the LP in 2006, 2008 and 2017 (50th anniversary with outtakes, bonus, alternative and live versions), a huge treat. The song inspired Léo Ferré a fantastic French composer, lyricist and singer who recorded an outstanding song called "C'est extra!" which is a kind of tribute to Nights in white satin.

I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's - 80's. They have had so many hit songs. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. The Moody Blues' most successful singles include "Go Now", "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock & Roll Band)", "Question", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" & "Your Wildest Dreams". But all of their music is great. Most of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to from start to finish. A lot of them go from one song into another without a complete break. Sadly we just lost Graeme Edge their drummer Nov 11/21.

Something you need to understand about the Moody Blues. They are one of the most talented bands ever to record. Between the different members, they can play 35 different instruments, which is why their studio versions have such a rich sound with all the various instruments, and why they need a full orchestra when they perform live.

Always great to see someone appreciating truly great music. They were a unique band, nothing like anybody else, and wrote very diverse songs. Mike Pinder played the mellotron and really helped define their sound. The 'strings' you hear are him playing on the mellotron. It was an early version of a synthesizer. You'd set it to strings or horns or flute, etc., and each key would play a tape loop that had the note from that setting. Most of the guys in the band wrote songs, which is one of the reasons they had such a wide variety of styles in their songs. You need to delve deeper into their early stuff! As a recommendation, and staying away from what most others will probably recommend, try 'Gypsy', 'You And Me', 'Lazy Day', 'Twilight Time', 'The Best Way To Travel', 'Lovely To See You'. So many great songs.

Like the music of Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP). The Moody Blues are always so fabulous - the whole album "Days of Future Past" must be listened to in full: it's set over one day, with "Nights in White Satin" being the end of the day... a musical masterpiece. Looking at the comments I see that a lot of the people who appreciated the so much must be in their 60s, as this magnificent album came out in the early 70's. I still have it on vinyl today. ❤ Another artist' music which is similar in its beauty, Procol Harum's single, "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
