Plant was in Morocco riding camels in the Sahara desert and singing in the market place with local musicians. Kashmir is a valley flanked by the Himalayas, but in Sanskrit the word means dedicated. The story goes that hundreds of years ago the lakes dried up. Plant and Page have rerecorded the song with an Egyptian orchestra.

Great review - I think "Kashmir" has more to do with the music than it does the lyrics - the Arabian-Indian groove of it. The lyrics are Robert Plant's experience in Morocco - where he has consistently spent time in the decades that followed after his initial inspiration there in the 1970's.

The meaning of perfection is Led Zeppelin, I have never seen such a perfect synchrony between voice and instrumental, in addition to the lyrics being extremely complex and philosophical and Kashmir translates all that.

John Bonham is hands down the greatest rock drummer. No one else comes close the feel he brought to the music of Led Zeppelin. The thing for me in this song is Bonham's kick drum. The kick drum is enormous , it's the entire low end of the song. Bonham is driving, propelling the song forward. Also note that the drums have a phaser effect, the whooshing sound you hear when Bonham is crashing the cymbals etc.

Always been my favourite Led Zep track. For me, the best live version has to be the one with the Egyptian orchestra from 94. In December 2014 I had the opportunity to attend a concert at one of Milwaukee's most prestigious theaters, the Riverside Theater, a 96 year old gem alongside the Milwaukee River. (( Milwaukee [Wisconsin's largest city ~ population 595,000] state of Wisconsin [on the western shore of Lake Michigan], USA )) The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (approximately a 100 piece orchestra) performed classic Led Zeppelin with the help of a blazing hot Zeppelin tribute band. The acoustics in this theater are excellent for music. There is Nothing like seeing one of your favorite bands with a full orchestra. The sound is rich and full and delicious to the ears. In 2018 we saw Justin Hayward with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra performing the music of the Moody Blues at the Marcus Center for the Performaning Arts. Ahhh, the music of the Moody Blues with a full orchestra ~ it was Heaven! I Highly recommend seeing and hearing a symphony orchestra at least once in your life. Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Dvořák, Bach, Hayden, all classical composers whose symphonies stand the test of time, some music composed well over 300 years ago! I'm sure your country of Georgia must have some exquisite old theaters. Go! You'll never regret it. Also, keep your eyes open for a tribute band called Brit Floyd, I do not know if they play in Europe, but I've seen them 2 or 3 times. They're really really good and put on a fantastic laser light show. This whole thing started because I wanted to say Kashmir is my very favorite Led Zeppelin song. In my defense it's 5:30 Sunday morning, didn't sleep at all yet, and I tend to ramble on (my next favorite Zeppelin tune, lol) Love your reactions. Still have to do Pink Floyd Animals but I have to set aside the time and do in proper order. Peace🌻Out

Recommendation is the live recording of "No Quarter" from Song Remains the Same. In my opinion this is the best recorded guitar solo from Jimmy Page. "No Quarter" is also a super moody, groovy song where Robert Plant evokes images of Vikings and such. The phrase, "showing no quarter" is an historic military term which basically means, show no mercy. Its dark/grave and totally takes you to another place out of time. Enjoy!

Hi guys....Evelyn from Patreon. And now for the live version: Knebworth or O2. Someone has already requested Knebworth from ‘79.......but I still say that you should watch the O2 version....it was SO tight, and it was so very cool to see them still in top form in 2007.....it was brilliant. And Bonzo’s son Jason channeled his dad’s spirit that night and made all his dad’s band mates proud......And yes, this is their favorite song because it reflects all the influences from North African (Moroccan, Malian) and Middle Eastern (Egyptian) scales that Jimmy and especially Robert fell in love with in their travels to those regions. This would be reflected even further when Page and Plant reunited in 1994/95 and again in 98 to tour. If you watch video from the No Quarter tour, they have an Egyptian orchestra who traveled with them. They reworked several of the Zeppelin songs to have a strong Middle Eastern sound...and Kashmir worked really well with that interpretation......You guys should definitely watch a video from that tour and see how it sounds. Wonderful. Robert has continued his deep love affair for The Atlas Mountains and the people who live there (The Gnawa tribe in the Maghreb desert) and their music. Often staying for a month at a time, he has journeyed there as often as he can over the past 50 years...even attending and performing at a music festival in the desert north of Timbuktu in the early 2000’s. His heart remains divided between the mountains and desert of Morocco/Mali and his childhood home in the Black Country of west England, so near the hills of his beloved Wales. Although English, he is a self-confessed Celt in his heart.

Nice reaction to a Led Zep classic, the song was originally called Driving to Kashmir and is about a trip toKashmir in India, this is why the string arrangement has a very Indian vibe ro it. I agree , the best version is the Page / Plant tour where they perform it with international musicians . I do not know if it is the one you are referring to , I apologize but I cannot upload the link. It gives the song a whole other dimension. If you have not seen that performance , do yourselves a favour.

Evelyn here: Now listen to Achilles Last Stand....studio cut. Regarding why it was called Kashmir: back then, during the “hippie” era, Kashmir was like a pilgrimage place. If you could afford it, and had the time and were adventurous enough, you tried to get there. This was before all the tragedies that have befallen Kashmir since the 70’s. Back then, it was idyllic and so beautiful....a peaceful Shangri La....almost mythical. So, Robert was writing the lyrics in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco....probably looking at the desert moon......and just put his feelings together with “I’ll Take you there”......to this beautiful, mystical place.......most of us knew at the time what he was trying to evoke using the name of Kashmir.....He will take us to a beautiful, mystical, heavenly place. Hope that helps to answer your question.

It's about a journey that they took to Kashmir. I can almost picture the scene of a caravan moving across the desert and they describe it so masterfully in music and lyric. They were highly influenced by Indian music and sound s. Watch Page & Plant Unleaded and you will see the influences there.

Hey guys! Love the reactions to Zeppelin. Definitely check out Ten Years Gone by them. I also strongly recommend reacting to Jimmy Page’s Ten Years Gone DEMO- which was written before the song was actually made. It has great acoustic guitar and something I think you’ll really enjoy- cheers! 🤘
