Broad Beans | How & When To Plant In Your Allotment Garden
Thank you for joining me today where I share with you how to plant Broad Beans in a No Dig raised garden bed.
Planting Broad Beans, an exciting part in the growing calendar,
whether it's late Autumn or early Winter you really get a sense of being ahead of the game. Enjoy this feeling because it won't last long.
For me, planting these Beans has come a little later than I had planned, from rain storms to frozen ground, I have all the excuses going!
Sown on October 19th last year, these Aquadulce are strong little soldiers and have stood tall on my patio table, quietly waiting for this day.
Honestly, the poor little things had a mass of roots coming out of every hole in the pot and I am surprised they didn't march themselves into the ground!

Hello Erica, I have been told that the beans take Nitrogen from the air and fix into the soil, but as Steve has said and I have been told its used up when they fruit, but I have always found some swollen roots so yes leave them in the ground to feed the next crop which should be the Brassicas family. ♻️Happy Gardening........Terry King.

Nice one Erica. You'll most likely find that the nitrogen nodules are used up as the beans fruit so there's not really a lot left in the soil after harvesting (think field beans as a green compost - no good if they pod up) I'm starting mine late this year as the overwintering ones last year didn't really do too well and they were taking up much needed real estate 🙂

Hi Erica. I've tried a few times starting broad beans in the autumn with not much success. They either grew too big and got blown about by strong winds or got damaged by hard frosts. I now start them in late winter or early spring in the greenhouse. These have been much more successful. We have a problem with jackdaws around here as they have learnt how to peck open the pods so I have to net them as well. Good luck with your beans.

Great video and you have been busy. I have been busy completing the preparation of my vegetable and fruit beds and I am looking forward to the new growing season. I won't be growing Broad Beans because I do like beans but I don't like Broad Beans that much compared to others and don't eat them that often so think it would be a waste of time and seeds.

Hi Erica, enjoyed the update. I also sowed Aquadulce last October and left them in my greenhouse overwinter. The winter has been so warm, they all grew to about 4 feet high, developed flowers and the flowers have now all dropped off! First crop of anything I have grown that was too successful for its own good. So will be doing a new sowing this week! All the best Martin.

Hi Erica, that was a great update. My broadbeans were only sown a few weeks ago in loo roll inners in a cold greenhouse. They are all up and growing away nicely. I will be planting them out before too long but will warm the soil just a little with some fleece. I am sure it is not necessary but as they have been indoors since sowing it thought it might be a good idea to cosset them just a little bit :-)

I've always planted straight in the ground in October, but this year I did have to replace half of them as mice (or some small animals) nibbled through most of them as they popped up. Never had that problem before, maybe hungrier mice this winter!

In previous years my broad been got battered by the winter weather. Last your I used canes to support the bean stems and they all survived the winter and did really well. This year I planted them near the end of November - so they are still quite small at the moment and don't need support yet. You should consider using cane supports?

I need some help, i planted boradbeans after looking your video, I did not use seed tray. I planted at a corner of my veggie garden and when plants were 5 cm tall i replanted maintaining advised gap. During replantation i used cow manuer for some nutrition. Now the plants are 15 cm tall, most of their leaves look dry and burnt. most of them have gained length but are not standing. What could be the reason of most of their leaves looking dry and burnt? I water them every alternative day. Shall i provide any support with sticks and string to stand them up?
@ericaslittlewelshgarden
@ericaslittlewelshgarden 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you should put some sticks to use as supports, that will really help. With the brown leaves, I'm not sure, did they get sunburnt? Or windburnt?
@earcandies9677
@earcandies9677 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericaslittlewelshgarden thanks for the reply. not sure if it is sunburnt or windburnt because the yellow mustards next to them are fine, yellow mustard has softer leaves and are more elegant. I read somewhare that cow manuer are stronger for some plants in their early stage, this may be the case. I am watering them twice a day now. lets see how they go.
