Last Friday, my friend Pavla Novotná and I were checking our favourite birding sites when an interesting thing suddenly caught our eye. Even though we were wearing winter jackets, a whole flock of various dragonflies were swarming on one section of the forest path. So we grabbed our gear and went to see what was flying around 🎥
The most numerous were the broad-bodied chasers - a relatively common species characterized by a pronounced sexual dimorphism. In layman's terms: the male looks different from the female. The males charm the world with their pale blue abdomens, while the females scare me a little every spring. Their yellowish backs always make me think a giant hornet is flying by 🐝
While Pavla was chatting with her favourite tree frogs, I was hunting dragonflies. The light was hellishly harsh and the wind was blowing hard, but even in these inclement conditions I managed at one point to capture a biologically quite compelling scene that I had never even seen before, let alone filmed - a male and female in one shot. Aesthetically, it is not very beautiful footage, but you can at least compare the two sexes of this species and rejoice in the gender balance of my work 🫠
