First week of June we got corn and beans in and some clover. I sprayed gly in May to terminate oats and weeds. Need a lot more ground work here in southern Ohio. Did some pellet lime and a little triple 19. So I’m back now and with only about a 1/4” of since planting the beans are getting eaten and are about 3”-5” and the corn is almost knee high. Clover however was not good at all so I just over seeded more….and we got rain. I’m still in a learning curve and it’s not a straight line. Thanks for sharing I’m always watching….when I have time. May I recommend a small equipment change..... I used to run the same bag spreader as you, but switched a couple years ago to the Solo 20lb spreader with a rotomolded hopper. HAVE MERCY it is so much nicer! no more bag folding over and pinching flow, no more having to hold your arm at a weird angle to keep the bag upright. Best $60 I ever spent for food plots.

We just disc up and planted some soybeans in our food plots. We have had no rain for 6 weeks, and none in the near future. We will use the beans as a green crop (if they grow) and plant our food plots into them in August. Bob

what did you spray with the four weeks before you tilled? just regular old roundup?

Cut the very top and bottom out of a 2 1/2 gal rinsed out chemical jug to fit inside the bag on your seed spreader. The jug is almost a perfect fit and holds the bag open to add seed without spilling.

So you tilled the seed "in" after broadcasting... Im glad i saw this. I was going to do that but i was afrraid the tiller would damage the seed itself.

Yes sir till it right in, won’t hurt a thing, also when using a disk instead of a tiller you can get the exact same thing, broadcast then disk the seed under! Thanks for watching.

I was skeptical about yet ANOTHER food plot channel (usually regurgitating the same info as everyone else) but you've quickly become one of my top channels on the subject.. you cover the basics AND get pretty advanced into some of the higher level topics. Wes, you commented at 15-20lbs/acre of straight corn, more precisely, a number of kernals. When broadcasting corn and beans on the same plot, how many pounds of each? Also, did you spread nitrogen for the corn?

Yes you have to account for around 175LBS of nitrogen anytime your looking at producing a corn crop. I shoot for 30,000-36,000 kernels per acre when broadcast

Jonathan thanks for watching! 15-20lBS per acre is a good start, however more precise way of doing is look at your bag of seed corn and it will say how many pounds that bag is….that amount is 80,000 kernels, that’s an industry standard. So i like to put around 30,000- 35,000 seeds per acre when broadcasting because I know some of them won’t come up. Seed corn varies a lot in size, I’ve had a bag weigh in the high 50’s lbs and I’ve had some that weighed as little as 40lbs….that’s why it’s most important to know your seed size when trying to figure out how much to put. I hope this makes sense, if it doesn’t feel free to let me know and I’ll try to explain it a different way.

@@DIYfoodplotpro it is terrible dry. I have two other tilled plots that are really struggling. That’s kinda why the no till with mulch. Holds in moisture vs. open tilled dirt. Good luck brother!

2 inches is the ideal depth, especially when planting early in the year where soil temperatures can vary significantly from day to day.1.5” is what I shoot for, but with small planters and hard ground it can be difficult to get the seed in the ground that deep with food plot planters. Get a plastic bucket and cut the bottom out of it and put it in your spreader. It will hold the sides up when you are filling it.

Just a tip don't broadcast corn it don't grow like it should or if you do try to work the seed into the ground about an inch in or at least covered by soil

@DIYFoodplotpro but I see what you're trying to do is spread that corn out so it ain't in rows and makes it easier to see in the corn. I hunt an acre plot and usually plant 12 rows with a 12 row planter right down the middle. I leave it standing for bow but come back in and knock it down about 2 or 3 weeks before gun season
